The enchanting Tamar Orchard Barn is a luxuriously appointed, self-catering studio for couples or singles set in the peaceful two acres grounds of the unique and elegant 17C Grade II listed Sandhill House, near the historic Stannary town of Tavistock. The Barn is the perfect gateway from which to explore both Cornwall and Devon.

Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Barn is perfect for romance or retreat, walking, cycling, golf, short breaks and exploring National Trust properties, such as Cotehele House and the Royal Horticultural Society's Rosemoor Gardens, or for work if you prefer to avoid the big hotel chains and come back to the relaxing atmosphere of the Barn and the stunning views of the Tamar Valley. Also, some of the most beautiful beaches in South Cornwall are just 30 minutes away by car, with the spectacular North Coast being about 40 minutes..

The Barn welcomes dogs and all the local hostelries welcome dogs and offer great lunch and evening meals and even better beers

French doors in the Barn overlook it's totally private, secluded rose garden and south facing terrace, as well as a mature apple orchard and the more formal and horticultural gardens of Sandhill House. Facilities include a sumptuous shower room with underfloor heating, and well-appointed kitchen area, king-size bed, free wifi, Freeview TV with integrated DVD.

Sandhill House is set in 2 glorious acres, with spectacular views over the Tamar Valley.

Gunnislake, on the border of Cornwall and Devon, is situated between the ancient stannary town of Tavistock in Devon, with its 900 year old Pannier market everyday, and historic Liskeard in Cornwall, with England's Ocean City, Plymouth being just 18 miles south. The property is within a dedicated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Cornwall and West Devon's Mining World Heritage Site, recording the region's industrial archaeology. Gunnislake Station is only a short walk up the carriage drive makes the Tamar Orchard Barn the ideal starting point for the world famous railway journey, the Tamar Valley line to Plymouth, passing over Calstock Viaduct. The historic Naval City of Plymouth hosts the National Marine Aquarium and Barbican and the Hoe. Bodmin Moor and Poldark country is just a short drive away.

The Barn's open plan living area is designed in a contemporary style but retains and echoes the character of the old apple store Barn. The oak effect floor is warm and welcoming and solid ash furniture includes a king size bed, with a cosy electric blanket during the Winter season. The kitchen has a natural limestone floor and a combination microwave with oven and grill, induction hob and fridge. All cutlery, crockery and utensils are provided. The bathroom, also has a natural limestone floor and underfloor heating, a 'walk in' shower tiled with a unique slate, solid oak washstand and carved, grey slate basin. Hand soap and shampoo/shower gel are included.

The garden furniture, on the south facing lime stone terrace allows you to fully relax and enjoy the scented flowers around the French windows. There is also a barbeque, charcoal and utensils, for those special evenings when you dine 'alfresco'.

You can also enjoy a relaxing stroll around Sandhill's horticultural 'treasure trove' gardens or just relax in the formal gardens.

All bedding is included along with bath towels. Please note that beach towels are not included but can be provided.

The nearest general store, which can provide all every day needs, and petrol station, is less than half a mile away.

A welcome gift including tea, ground coffee, /Cornish or West Country milk and a very special home-made, Cornish Cream tea are included. Gifts for special occasions can be arranged upon request, such as champagne, flowers and or chocolates, at cost.

Our highly rated breakfast can also be taken in the main house, by arrangement, for £8.50 per person, which offers luxury B&B accommodation.

A laundry service, including ironing, can be provided for an additional charge.

Free parking is a short step through the gardens, to the Barn. Although the Barn is listed as a non smoking property you are welcome to smoke outdoors in the gardens; ashtrays are provided in the porch. Due to our extensive ponds the Barn is not suitable for children.


Please note there is a 50% deposit at the time of booking and the remaining balance must be paid in full a minimum 60 days prior to your arrival. If arrival is within 60 days of booking the Barn then the full rental charge must be paid at the time of booking. A £50.00 Security Deposit will be fully refunded provided that the Barn is left clean and tidy as it is upon your arrival and there are no breakages. Electric power is supplied, with a £2.00 allowance per day April - September inclusive, included in your holiday rental. The daily included rate from October - March inclusive is £3.00 per day. Any additional power used, based on meter readings, can be paid before leaving or will be deducted from the Security Deposit.

Shorter holiday breaks of 3 days will always be considered between 1 October 2014 - 31 March.

Getting around

Gunnislake train station takes you straight to Plymouth on one of the most scenic railways in the South West. You can even get directly to Penzance if you catch the right train or head off to Exeter. There is an excellent bus service to Tavistock our local historic stannary town and also to Calstock our beautiful village on the Tamar River.

Interaction with guest

Once your holiday is booked we will contact you with directions to find the Barn which is set in our 2 acre gardens. We will show you to the Barn and give you the keys and explain everything you need to know including our little map of all our local pubs and restaurants, and if you are bringing your dog/s companion, we can tell you about local walks. We will be on hand throughout your stay in case you have any questions or need help with anything. Just send us a text or knock on the door!
