Very Good

“Delightful place to stay”

Reviewed 14 Sep 2015

La Piastra is a comfortable house in a marvellous position with huge grounds looking out over the valley to the east and the mountains beyond. It's a delight to eat outside on the terraced lawns with scents of star jasmine in the evening air. Very peaceful. The swimming pool is large and pleasant (and must be a godsend in high summer). The owners are hospitable and generous. The house is clean and well maintained. If you don't know Garfagnana it's worth mentioning that it's scenically the best part of Tuscany, being the valley between two high mountain ranges. There are many attractive villages and small towns and castles, and the area feels unspoilt. The roads are not fast for driving but there's a rail service along the valley. It's a great area for walking and cycling; the Appenines are rounded and accommodating while the Alpi Apuani are spikier and more dramatic. We were mountain biking: Daniele Saisi has a web site describing excellent local routes. Castelnuovo itself is a pleasant if unspectacular relaxed town with gelaterias and restaurants, and Lucca not far away is one of our favourite towns in Italy. It would be hard to stay at La Piastra without a car (although we did manage just with bikes on our first stay). There is a good Conad supermarket at Gallicano and a useful smaller one at Castelnuovo.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. We are glad you enjoyed this special place...

“Well kept property in Wonderful location with perfect hosts”

Reviewed 8 Oct 2014

We had a lovely stay at La Piastra. The photos of the property do not do it justice. It it well equipped, clean and is in one of the lovliest locations with views across the valley from every window. We were able to move the table to a number of different spots throughout the huge garden to make the most of the sun at different times of the day. The pool is well maintained and has the advantage of afternoon shade allowing the children to play in it for longer, and has good seating and sunloungers. Our hosts were most delightful, and we were allowed to pick ripe tomatoes, zucchini and fruit from the trees. The gardens were beautifully maintained and we made use of the BBQ a and the pizza oven (which was fab). The whole family would love to to return again to this charming little villa.

“Beautiful area and friendly people”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2014

We arrived to a very clean and cosy house. The garden was well kept. The house was perfect for our family, as the boys could have their own room. The garden was almost a park and we enjoyed all the fruits and vegetables growing there. We spent a lot of time in the pool, yet it was a bit annoying with lots of flies biting the wet skin. Unfortunately the lamps in the pool didn't work, due to some heavy weather earlier this year, so we couldn't go for a night swim. We liked the porch and had almost all our meals there. The terrace next to the pool was great for relaxing in the afternoon. The WIFI was OK in the house, but always lost connection in front of the house and at the pool. The property hosts were very nice and helpful, eventhough they didn't speak english and we don't speak italian. There are nice places to eat in the village, and the Supermarket was only a short drive away. We loved the area and enjoyed the beautiful view from the property.

Thank you for your review and we are glad you had a great time! Apologies for the problem experienced with the pool lights - this has now been resolved. A shame also about the flies about this year. We are very lucky since we don't get mosquitoes in the area but unfortunately in 2014 with the rainiest year we have had for 100 years (we usually pray for some rain high season!) the flies and frogs all came out!

“beautiful house with lovely pool”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2014

We had a wonderful week in "la Piastra". Beautiful garden. House was bigger inside than I saw on the pictures. Nice patio and we enjoyed the BBQ and pizzaoven. Very private. Pool was large and deep, that was great. Only downside was the last stretch of road to the house. A little too bumpy for our low car.
