Location description from owner

The England region

The Peak District is an area of great natural beauty with rugged, peat-covered moorlands and magnificent limestone dales (great for walking and cycling, as well as other, more dangerous sports), plus picturesque villages and some interesting towns. It is the location of Britain's first National Park - the Peak District National Park, which is the the world's second most visited National Park.

The Peak District has numerous interesting and exciting tourist attractions Probably the chief among these is Chatsworth House - a magnificent house set in a landscaped park which is the home of the Dukes of Devonshire - major landowners in the area. This is followed by Haddon Hall outside Bakewell - the home of the Manners family, who are the Dukes of Rutland - is a beautifully preserved medieval manor house.

The Peak District is a fine place for outdoor activities such as walking and cycling, and each week and especially at weekends, many thousands of people come here to enjoy these activities.

There are numerous interesting towns to explore. Buxton is the one with the longest history, having been founded by the Romans, who exploited the warm spring water to build thermal baths, for which the town became very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result it has some magnificent buildings, notably the Georgian Crescent and the Opera House. It now has a thriving music and arts festival each summer.

Bakewell was founded in Saxon Times and is the home of the Peak District National Park Authority and is a busy market town notable for its livestock market.

“Great house, perfect spot for big groups”

Reviewed 18 Nov 2015

There were 22 of us for a family get together to celebrate what would have been our Mum and Granny's 92 birthday. We wanted space, good facilities for outdoor pursuits, easy to get to and a beautiful position. Cliff House fulfilled all the criteria-beautiful scenery, great walking, golf close by, Chatsworth on the doorstep. The house is spacious, warm and well equipped and we could all sit around the table (bit tight but no one cared). The bedrooms are very comfortable, plenty of hot water, well equipped kitchen and seating to sprawl on. The Mensal Hotel and pub are 3/4 minutes walk. The weather wasn't great, we had storm Abigail but that didn't spoil the enjoyment.

“Great working and social time at the Cliff House in the Peak District”

Reviewed 19 May 2015

We stayed at the Cliff House in May for a group retreat mixing work and social activities. Everything went well and everyone in the group really appreciated the place (lovely and functional house, amazing view). The landlord was very friendly and helpful during our stay. The information that was given to us about walking trips around the house and the activities available was also very helpful. In particular, we went to Go Karting and horse-riding (Tissington Trekking Centre). We also liked the caterers (Strand Fine Catering), recommended by Peak Venues. They were very friendly, punctual, organised, and the food was very good.

“A fantastic venue for a weekend celebration”

Reviewed 13 May 2015

Cliff House was the setting for a big 60th birthday celebration. I invited friends and family from all over the country and they were bowled over by the house and setting. The bedrooms are so comfortable and the downstairs provides wonderful, ample space to socialise. It is decorated so tastefully and feels homely as well as grand. And then there is the outdoors – such a stunning view and such great options around walking and cycling. The Peak Venues team were great. I would wholeheartedly recommend Cliff House to anyone looking for a large venue to run any sort of extended gathering.

“A wonderful place to stay for all types of people.”

Reviewed 20 Apr 2015

Loved the house and location. The Name outside needs to be larger as easy to miss. We celebrated our 50th Wedding Aniversary with all our family and a few friends. It was perfect. We were welcomed and shown around. The rooms were beautiful. There were so many lovely walks, suitable for all of us. I cannot praise this place enough.

“Brilliant venue - couldn't ask for more”

Reviewed 25 Mar 2015

I used this venue to run a weekend retreat, and I couldn't have asked for more. There were 19 adults, most of whom hadn't met before, and the ample space at Cliff House meant the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. Justin and his team were brilliant, and I felt I could get in touch with any problems while we were there. But everything went smoothly, and we had an incredibly relaxing weekend. The views and surroundings are stunning - every window has a view. And there's a brilliant cycle track at the bottom of the hill, and a couple of family/pet friendly pubs within 5 minutes' walk. We used a catering company that Peak Venues recommended, which was definitely worth it.

