Location description from owner

The England region

The county of Cumbria includes the Lake District (a National Park), it’s mountains are a popular holiday destination, and offers a wide range of outdoor activities. It is famous not only for its lakes and its mountains (locally called fells) but also for its associations with poets, writers and painters (Wordswoth, Beatrix Potter, etc) All the land higher than three thousand feet above sea level, in England, lies within the Lake District including Scawfell Pike, the highest mountain in England. The Lake District also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, (as well as the Biggest Liar). The Lake District has a long industrial history and there are many examples of mining still to be explored. The Pennines which are to the east of Cumbria, has the highest point outside the Lake District, Cross Fell, and this is visible from Wetheral Cottages. Carlisle and the Borders of Southern Scotland and England are within easy reach and of course through this area runs Hadrian’s Wall (a World Heritage site). The western Yorkshire Dales are also accessible. Wetheral Cottages lies at the heart of Cumbria and is an ideal base from which to explore the region.

Great Salkeld

Great Salkeld has a population of some 400 people and is centered round the old Primary School. Pub and Norman Church. The church tower houses a clock whose chimes can be heard in the distance. The village's long history is found not only in the church but also by the remains of a middle age castle and records of several droving routes. The pub, The Highland Drove, which is renowned for its food, was once the stopping place for the drovers, who's animals were watered at the Dub just outside the village and now home to rare Great Crested Newts. The cottages are a mere 100yds from the church and pub.Penrith an attractive market town is the hub of the Eden Valley. It is an important shopping centre with an excellent mix of traditional, specialist shops and sophisticated arcades, where such items as famed Penrith toffee and fudge, the best of traditional Cumberland sausage and intriguing work of local artists and crafts people - are to be found. These together with the town's traditional Tuesday market provide something to keep the most avid shopper happy. With its central location, wide selection of places to eat and in which to stay, Penrith makes the perfect base for exploring the Lakes, Eden Valley and North Pennines.
