Description from owner

Description

Benshaw Cottage has good quality kitchen and bathroom facilities as well as good carpets, decor, fine bedwear and furniture. It is a cosy and inviting self-catering holiday cottage in Tobson on Great Bernera on the west of the Isle of Lewis.

Whether you are an avid photographer, aurora watcher, trout and salmon fisherman, a sea angler or walker or are just a nature lover, Benshaw Cottage is ideal as a base. Lochs and rivers in the Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides, are known for their fishing and the clear, unpolluted air and skies make it very special.

This cottage is for those seeking a very relaxing break. Our reviews show how former guests tell us they loved the fact there is no wi-fi so they could have a proper holiday without constantly checking emails, etc. Wi-fi is available at the local community centre.

Mobile phone reception is good on most networks just a few yards up the road but is erratic in the cottage itself. We want you to be able to

Note: If you are planning a special occasion like a proposal, a birthday surprise, a honeymoon or other special event, just let us know. We can provide a limo or standard car with driver, a professional photographer, a delivery of flowers, etc. Just ask. If we cannot provide it ourselves, we undoubtedly know someone reliable who can.

Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Tobson is on the island of Great Bernera, which is connected by a road bridge to the Isle of Lewis. It has a lively community atmosphere much of it centred on the Bernera Community Centre which has a cafe, a museum and a games hall. Half a mile away from the centre is the Bernera Shop which has fuel pumps.

Great Bernera

When on Great Bernera you should visit the now-uninhabited village of Bosta where there is a superb clean and safe beach and an Iron Age house that has been recovered and rebuilt from the sands. Then you can go further afield and your day trip could take in the world-famous 5,000-year-old Callanish Stones, often referred to as Scotland's answer to Stonehenge, the Arnol Blackhouse which shows the basic standard of island housing even 60 years ago as well as the Norse Mill at Shawbost and the golden unspoilt beaches at Reef in Uig or at Luskentyre on Harris.

“Benshaw Bliss”

Reviewed 16 Apr 2017

Owners make every effort to ensure guests have a comfortable stay in a spotless cottage. Books, guides and maps in the cottage provide valuable insight about local history and fascinating places of interest. Benshaw is ideally sited for car trips to major Lewis tourist attractions, but is also quiet and tranquil - ideal for walking, photography and spotting wildlife including birds of prey. The memorable walk over the hill to Bosta Beach was the highlight of my short stay, and I'll go back to Benshaw in the future for boat trips and visits to Uig and Harris.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your very kind words. It was great to have you stay and we look forward to the next time.

“Comfortable holiday let in a superb setting.”

See above comment. The house was well- laced for the sort of quiet holiday we wanted. I would encourage others to book the property . Meeting the owners was useful too

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your comments. We are pleased you enjoyed your break at Benshaw.

“Lovely peaceful cottage with everything you need.”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2016

Lovely little cottage, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The hosts were friendly and obliging and when I enquired if there was an omelette pan before we came, they got one specially for me. The location was quite isolated with no walk-able amenities, and the petrol pump on Bernera was out of order, so would advise shopping for everything you need and filling up with petrol in Stornoway before arrival. Landscape around the area was rugged and beautiful and there were two amazing walks from the cottage, one to Bosta beach and one to Valasay, with stunning views from the hills. We thought a week would be plenty of time, but we could have spend a week just walking around on Bernera, never mind the rest of the Lewis and Harris! Already dreaming of our next visit...

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your kind comments and we are really glad you enjoyed the cottage. We would certainly agree with all your advice to make the most of a stay on Great Bernera.

“Cosy, comfortable cottage”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2015

This is a lovely little cottage - it can accommodate couples or a family of up to 4 people comfortably. It has a nice view across the bay, is modern and warm and has all the facilities you need. We really enjoyed our stay.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for those comments. We are very glad you enjoyed your break.

“Wonderful cottage with 5 star facilities in a beautiful and peaceful setting.”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2014

When we left Benshaw Cottage after a superb 4 night break, we felt we were leaving paradise! Words seem inadequate to describe the tranquility and comfort of the cottage. Starting with the kitchen - it has every bit of equipment you would need and we cooked 3 out of the 4 nights. Having 2 fridges in the house is a real bonus! The lounge, bedrooms and bathroom were immaculate and the whole ambience of Benshaw was very tasteful. I enjoyed not having the intrusion of the internet and really felt I could concentrate on relaxing! I could get mobile phone (O2) reception by walking slightly up the hill. Benshaw Cottage has every comfort and amenity to make for a vacation in a rural and quiet part of Lewis. Bosta Beach nearby and the Uig beaches were magnificent and well worth a visit! We toured around the lovely island and enjoyed returning to the cosy Benshaw after the delights of the Lewis landscape.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much, ladies. It was a pleasure to have you stay.
