“Peace and Tranquility......”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2015

Our holiday in Casa a Corte was delightful. The villa is in a great location up in the mountains about 45 mins from Pisa airport. The villa has three floors and was beautifully clean and well presented with lovely clean comfortable beds and a kitchen that was equipped with everything we needed for the whole two weeks. The dishwasher and washing machine came in very useful. The two shower rooms were brilliant with plenty of hot water. There is a lovely sitting room with comfy sofas on the second floor with a drawer full of games and shelves with good reading. This room also has a TV (which we never turned on) and the wifi never failed us. Outside there is a large swimming pool, (which was kept in pristine condition by some very friendly local house staff), with plenty of sun beds. There is a very refreshing shower next to the pool too. I found a hammock in the pool house which you can attach between two olive trees which we all spent some time in! The only noise you will hear whilst at the villa is maybe the chat of some local farmers, or the odd owl hooting at night....it was peace and quiet all the time, which was so relaxing, the perfect place to unwind. It was great to have breakfast on the covered terrace, and if you didn't want to sit by the pool you could then catch the sun on the terrace that had outdoor sofas with cushions, before moving to a further terrace where you could sit and watch the sun go down while having a frosty cool one, or a glass of crisp dry white! Once the sun's set go back to the covered terrace and light up the bbq! We visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is an incredibly amazing building and well worth going to see. We also took the advice of the owner and went to Florence for the day by train. This took one and a half hours from Lucca and cost €15 each return. Extremely cheap and well worth it. We hired Segways to explore Florence which was great fun! Lucca is a must, it has so much history, lovely buildings and ancient paved streets and plazas. We hired bikes and cycled the walls of Lucca in the late afternoon, it was beautiful. The coast is about an hour away, which was well worth the drive as the sand and sea were very inviting, always having toilets, cafes and bars close by. We took advantage of the all suggested restaurants, which did not disappoint, my husband had the best steak of his life at Antica Locanda Di Sesto which was only 20 mins from the villa, you really won't find service like theirs anywhere else! Casa a Corte was a beautiful retreat.....even after two weeks we weren't ready for home....

Dear Val & John Many thanks for your kind words and delighted you all had such a nice time and managed to explore so much. We chose the location as Lucca has so much to offer and the transport system is so good, allowing you to visit so many different things. The restaurants are amazing, offering so many different Italian meals. Best wishes, Hugh

“Perfection!!”

Reviewed 30 Sep 2015

Wow! This place is incredible and is set in the most beautiful location. If you're looking for the perfect holiday, then Casa a Corte can provide that for you. If you just want a day to unwind at the villa itself, then you have a gorgeous pool to swim and cool down in after you have spent time relaxing on one of the three terraces, all of which attract the sun. Looking to feed yourself whilst you are there? Then look no further than the best stocked kitchen we've ever seen, and enjoy the BBQ whilst the sun is setting! On the days you want to leave the villa, just a short drive away is Lucca, which is one of the most beautiful places you could visit. I actually told my partner that it is somewhere I could see myself living one day! Further on, there is Florence. We enjoyed a day here walking around gardens and visiting coffee shops and incredible buildings and architecture - the Duomo is one of the most impressive buildings I've seen. If you fly to Italy, the nearest airport is Pisa. We took the opportunity to visit the Leaning Tower when we were there. How that hasn't fallen over yet beggars belief! For restaurants near to the villa, look no further than Antica Locanda Di Sesto. The experience you enjoy there will be second to none. From the great service of Lamberto and company, to the wines and beers, the appetisers and starters, you CAN NOT be disappointed. But the starring role of this restaurant goes to the Bistecca alla Fiorentina. A perfectly cooked piece of meat by the chef over his wonderful personally made olive wood fired grill, carved at the table by Lamberto, and eaten joyfully by myself! Words cannot describe the taste, it was simply the best I've ever eaten. All in all, we would describe Casa a Corte as the perfect location for everything you could need from a holiday - relaxation, tourist attractions, days at the beach, swimming in your private pool, amazing views - Casa a Corte is the one for you!

