Further details indoors

Mike & Emma bought this huge cortijo Farmhouse in 2002 and spent the next two years lovingly restoring it to its full grandeur and adding the modern airy barn conversion - The Casita. In 2004 we welcomed our first summer guests and were bowled over by the response. Ten years on we have made many improvements to the luxury of Finca El Almendrillo.
. The 150 year old Farmhouse consists of:
- seven picturesque pine-beamed bedrooms.
- most can be adapted to twin or double use.
- sofa-beds in two living and walk-through rooms provide extra sleeping space.
- Gran Sala (11 by 7.5 metres) is a cool and ambient woodlined refuge to meet and chat/watch a DVD/use WiFi during the mid-day heat.

The Casita is a sensitive architect-designed barn conversion offering some independence from the rest of the group with
• -three more bedrooms
• -second indoor kitchen
• Altogether the Finca boasts ample space for 20 or even more (contact owner).

Further details outdoors

Finca el Almendrillo is an acre and a half (6000 square metres) of rural haven in total privacy surrounded by the whirr of crickets in the picturesque olive groves.
-To the south the famous view of goat pasture and oak forest stretching to the hills of the Sierra de Loja and to the east the majestic Sierra Nevada.
-Traditional central courtyard provides a focus for daily life with its own outdoor kitchen featuring huge barbecue and catering grade cooker (catering arranged on request).
-Two enclosed private gardens.
-Numerous balconies, terraces and shaded spots.
-Massive 17 metre / 55 foot pool (deep and shallow end, roman steps for toddler paddling) adjacent to generous terrace and pergola.
-Pool is gated, fenced and a distance from house to ensure child safety.

The Andalucia region

Finca El Almendrillo occupies an almost unique position happily placed equally distant from the Andalucian big three ancient sities (Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla) and the Coast at Malaga (Costa del Sol) and Motril and La Herradura (Costa Tropical). All of these are easily within 90 minutes drive from El Almendrillo, save for Sevilla which will take a little more than 2 hours on the direct A92 motorway.

Within this area Granada Province and it’s neighbours offer an untold wealth of popular destinations (including the magnificent Ronda) and unknown corners of the real Spain, quiet and virtually unseen by tourists in decades – for example upland parts of the romantic Alpujarras.

Throughout the region weather is guaranteed sunny and hot during the summer months.

Granada

Many holiday-makers at El Almendrillo never leave the Finca ! But if after a few days’ poolside relaxation (and an idyllic, safe environment for young and old) you feel the need to get out and about , 10 minutes drive from El Almendrillo there is the village of Fuente del Conde with supermarket and Los Pajaritos bar and restaurant. En route you will pass through beautiful countryside seeing (with luck) baby goats, sheep, hoopoes and peacocks.

Further afield we can help you organise horse-riding for novices or fully-experienced (or both together), tennis or point you in the right direction for unforgettable views on a day’s walk or mountain-bike trip to the spectacular limestone crags of Torcal and the amazing Wolf Park.

Within 15 minutes drive there are four restaurants which we are happy to recommend giving a variety of local cuisine – traditional and modern. In the nearby white town of Iznajar there are bars, restaurants and a 9th century Moorish citadel to explore. Further afield (30 mins drive) the towns of Loja and Archidona offer real Spain, shopping and a pleasant, relaxed café society.

All guests receive an email giving useful information about their future holiday and on arrival at Finca El Almendrillo you will find an up-to-date file giving suggestions of outings (water-parks, zoo) near and far. We are happy to respond to queries and questions from the moment you click on us to the last day of your holiday !

“Paradise!”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2016

This place is truly magical. We stayed for a week with four families. Ten children aged 5 to 15 and 8 adults. The farmhouse was absolutely perfect for a large group. We drove through the night from MAdrid (Mikes directions were spot on) and arrived at dawn through the village and up into the hills. The property, the location and the views are simply breathtaking. The rooms were beautifully furnished and the two kitchens were very well equipped and set round the most beautiful courtyard. The pool is stunning and what is absolutely fantastic is its many and varied outdoor seating areas. One day I sat admiring the olive trees for a good hour and didn't see a single other person! A wonderful wonderful stay, thank you so much.