“Excellent home for an extended gathering”

Reviewed 9 Mar 2015

We wanted a venue to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday that was large enough to accommodate 30+ people including children. We wanted it in the English countryside but not so remote that you couldn't get to it, plus we wanted some pubs nearby so that we had somewhere to go should we choose to. We found Cliff House and could not have been happier. I had previously booked with Peak Venues (the owners) for another venue a few years ago (The Crewe and Harpur in Longnor) so I knew that they offered decent accommodation at excellent value. They didn't disappoint. The house was huge with 10 bedrooms plus a further three in the adjacent cottage. The owners were also willing for us to use the TV room as an additional bedroom for one of the children so all in all we had 14 bedrooms set up for the weekend. The property had a huge kitchen and separate dining room, plus a large living room. We were there for a long weekend and found the kitchen had all the right equipment (and space) to prepare a cooked breakfast for everyone (once you've got your head around the induction hob it's a doddle!) and there was enough space for everyone to sit (we had 34 people in total). On Saturday night, we were able to set up the dining room into a 'wedding' style layout with a top table and three perpendicular tables whilst we had a pre-dinner drink in the living room. We used the same caterers we used before for dinner (Brooke Bottom catering - couldn't recommend highly enough) and had the perfect evening. I was impressed with the professionalism and communication with Peak Venues. They never took long to come back to any of my emails and were really accommodating with all of my requests. They ask that you respect their noise policy, but you really have nothing to worry about - with the doors closed the noise really doesn't carry. The location of the house was excellent. It's right on the main road which made for easy access, even in January when there had been extensive snow. There is a pub directly opposite the house as well as several others within walking distance. The views across the Monsal trail are out of this world and you really must take a walk along the viaduct and through the old railway tunnel. It's also close to Chatsworth House which is such a beautiful area with some lovely walks. Because of the weather, we had some problems with WiFi during our stay and some of our guests also complained about the noisy boiler. We raised both of these issues with the owners and they tell me the boiler has now been fixed so this shouldn't be an issue for any future stays. The WiFi outage was because of the weather but it was really no big deal and the owners have offered to compensate us for the inconvenience. The house is also in different stages of modernisation so parts of the house, including the living areas, kitchen, shared bathroom and master bedroom, had all been recently decorated and look and feel very modern; whilst other parts of the house are a bit older. Not to the point that they are not clean and usable but there is a difference in quality if that sort of thing bothers you. I'm sure the owners are aware of this and are likely to decorate these parts of the house in the near future. Other points I would suggest for the owners: spare light bulbs - they are usually useful for when a bulb does go; and the property would also benefit from a boot room - perhaps part of the kitchen could have a bench put in or something like that? All in all, none of this should detract from you booking Cliff House. It's perfect for a weekend away in the countryside with a large group of friends and/or family.

“A fantastic house in a beautiful location.”

Cliff House was the perfect place for my sister's hen do. There was so much space for everyone and the facilities were great. The company were easy to deal with and provided us with all the information we required quickly. I highly recommend the property and would use Peak Venues in the future.

“Excellent - was better than expected”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2015

We arrived at Cliff House and was blown away with how lovely it was - the views were amazing and made even better by the snow. The house suited all our needs, with ages 3 - 50 everyone was catered for and enjoyed every minute. We enjoyed it that much we didn't want to leave. The Stables Bar just 2 minute walk was lovely and the owner "Keith" was very accommodating and we all ate there one night, food was lovely. It is our first break away over new year and we will definitely be booking with Peak Venues again and coming back to Cliff House. When we first made the initial enquiry all the way through they have been fantastic.

“Ideal place for large family gathering”

Reviewed 5 Nov 2014

Cliff House provided an ideal venue with comfortable bedrooms, modern en suite bathrooms, a lovely large kitchen and a dining room that would take all 29 of us. It is in a fantastic position with great views into Monsal Dale albeit a slightly busy road running past front gate.

“Absolutely fantastic!!”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2014

We spent a fabulous family weekend at Cliff House to celebrate a 60th birthday. We rented both the house and cottage to accommodate 34 of us - 27 adults and 7 children. Everyone we dealt with at Peak Venues was incredibly helpful, answered our queries very promptly and nothing was too much trouble. The venue itself is fabulous and suited our party perfectly - clean, comfortable and warm with a very large kitchen, equipped with everything we needed. Stunning views from the windows across the countryside and access to the Monsal Trail is literally a stone's throw away. Absolutely fantastic!
