The Rutland region
For a relaxing break in the countryside, without the traffic or the queues, welcome to Rutland, England's smallest county! Imagine miles of uninterrupted views across open countryside, footpaths following historic and well known trails including the Viking Way and Macmillan Way or enjoy meandering through country lanes, listening to bird song, with chocolate box villages dotted along the way. Why not take off by bike, and explore the county on two wheels, perhaps stopping off at one of the Rutland's many traditional Inns for light refreshments along the way.
First recognised as a Shire County in 12th Century, Rutland has a rich history and a proud and friendly people. Rutland has always depended on the land for a living, and today it remains a predominantly agricultural county as can be seen by the rolling hills and flower filled meadows.
A major change to Rutland's landscape came in the 1970's, with the creation of Rutland Water. The tiny hamlets of Nether Hambleton and Middle Hambleton in the Gwash Valley were flooded to make way for the reservoir; when the villages were lost, so too were peoples homes, farms and way of life; their story lives on though, through the historical displays and fascinating information available at the Normanton Church Museum.
Rutland's central location and easy access make it an ideal place to stay during a trip to the East Midlands, with a range of fascinating attractions close at hand. Mill Cottage at Greetham Valley in Rutland is set amidst the stately homes and castles of Hidden England - Burghley House, home to the internationally famous annual Horse Trials held every September, and the castles of Rockingham, Belvoir and Grimsthorpe are all an easy drive away. Families will enjoy visiting Twinlakes Park at Melton Mowbray, Sacrewell farm, Conkers in the heart of the National Forest and the National Space Centre in Leicester – all great days out.
Nearby Rutland Water has an internationally respected reputation for sailing, trout fishing and bird watching and numerous competitions and events for these sports take place at the reservoir throughout the year. The reservoir also caters expertly for visitors, and beginners or novices are welcome to try any number of exhilarating activities during a stay in Rutland. From fly fishing, to sailing, from kayaking to windsurfing, with professional instruction. In addition, the reservoir's 25-mile shoreline features a civilised circular track around which a pleasant day can be spent walking or cycling. Rutland Water is the venue of the largest Bird Fair in the world with well over 20,000 visitors every August - a bird watchers' paradise and just a few minutes drive from Mill Cottage.
Barmsdale Gardens, Easton Walled Gardens and Gates' Nurseries are just three of the nearby treats in store for garden lovers. Enjoy walking? There are numerous beautiful walks crisscrossing Rutland and the free Greetham Valley minibus is available to take groups of guests on walking breaks to walk sections of 'The Rutland Round' .
