Due to the layout of the building which is built into a hillside, you enter on the third floor and ascend two floors to the apartment on the fifth.

Further details outdoors

The apartment block entrance is through a security coded gate. There are small communal gardens in the centre of the block which are attractive and well maintained. A good supermarket is 50m away, and there are cafes, restaurants and bars in abundance nearby.

As the apartment is set to the back of the block it is very quiet, even at busy times. The one exception is when the Tattoo is on for 3 weeks of the year. Then you will hear the Tattoo and can enjoy the end of Tattoo fireworks at 10.30 every week night and midnight on Saturdays.

Parking can be obtained at nearby public car parks. Public transport links are close by and very good.

Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the world; nicknamed "Athens of the North" . Edinburgh is unique in that it has two complete mountains in its centre and beautiful gardens in the main street, plus it has the sea to the North and the Pentland Hills on the South so the views are spectacular all around. There is much to see and do, from shopping to walking hills so remote that you can believe you are in the Highlands.

Within Edinburgh there are historical "closes" and even an underground street, as well as museums, galleries, parks, theatres, cinemas and a multitude of places to dine from a porridge and buffalo burgers in the Farmers Market to cuisine from almost every nationality in the world. Edinburgh Castle is a must for every tourist and the apartment will remind you every day that you are just under the Castle.

The apartment is in the The Grassmarket which is an area steeped in history and has long been a place of entertainment from medieval times (entertainment was of the gruesome variety) to the present day. The Royal Mile starts at Edinburgh Castle and leads down to the Royal Palace of Holyrood and the stunning new Scottish Parliament building. A large peaceful park, the Meadows, is only a few minutes walk away.

There is a large 24 hour, well lit multi-storey car park only 150m away at King Stable's Road.

Grassmarket

The apartment is in Edinburgh's historic Grassmarket. This large open square was the scene of public hangings, the Porteous Riots and the haunt of the notorious body snatchers, Burke and Hare. There is a wonderful selection of boutique shops, pubs and restaurants on your doorstep and it is only a three-minute walk to the Edinburgh Royal Mile. During the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe this lively area overflows with street performers, musicians and special events.

Less than ten minutes walk away are three cinemas including the Cameo and the Filmhouse plus three theatres, the Traverse Theatre, the Royal Lyceum Theatre and the King's Theatre. The apartment is beside the Edinburgh College of Art and is convenient for many parts of Edinburgh University. Many public buses are within a 5 minute walk for access to the rest of the city.

The Royal Mile is only a few minutes away for exploring all the haunts from Edinburgh Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyrood at the bottom.

“Thoroughly recommended.”

Reviewed 2 Dec 2015

Excellent central location; a clean, warm and comfortable apartment with all the facilities required to make an effortless stay. Very welcoming and attentive host.

“Close to everything”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2013

We could see the castle right outside the balcony, we walked to everything all weekend. Was close to a market and to the pubs in the Grassmarket area. The only downside was carrying up suitcases two flights of steps so not for elderly or physically limited travelers, Very comfortable bed.

“Central location & excellent apartment”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2013

It is so central to all the sights and was a great base from which to explore Edinburgh. Very impressed with the decor of the apartment and also too with the facilities - it was so well kitted out and the kitchen had everything we needed. Owner very nice to deal with.

“Wonderful comfortable clean Gem”

Reviewed 30 May 2013

I can only repeat more of the prior accolades other travelers have posted. Lynne took care of us from the moment I e-mailed her. She offered solutions to logistics that were beyond any expectations I could possibly ask a person to offer. She really cares about her renters. The apartment was fantastic. So well designed there was everything that we needed for our 5 day stay. There is a little grocery store a half block away with fresh everything. Part of the joy staying here was cooking. Something I don't have time to do in my " regular life" EZ walk to all the cities attractions. Met and exceeded my expectations. I know I mentioned the comfortable bed ... a delight considering how a good nights sleep makes or breaks the next day. Thank you again Lynne. We'll be back.

“Comfy, well-equipped apartment in fabulous location”

Reviewed 1 Nov 2012

We stayed in Edinburgh for 14 days, 10 of these were in this apartment. The apartment was very clean and had great amenities - cookware, laundry machine, hair dryer, comfortable bed, TV etc. Lynne was really great and made booking very easy. The location is fantastic - a quick walk to a strip of pubs (which were all pretty great, our favourites were the Beehive Inn and Black Bull). It's also a short walk away from the Royal Mile, which is a lot busier place to stay (stayed there our first 4 days). There were quite a few stairs to go up to get to the apartment, my partner and I are very active though so we didn't mind at all - just wouldn't want to bring someone who has difficulty getting around here. Only downfall was the shower - it was tiny! I'm very petite and I was super cramped. My boyfriend had a hell of a time with it. That was the only downfall though.