“Totally amazing holiday, didn't want it to end!!”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2016

My sister and her husband to be first showed us pictures of Almendrillo and we instantly fell in love with the place and agreed that it would be the perfect place for them to get married. We arrived late at night and so didn't really get to see the sheer beauty of the place until the next morning, and my god it was even more perfect than the pictures showed it to be. We stayed in the blue room double, which was really spacious and had a fab en-suite shower room plus the added extra bonus of a very comfy bed. We loved the overall look of the finca, which was full of rustic charm with plenty of character plus with all the amenities you need. We have two teenage boys and they never moaned once that they were bored or didn't have anything to do which would have been normal for any previous family holiday. They just totally relaxed and enjoyed all that the finca had to offer, especially the very large swimming pool. We had our own car which was great when we fancied just going out exploring. The lake at Iznajar was brilliant with its large beach, pedalos, canoes and sunbeds. We were just in awe with all the surroundings anywhere we went. We even travelled into Marbella which was a wonderful experience on its own. We visited the local bar Antonios, which is just at the bottom of the hill, a few times for food and the largest cornetto's we had ever seen, the boys loved these. The only thing I would change was having to come home after the most perfect relaxing two weeks I have ever had.

“The perfect place in the perfect location for our perfect wedding day, truly breathtaking!!”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2016

We came across Finca El Almendrillo totally by chance, when looking for a wedding venue in Andalusia, instantly falling in love with the place. We just had to have our perfect wedding day in this stunning location. It was everything we had dreamed of and more. Remote, untouched and traditionally Spanish through and through. The Finca certainly gave us that and more. We first contacted Mike, the owner of the property back in early 2015 asking if our dates were available, which they were. Having weddings at the Finca before, Mike filled us with confidence from the outset and was on hand for the next 14 months leading up to our stay and wedding day. He helped us organise everything from caterers to the wedding coordinator and everything in-between. Even drinks, food and staff if we required them. The pain we gave him in the run up to the wedding was intense, but yet never too much trouble for Mike and his team at Almendrillo, who were instrumental in the planning and overall smooth running of our perfect wedding day. Now onto the property which can only be described as exquisite and unimaginably stunning. It is difficult to describe in words how breathtaking the house and location is. But I will try. We arrived late at night and were surprised at how out on it's own the Finca was, this was even more perfect than we had imagined. Walking into the courtyard and seeing the beautiful architecture of the huge farmhouse took our breath away, after, sitting with a glass of Rioja, gazing up at the enormity of the stars in the sky. Never had we felt more relaxed than we did right at that moment. We knew we had made the right choice of location for our two week holiday and wedding day. Our other 18 guests arrived later that night and were equally blown away by this gorgeous place. The facilities and bedrooms were equally amazing, we stayed in the main double and my god was it big, the bed was huge and comfy plus the bathroom and shower were great. But the best surprise was to come when we woke early on Sunday morning and opened our bedroom window. The view across the valley to the distant mountains can only be described as breathtaking. Myself and Jemma (my wife to be) spent at least 30mins fixated on this oil painting. It didn't look real, it was that perfect. We stayed with a large group of 20 people for two weeks, which in normal circumstances would start to grate on any normal person. But in reality, at the Finca, there were so many different places to get away and be on your own if you needed to that this was just not the case. Everyone in the party was so chilled out for our whole stay, it was just perfect. Even the children never got bored, they always had something to keep them occupied, from table tennis to swimming in the full size pool overlooking the valley, playing pool or just relaxing with the many books at the finca. I've never seen our kids more relaxed. The whole family were just at ease. Another bonus was where the Finca was located. The area is just beautiful, we spent numerous days down at the beach on the huge blue lake at Iznajar. With pedal boats, canoes, drinks and the most comfortable sunbeds. The kids loved it here and we would definitely recommend a visit to the cafe on the lake, the food is great value for money and traditionally Spanish, plus tastes amazing. Also in Iznajar town there is an English bar where we had our last meal out as a group, the food was amazing and they really looked after us. Plus we being the bride and groom got a free bottle of fizz, just for being there. Another invaluable thing was the information pack left in the finca by the team, this told us where the supermarkets were, where to eat out, how to walk to the bar in the village. Which was one fun experience through the olive groves, even though we were very hot and bothered when we got there for my stag do drinks. The cold beer and great free tapas put on by Antonio was well worth the walk. But now onto the main event, our wedding day, well this has got to be the most amazing and perfect day in our lives so far and made so by Finca El Almendrillo, Mike and the team at the location. Sian who manages the property was invaluable in the run up to the day and the caterers she recommended were just perfect. We wanted a relaxed and personal family orientated wedding ceremony and meal. Which is exactly what we got. Thanks to Mike and his teams recommendations, everything went better than we could every have imagined. We have added some pictures to the review to give an idea of our simple and perfect Spanish wedding day. Finally I'd like to thanks Mike and the team for their support in the run up to the wedding and for allowing us to enjoy such an authentic Spanish experience. We will definitely be returning to Almendrillo in the future. It's a must.

