The ‘via Chiantigiana’

Is one of the most enjoyable motoring routes in Italy. It runs directly south from Florence to Siena through the middle of the Chianti Classico wine zone of Tuscany, one of the most instantly recognisable landscapes in the world. After passing Ugolino Golf Course, the oldest golf club in Italy, the Chiantigiana runs upward and follows the ridges between the Val d'Elsa and the Valdarno, wandering from one farmhouse and villa to another, from time to time passing through villages and small towns. These include Strada in Chianti, Greve in Chianti, Panzano in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti. The towns of Impruneta, Lamole, Volpaia and Radda in Chianti are just a short distance along side roads from the via Chiantigiana and can be visited by following the network of secondary roads that link them together. Other short diversions take the visitor through beautiful hillscapes to Montefioralle and Badia a Passignano to the west, and to Gaiole in Chianti and Badia a Coltibuono to the east. The area around Gaiole in Chianti is particularly rich in castles and chapels including the castles of Vertine, Meleto, Barbischio and Brolio. The castles area can be toured by turning off the Via Chiantigiana at Castellina and heading through Gaiole, exploring the back roads and then continuing on to Castelnuovo Berardenga.

Florence, considered the home of Renaissance and the Italian art, is one of the most important tourist place in the world thanks to its incredible beauty. The majority of sights can be easily reached on foot so visitors do not need a car. Florence has excellent bus service which is reliable and convenient.

Siena

It is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns, located in the heart of Tuscany. Built on three hills and surrounded by well preserved walls, Siena is filled with fine examples of Gothic architecture and has one of the world’s most unique piazzas ‘Piazza del Campo’. Arezzo

The city is located in a hilly area in eastern Tuscany, between the provinces of Florence and Siena. "Arretium" was one of the most important and wealthy cities during the Etruscan reign and even today preserves some of the original defensive stone walls built around the city and numerous archeological areas. Etruscans were and remain famous for their great ability in working with gold and thus is it no coincidence that Arezzo today is one of the major centers for jewelry and goldsmith craftsmanship in Italy.

Pisa

The city of Pisa rises above the banks of Arno, just before the mouth of the river at Marina of Pisa. It is one of the most important cities in Tuscany and it is extremely well-known in the world, because of its famous symbol: the leaning tower, known as Pisa Tower.

For mountain lovers

Abetone Mountain is 1388 m, only 1 and half hour drive from Florence. In winter for ski-lovers but there are plenty of activities during all other seasons as well. Abetone Gravity Park – a large park dedicated to mountain biking lovers. Fans of ‘Downhill’ and ‘Freeride’ will find here even five different trails of 6 km in length. Meanwhile, a ‘Cross Country’ trail with various levels stretches for about 30 km. It is the only park dedicated entirely to mountain biking in central Italy and, in addition, it is equipped with a super-fast lift system (it makes the height difference of 700 m in 7 minutes). Ponte Sospeso – a hanging bridge. In the Mammiano Basso area there is a bridge of 220 m in length, hanging 40 m above the Lima River. It is one of the longest hanging pedestrian bridges in Europe. Orto Botanico is the Botanical Garden in the Valle del Sestaione area, situated at a height of more than a kilometre. In the outskirts of Abetone there is also Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese – an eco-musuem, presenting exciting sightseeing tours (such as Ice Road, Iron Road, Way of Religious Art and etc.). In August there is the ‘Festival of Blueberries’ with an open market, where you can taste a variety of dishes with blueberries, the most common shrubs in the area.

You can reach by car the top of Monte Amiata (1738 m a.s.l.) with its green meadows brimming with colourful flowers, ancient forests of beech and chestnut, and its geysers. Along the way, you can't miss a stop in the medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, with its natural thermal pool dating back to 1500, in the center of the main square.

How to reach us from North

From Bologna or from the Florence airport, take the highway A1 in direction of Rome, exit at Firenze-Impruneta, then follow the guidelines for Impruneta. After the town's main square, continue straight on into the provincial road 'SP 69' (Via Pancole km 8 V-8 VI). Enter the big iron gate on your right (Chianti and Art, n° 141).

How to reach us from South

From Rome, take the highway A1 in direction of Florence, exit at Firenze Sud (Florence South) and after pay toll (50 m) turn on your right, following direction towards Greve - Siena and take the first turning on right sign-posted Grassina until you come to the centre of the village (approx 2 kms). Continue straight on along Route 222, the very attractive Chiantigiana highway passing through Ugolino Golf Course, until Martellina (just before reaching Strada in Chianti), and turn on your right signposted Impruneta onto the provincial road 'SP 69' (Via Pancole km 8 V- 8VI). Enter the big gate on your left (Chianti and Art, n° 141).

How to reach us by bus

It is also possible to reach us by SITA bus from Florence. The bus station is 100 yards to the left of the Railway Station (SMN). The trip takes 40 min, route via Grassina.

PARKING IN FLORENCE

We suggest to park in the parking lot located in Piazza Cesare Beccaria, within walking distance from major Florence attractions and outside the ZTL area. (1,70 euro per hour; Daily fee: 20 euro)

It’s rather easy to reach from Grassina. Follow the direction to Florence and at the end of Via Marco Polo, at the traffic light, turn on your left (you will have the Arno river on your left side). Always go straight ahead following Lungarno Aldo Moro, then Lungarno Cristoforo Colombo and finally Lungarno del Tempio. Turn on your right into Viale Giovanni Amendola … you will find the entrance of Parking Piazza Beccaria on your left.
