Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

This area has been inhabited since pre-historic times, followed by the Etruscans (900 BC) and the Romans.
Montepulciano offers some wonderful examples of renaissance architecture and is home to one of Italy's most famous wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Other nearby places of interest are Pienza, with its renaissance buildings and pecorino cheese, Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs and roman bath, both in the world heritage site of the Val d'Orcia, and Cortona above Lake Trasimeno. Siena, Florence, Perugia and Rome can all be visited by the day.

Gracciano

Apart from the artistic and historical treasures to be discovered, there are local festivities and events in every little town. To mention just a few, the donkey race in Torrita di Siena is accompanied by processions in medieval dress and an impressive flag waving performance, and the yearly barrel pushing contest up the streets of Montepulciano in August is immensely popular. At the internationally acclaimed Teatro Povero di Monticchiello where residents take part in an open-air theatre in the summer , local cooking can be sampled in the evenings in the crypt of the church. Last but not least the wonderful countryside and picturesque streets of the little towns make this a walker's paradise.

“Really worth staying!”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2012

My partner and I spent a glorious week this spring at agriturismo Il Salarco surrounded by vineyards and idyllic rolling countryside. The owner, an English lady called Laura, made us both feel really welcome, was fabulously knowledgeable about all the local wines and historic places to visit. She also recommended some great walks and excellent choices of restaurants - particularly in the beautiful hilltop towns of Montepulciano and Montefollonico which are really close by. The accommodation is first rate. We both really felt we had our own private Tuscan bolt hole in which to relax and enjoy our stay. We plan to visit again next year!

“Surrounded by Vino Nobile de Montepulciano vineyards a perfect centre for exploring this part of Tuscany”

Reviewed 25 May 2012

A tasteful relatively new conversion of agricultural buildings that works in every sense of the word. Comfortable, clean, light spacious recent conversion with up to date modern appliances in the kitchen and bathroom. Plenty of hot water and ecologically friendly loos. Our host Laura was most helpful and happy to point us in the direction of local sights, supermarkets and a great butcher. We found it a great place to stay from which we were able to do day trips to catch a few of the marvelous sights the area has to offer. Breathtaking views over some incomparable scenery, interesting museums, plenty of opportunities for bathing in thermal waters.