“Wonderful retreat”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2016

El Almendrillo was, if anything, better than advertised. Tastefully brought up to date, it retains a traditional feel and accommodated our group of 14 adults perfectly. It is set on a hillside at the very end of a small country road in the middle of a sea of olive groves, and views of the valley below are stunning. Other than the surrounding farms, there are few neighbors so it's peaceful and private. There are several outdoor areas for gathering and eating, including the courtyard where we ate every evening and the large, well maintained pool where we cooled off every afternoon. Granada is not far; Cordoba, Ronda and Malaga are within range too. Even closer, Loja and Iznajar are interesting.

“Awesome place - brilliant holiday - highly recommended!”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2016

We stayed at El Almandrillo with a group of friends - 18 of us, ranging from age 5 to semi-retired - and it was really amazing. A dream come true. What a perfect place for a holiday with friends and/or family! First, the location. We flew into Madrid Airport and it was a very easy, straight run that took about five hours or so. If you chose Malaga or another, closer airport it would be even easier to get there. And Mike's directions were great. As we wound our way to the villa through beautiful olive groves it felt like driving right out of the stresses and strains of the real world into a peaceful haven. And the views! The photographs give you an idea but in real life they are stupendous. You can sit and stare at the surrounding countryside all day. If you wanted, you could very easily stay at the villa for your whole holiday (I was tempted!). But it's easy to get out and about, to the Alhambra palaces (and very well worth the hour's easy drive), Malaga and Iznajar, which is really pretty and also worth the 15-minute drive. Back at the villa, there are so many lovely spots to relax in that we found it very easy to switch off and totally relax. The kids spent most of their time in the superb, huge pool (no near neighbours = no objections to screaming silliness!) while the adults could relax without worrying about them. We loved the hammock, the table tennis table (many tournaments were played and not just by the children) and the choice of outdoor furniture, including the poolside loungers where you could be in either sun or shade. Overall, the villa has such character and has obviously been restored with enormous care and cleverness. It was beautifully presented with lovely, comfortable furniture, plenty of spacious rooms and lots of bathrooms. One thing we loved about our bedroom was the shutters, which made it cool and dark - and we slept late every day! SO relaxing. The kitchen was well equipped and easy to use - we did a combination of eating out, cooking for ourselves and also were lucky enough to have a paella cooked for us one night by a gorgeous local cook who created two enormous pans that catered for both grown-ups and children, and all with complete discretion and charm. How she managed it I do not know. the piece de resistance was the courtyard with its long, thin outdoor table. A great site for a BBQ. Really pretty and so sociable - it was the centre of our week and we came and went, sat and chatted (drank a little!) and could not have enjoyed ourselves more. There was space for us to all spent time as one large group, or go off and read a book or have a nap somewhere if we wished. What more can I say. We would highly recommend El Almandrillo to anyone thinking of booking. Thank you so much Mike.

“Magical week in Spain”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2016

Having just enjoyed a magical stay at Finca el Almendrillo, we’d strongly recommend this to other visitors. We went as a group of four families all staying together, with ages ranging from 5 to 65 years, and all had a great time. The place is beautiful – the gorgeous old farmhouse, with beautiful interior décor, overlooks a stunning rural landscape (the pics on the website give a good feel for the real thing), and the property is big enough that four families can enjoy meals and drinks together in the courtyard, yet also have the space and time for privacy (e.g. swinging on a hammock overlooking the valley, enjoying coffee on the balcony, or swimming in the pool). There are also extensive lawns for sunbathing or playing, and for the more adventurous, rural tracks for running and walking. With such a big group, it was great to find a place where sporty people could be active while less sporty people could really relax and enjoy. The house and grounds are kept in lovely order. We were self-catering for the stay; the local shops sell delicious fresh fruit and veg and all the food is well-priced. As a treat, one night we paid a very reasonable amount for a local chef to come in and prepare paella for everyone, which was delicious. There are also plenty of places to eat and drink in local towns and we enjoyed coffee and treats in Iznajar when we went to see the citadel and peer out over the lakes, and also when we visited Granada for a trip to the Alhambra. The owners, Emma and Mike, and their local managers were all charming and helpful and we would like to thank them again for giving us such a wonderful family holiday.

