Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

The very pretty, medieval town of Brantome it is a delight to walk around. See Charlemagne Abbey with its soaring campanile - one of the most elegant Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, with caves which where used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. Brantome town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience with boat trips and canoes available. A multitude of restaurants complete the experience or try a picnic on the banks of the river, there are car parks and WC's available.

10 km down river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles which is being restored and where you will find two chateaux built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th century) with a remarkable collection of furniture.

Aubeterre sur Dronne with its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre - classified as one of France's prettiest villages. The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterre is the underground church of St John. There is also a regular Sunday grenier sale with local traders and growers offering their produce. There is a beautiful pedestrian square in the centre surrounded by restaurants and stalls selling all kinds of food. It's a relaxing pleasure to be able to sit outside and enjoy your lunch and watch the world go by.

Not very far away is the town of Grottes de Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods, a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2. It contains some superb Aubasson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.

Other nearby towns worth a visit are Bergerac with its beautiful old town complete with its statue of Cyrano de Bergerac. Visit Les Eyzies for the caves at one end and the canoe hire at the other but aim to get there by lunchtime and then go on to see Sarlat in the afternoon. For a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside try Belves, a hilltop village with a typical square surrounded by small shops and restaurants as most villages have in this region.

Chateau Hautefort - incredibly impressive building with gardens and parkland. It's on top of a hill so good views too.

Saint-Jean-de-Cole - billed as one of France's prettiest villages and very photogenic.

Manoir d'Eyrignac - one of the best gardens we've been too.

Auvezere Valley - Good for an afternoon drive. It has stunning scenery and beautiful villages.

Le Double and Le Landais - quiet and worth exploring. It's forest and countryside with ponds all over the place. Ideal for picnics.

Rocamadour - visit the just recently discovered ancient cave drawings reported to have been done by children.

You can take the train from the nearby St. Astier station to Bordeaux for the day - 20 euros return or drive to the bay of Arcachon and climb the Grand Pilat (largest sand dune in Europe) in the morning and spend the afternoon in Bordeaux on the return journey.

Gravelle

Perigueux is a beautiful town and the proud owner of the largest cathedral in south western France. The Romanesque Cathedrale St-Front.

Around the cathedral you will find a number of narrow, winding, cobbled lanes. Follow them down to the pedestrianised Rue Limogeanne and you will discover where the locals have been doing most of their shopping since the Middle Ages. You will find butchers, bakers, chocolate makers and if you don't feel like eating out or cooking when you get back there are plenty of delicatessens to choose something from.

It is still a major market town and on Wednesdays and Saturdays people come from all over the region to display their goods and browse for the latest bargains. The local specialties are truffles, foie gras and pies. There is even an English Pub called the Star Inn! If you walk downhill towards the river you can walk along it's banks for miles.

On the other side of town it is much more modern with a large, square - distinguishable by it lamp posts with huge lampshades - that often hosts sport and musical events. There is a cinema complex and three good restaurants in the square. Behind the square is a department store called Monoprix - you can buy food, clothes and household goods here as an alternative to the supermarkets.

“Lovely villa in a lovely location”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2012

Communication from the owner was excellent and she provided very useful information before arrival and at the villa. The whole process has been dealt with in a very professional manner. The villa is not overlooked and so very private. It is very clean, has nice good quality decor and caters for all your needs - a lot of thought has gone into it. It is in a quiet road but close to amenities. The pool and garden were lovely and we were blessed with mostly sunny days to enjoy the facilities. We ate out a couple of times but enjoyed the use of the BBQ and supermarket prices for the wine!