Dear Maughans, Thank you so much and delighted to read that you thoroughly enjoyed yourself and benefitted from the wonderful warm September days. It is so relaxing sitting amongst the olive trees by the swimming pool. I agree, Lucca is such a lovely city, voted 2nd best place to live in the world - 2015. Best wishes, Hugh

“Perfect mid term break”

Reviewed 30 Nov 2014

We, 2 families from The Netherlands, stayed in Casa a Corte during the kids (6 - 11) mid term break from school (3rd week in October) . We had a lovely week with beautiful weather (21 - 25 degrees), delicious food and great company. Hugh, the owner, was very cooperative upfront and during our stay. He recommended us some great restaurants (even with kids :-), beautiful sight seeing places (beach, Cinque Terra, cycling city walls of Lucca) and even helped us out by mobilizing the neighbours when a the combination of a thunderstorm and an old tree blocked our road the exit the premises. Highly recommendable and hope to return next year.

My husband, Matt, and I stayed at Casa a Corte for 5 weeks ... and they were one of the most memorable 5 weeks!! WOW … we cannot thank the owner and everyone associated with Casa a Corte, Gugliano, Porte a Moriano, etc etc … for all their kindness, heartfelt welcome, generosity and making our stay literally one of the best vacations we have had. We cannot thank the owner enough for all his communications for the past 1 ½ years, his assistance in everything & anything we needed or asked about!!!!! He is such an incredible host / home owner and a very dear person. ALL his recommendations were of the highest quality! We had friends and family stay with us at different times ... and the owner literally sent (mailed to their primary home in Germany & USA) everyone a book with detailed directions/photos from whichever airport they arrived in to Casa a Corte!! Incredible! Matt & I … our family & friends … LOVED the beautiful pool!! OMG we had so much fun! Enjoyed BBQing outside at least 4 nights per week & we had every meal outside under the stars :-)) We all absolutely loved & enjoyed a restaurant in the nearby town “Antica Locanda di Sesto” … so fabulous and delicious! The Barattini family is very kind & welcoming. Lamberto Barattini was the ultimate maître d' / head waiter!! He has such style / class, expertise and a huge heart :-)) We were all mesmerized by the fireflies sparkling all across the property … magical! Woken up every morning by all the beautiful birds singing :-) The cooks - Grazia and Anna Rita came to the house 3 times when we had a different group of friends/family staying with us. SO INCREDIBLE! They were also recommended by the owner! Wow delicious & such wonderful women!! I suggest every guest request them to cook at Casa a Corte for 1 or 2 nights … very special!! We took many long day trips throughout Tuscany … trips to Lucca … Opera Recital … many hikes … went to the ocean … etc etc etc … and had many many days relaxing & enjoying Casa a Corte!! “Perfect Tuscan Retreat”

Casa a Corte is a perfect Tuscan getaway with a great location to visit many classic Tuscan towns. The house is well-equipped, large and very private. The pool was a great bonus after a hot day of touring Italy. Property owner is very accommodating, responsive, and informative. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a private getaway to enjoy Tuscany.

Karyn, You are very kind and thank you so much for taking the trouble to review. I am glad you all had such a wonderful Italian experience and hope it last long in your family's memory. Best wishes, Hugh & Hazel

“A gem in Tuscany...”

Reviewed 14 Oct 2013

Spent a week here with 6 friends in September 2013. The property is absolutely stunning and the pictures posted accurately represent it. Hugh, the owner, was incredibly helpful - he responded promptly to all our emails, provided detailed directions in advance, gave great tips on local restaurants, markets, and sites to see, and checked in during our stay to ensure we had everything we needed. The location is beautiful - rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves for miles. The views are breathtaking. The location is great as it is very remote yet by car you are only an hour away (or less) from some great towns and sites. The kitchen is well equipped (we cooked most nights), beds were comfortable, and the entire property was very clean and in good repair. I would reccomend this property without hesitation. Thank you, Hugh, for making our stay so memorable.

David, Thank you so much for your kind and complimentary review, plus taking the trouble over your 'Thanksgiving' weekend to post it. We're delighted you all had such a good holiday in Tuscany and in Europe and hope it lasts long in the memory! We are very fortunate to have had such wonderful guests. Best wishes, Hugh & Hazel

We stayed at this lovely house for 2 weeks and lovely every moment. Less than an hour from Pisa, and easy to find. Thanks to the owners for following up with us after our stay, and making recommendations of where to go and what to do in the area. For us, a quiet, relaxing break away from the city - I couldn't imagine anywhere better and can't wait to return.