“A fantastic villa perfect for large groups with children.”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

Mike the owner was a pleasure to deal with and couldn't do enough to help us, especially as we had a large party (7 couples with 10 children between us!). The villa was fantastic with several spacious bedrooms with ensuite. It was a nice mix of traditional Spanish with modern facilities. The kitchen was very well equipped and the outdoor space was fabulous. When the children went to bed, the adults sat in a different outdoor spot around the house each night. The swimming pool was huge and the children (and adults!) just loved it. They practically lived in it for the week! And the poolside area was perfect for relaxing in the sun, with plenty of sunbeds and also a canopy area for those wishing some shade. The views from the house were spectacular as it had an elevated position overlooking the exquisite Spanish countryside, it was breathtaking. We walked in to the local village a few times, which took about 20 minutes. There was a goat farm half way down which the children loved. The village had a small but well stocked supermarket and a nice restaurant/bar. All in all we had a really fantastic holiday and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this villa to large parties with children.

“Absolutely amazing place to stay!”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

Finca El Almendrillo is just fabulous. Our group (ten adults and seven children) couldn’t have been happier here. It’s in the middle of the most beautiful countryside where you really feel like you’ve escaped and can relax immediately. So many bedrooms, doubles, singles, adjoining family rooms, ensuite shower rooms, cots and highchairs – perfect for large groups. Plus so many areas to hang out, play pool and table tennis, the children can play on scooters and bikes, chill on the hammock… and not to forget the pool… HUGE! There’s a cupboard full of toys too – we took some down to the pool area and the kids sat in the shaded area while the adults played ‘lilo wars’… Handy loo and shower down beside the pool too – and plenty of sun loungers! The cobbled area with the bbq is fantastic – table is large enough to fit everyone. We’d move round to the other terrace about 9pm when the view was extra special – honestly, bring a good camera as you want to capture this view! The owner, Mike, was very helpful, as was Andy and also Ken – who we used for an airport transfer for one of the families. The rest of us hired cars – Mike’s directions to the house were spot on, as was his advice on where to shop and when. I helped with the supermarket shop on the first day and didn’t leave the house until we were on our way to the airport to return home. And I can safely say I didn’t want to leave. A week just wasn’t long enough. I would recommend this place to anyone – even the simple things like good, white linen on the beds, plenty of towels for everyone, a utility room, fans in all the rooms (much nicer than air conditioning), two fridges in the kitchen, and a very reasonable masseuse, oh and not to forget caterers, that will come to the house (!!) make it the type of place you’d want to return to. Book this place while you can!

“The perfect place for a celebration”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2013

In the 2 weeks we were at Finca el Almendrillo we had 60 guests each of whom stayed 4 nights and, without exception, they thought it was the most wonderful venue. We were all amazed by the staggering view, the rural peace and quiet, the comfortable accommodation, the impressive pool and the numerous interesting places to visit within reasonable reach. Mostly we were able to dine out in the delightful courtyard (with Spanish cuisine provided by the excellent caterers laid on for us by the owners, Mike and Emma) and on cooler evenings we were all able to eat in the Casita in front of a roaring fire. The large number of toys were also a great help in keeping the children happy when it was too cool or too sunny to be outside. We would have found the whole experience incredibly daunting without the very personal help given to us by Mike & Emma who went out of their way to give us every assistance before, during and after our stay. We can thoroughly recommend a stay at Finca el Almendrillo.

“Perfect for family and friends”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2012

The Finca is situated in the middle of the beautiful Andalucian countryside without any immediate neighbours, offering great privacy. It is remote and idyllic, accessed by a narrow country road that climbs the hill overlooking the local town and takes you through farms and olive groves and despite its rustic nature, was easily navigated by our very basic hired people carrier! We holidayed in the Finca with another family and the owner couldn’t have been more helpful in preparing for a great stay. We bombarded Mike before our departure with endless requests about cots, high chairs etc. and no request was too much for him. The attentive service before departure was matched by a very Warm welcome on arrival- a fridge with the essentials and the vast house set out as requested. The property itself was beautifully situated with ample space for the 12 of us (with plenty of space for more) with seemingly endless numbers of bedrooms to choose from. There is a beautiful open courtyard where we could all have dinner al fresco and upon request Mike had arranged for local chefs to come in and cook for us for a couple of the nights. The food and the setting were wonderful. The courtyard doubled up as a playground for the 5 children (and adults) who could entertain themselves for hours. There were huge numbers of distractions- a pool table, table tennis table, table football, Wi-Fi and of course the enormous swimming pool to keep us all entertained. The pool was the largest pool we had seen for such a holiday and had a wonderful almost 270 degree view of the beautiful tree covered hills surrounding the house. In short, we spent a wonderful week at the Finca all aided by great hosts who made the stay special and go without a hitch. We would thoroughly recommend this as a holiday destination- whether your family are young or old. I hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we did.