Nick, We were delighted you enjoyed your stay and please pass on our thanks to the Digby's for recommending Casa a Corte and hope to see you all in the near future. We're glad that all the recommendations were successful and it was a very relaxing and peaceful break after your hectic life in the Middle East. Best wishes, Hugh & Hazel

“A Tuscan Gem”

The owners of Casa a Corte were incredibly helpful - nothing was too much trouble. They gave us the most detailed directions to the property, which meant we arrived stress free & helped enormously with suggestions for days out. The house itself was brilliantly equipped, which always makes things so much easier! There was nothing we wanted that we didn't have.

Thank you for your kind words and delighted that you will be returning with your family in 2014. It is always good to hear our suggestions for days-out and restaurants have been so successful.

“"It really captures the essence of the 'good life""”

Reviewed 6 Dec 2011

We loved our stay at Casa a Corte. Located in the heart of such a beautiful Tuscan valley, it really captures the essence of the 'good life'. Surrounded by working olive groves and vineyards, you can witness the Italians going about their daily lives as they tend to their crops. A local shop in Ponte Moriano sells the local olive oil (extra virgin of course!) and wine (both produced on the farmhouse's doorstep!) so guests to A Corte can literally 'taste' their surroundings. Really quite magical. We often enjoyed a glass of the local red whilst soaking in the views from the picturesque main terrace. The perfect way to 'unwind' from a day by the pool! The vicinity to Lucca, the beach and the mountains also enabled us to get a very all-round experience of Tuscan life. We really enjoyed exploring beautiful Lucca and cycling around the walls and the beach and mountains offered us fantastic days-out! If you fancy travelling further afield, Florence is just over an hour by train and Pisa is even nearer - sadly we didn't do either! We were too content with the surrounding area to venture much further! One thing we particularly enjoyed was having supper cooked for us in the house. It worked out to be fantastic value and gave us the opportunity to really enjoy the beauty of the valley, whilst being served beautiful local food. Heaven or as the Italians would say 'paradiso'! Thanks to the owners for giving us a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the best of Italy & Michael for looking after us! We look forward to returning and will encourage friends and family to do the same. The Gatenbys 4 - 18th June 2011

As owners of the house it gives us so much pleasure to read positive reviews on A Corte & hear guests thoughts and new discoveries. Because the area is so beautiful & the locals work so hard to maintain the land, we love it when guests venture into the countryside and see the wonderful flowers, rare birds and animals. One of the most stunning sights I have ever seen was in the valley surrounding the property when tens of thousands of fire flies illuminate the hills. We always appreciate any ideas and suggestions. Many thanks H&H

“A Tuscan Dream”

Reviewed 5 Sep 2011

Review #4663154 "A Tuscan Dream" We've been on two family holidays now to A Corte and it's been absolutely magical on both occasions. The converted farm house offers up exactly the kind of rustic charm that you'd envisage: perched on the hillside with spectacular views across a lush, Tuscan valley. If anything, the photos don't do it justice - views are also visible from the pool and the veranda which backs onto the pool area. The pool is a good size - large enough to swim lengths and for the kids to play games Inside the house, the furnishings are warm and tastleful, the interior is spotlessly clean and the bedrooms are large and comfortable. Outside there's an abundance of comfy furniture and a covered veranda which is great for barbeques in the evening. There are also a total of 3 terraces around the house, all offering great views of the valley. In terms of surrounding attractions, the house is a short drive from Lucca - a fantastically quaint medeival Italian city seemingly untainted by the modernising corporate brush. Definitely take the cycling tour around the walls to get a feel for the place and peer down into the city for a view of the stunning architecture that's prevalent throughout. the also have terrfific open air concerts in the main amphitheatre which are a must. There are also several great restaurants nearby in the hills - check out Antica locanda steak reestaurant for the best steak in the region! Finally, if you need a hand with anything, Michael, an English local who lives nearby, and helps maintain the property, is very forthcoming with any ad hoc help or advice that you might require. All in all - FABULOUS!!

We love guests returning to A Corte with one family returning in 2012 for the 6th time. The Dickman's now know more about the local area than some of the locals. They have eaten in all the wonderful restaurants, especially our favourite in the world, Antica Locanda and walked the highest peaks. They are extremely energetic and have fallen in love with the Lucca area, Pietrasanta's cool art scene & skiing in nearby Abetone Many thanks for all your stories, H&H
