Description

Barrusclet is set within its own 40 acres which is a mixture of garden, farmland (mostly hayfields) and oak woodland. The natural world is truly on the doorstep, and we regularly see deer, red squirrels, birds of prey, owls, bats, a huge variety of insect life, lizards, wild flowers and so it goes on. Our nearest neighbours grow vines and sunflowers, make hay, and keep a few lovely creamy cows that meander about in the distance. It all makes for a constantly changing and charming landscape, which remains interesting whatever the season. This really is an amazingly private and idyllic place to be. An evening BBQ beneath the stars, or a lazy lunch under the shade of our beautiful magnolia tree are perfect ways to relax on your holiday. Plenty of garden chairs and tables are available for you to use, as well as a hammock to lie back and dream in.

The Heated Roman style swimming pool (12m By 6m) is within view of the house and is sheltered on two sides by stone barns, and has views

The Heated Roman style swimming pool (12m By 6m) is within view of the house and is sheltered on two sides by stone barns, and has views across open countryside from the pool terrace. It is a saline pool, which everybody says is kinder to the eyes and skin than a chlorine pool. It is fenced and gated to comply with French regulations. There is a generous tiled terrace with a gazebo to offer shelter from the midday sun, and plenty of sun loungers. A really lovely pool to relax or play in.

There is also a large games room that offers table tennis, pool, table football, darts, board games and jigsaws and toys for younger children. Cycling holidays in France are great, and we have a large selection of bikes (about 15) available to our guests (from children's to adult's) and these are stored in the barn. It is not always easy to find bike hire in the midi-pyrennes, and it can be expensive. Our bikes are free for you to use. We also provide maps, puncture repair kits, bike pumps etc. We do not provide helmets, so you might want to bring your own. There is also free use of an excellent and picturesque village tennis court only 2km away.

Barrusclet is a fantastic base for family holidays, and for groups of friends to spend quality time together.

Location description from owner

The Midi-Pyrénées region

Barrusclet is located about midway between Toulouse and Bordeaux in the Midi-Pyrenees. The Gers region of France is very beautiful and there are lots of interesting medieval villages to visit. Our region is famous for Armagnac and Foie Gras. There are many vineyards within easy reach where you can drop in for a tasting, and most of the restaurants have local specialities on the menu. The countryside is rolling hills with far reaching views and we are surrounded by sunflower fields and vineyards. The weather is generally quite a bit warmer than the UK, and in the summertime we are always eating outside, and sitting under the stars until late evening.

Gondrin

Barrusclet is situated down a long track off a quiet country road. We are 3km from the village of Gondrin. Here you will find two boulangeries, a small supermarket, tabac, pharmacy, doctors, tourist information etc., everything you need for a self-catering holiday. There is also a small hotel and bar, and the largest outdoor manmade swimming lake in France. This area is great for families, with slides, inflatables, table tennis, tennis courts, children’s play area, and plenty of grassed area for sunbathing and picnics. Gondrin has a small Sunday market selling local fresh produce. A 2 minute drive, or short cycle ride in the other direction brings us to the tiny hamlet of Lauraet. We hold a key to the immaculate, yet barely used tennis court, which is overlooked by the pretty village church. Plenty of small villages are within easy reach, and many offer restaurants and bars for you to discover during your stay. Our favourite is the auberge in the lovely village of Fources, a tiny medieval village built in the round, with gorgeous flowers at every window. The plat du jour is 13 euros and includes 3 courses, wine and coffee. This village also hosts a flower festival and regular antique markets. Another local village is Montreal. It has a lovely square, with bars and restaurants, and hosts a medieval fayre in the Summer. It also has a small bull-fighting arena, where during the summer festival there is a bull-jumping contest. Not really our thing, but we were happy to see that the bulls were not hurt. The larger market town of Vic-Fezensac has a large bull-fighting stadium, where I think it is more serious. Vic-Fezensac also hosts a huge Latino Salsa Festival over one week in the Summer, and a weekly market. Most of the local villages host their own festivals throughout the summer, and these can be great fun with live music, eating and drinking, sporting contests, and firework displays. We have found the people to be very welcoming and there is a great sense of community. We are also only a few kilometres away from the tiny medieval fortified village of Larressingle. It is a really pretty spot, with a small café/restaurant, and a working museum of medieval weaponry. The pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela comes through this area, right past Barrusclet in fact, and the peaceful Abbaye de Flaran is just a short drive away. The larger towns of Eauze and Condom are 10-15 minutes drive away, and these both offer larger supermarkets, and a greater choice of restaurants and cafes. The river Baise runs through Condom, and river cruises are available. Our region is famous for Armagnac and Foie Gras. There are many vineyards within easy reach where you can drop in for a tasting, and most of the restaurants have local specialities on the menu. Other activities within an hours drive include: High Ropes courses, canoe trips, Wallabi World theme park, a great Go-Karting course, a Water Park, paint-balling, and horse riding. The Thermal Spa town of Castera Verduzan, and the Roman Villa at Seviac with its mosaic floors are both close by. Also there are numerous swimming lakes and pools with beaches and slides and play areas. If golf is your thing, there is an 18 hole championship course, Golf de Guinlet , at Eauze, Golf d’Albret at Barbaste, and Golf d’Auch-Embats near Auch. There are other courses in the region but if you are a keen golfer I would recommend that you do your own research so you know exactly what you are getting. We are approx. 2 hours from the Atlantic coast and The Pyrenees, and approx.3.5 hours from the Mediterranean. Lourdes is within striking distance, as is Marciac and its famous Jazz festival.

“A brilliant holiday”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2015

The house was everything we expected. The games room and pool were good. The barbecues and outside tables suited well. We cooked and ate well. The pool was ideal for all ages. We played cricket with the owners creating the Barrusclet Oval for daily family cricket. We all intend to return.

“First Class!”

Reviewed 26 Jan 2015

Can't praise this place enough! We went mid-September on a cycling holiday with a group of friends (12 people) and it proved to be a wonderful way to wind down and enjoy the last of the summer heat. The accommodation was excellent, with very much a French feel throughout the bathrooms and ground floor. When not cycling, the outdoor swimming pool and games room provided us with lots of entertainment and space to relax. Gill and Mark were brilliant hosts and advised us on some great places to eat locally, not too expensive either. So if you're after a relaxing summer, and looking to holiday with family and friends, you'd struggle to find much better than this. First class!

“A lovely place to stay in a beautiful area of France.”

A group of friends and I have stayed at Barrusclet for a week in each of the last two years. The farmhouse itself is perfect---comfortable beds, plenty of space,a games room, laundry, lovely grounds for eating outdoors and a heated outdoor pool, well fenced and safety-gated to keep children safe. The area is beautiful----vineyards and sunflower fields; local chateaux, churches, villages and markets to visit; and the undulating countryside is perfect for stress-free cycling. Canoeing and horse-riding is also nearby. It's so good----14 of us are going back again this year...!!!

“Welcoming country property with great facilities”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2014

Dear Mark and Gill We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our week at Barrusclet. The house is wonderful - you have done a fantastic job on the renovation, and the region is beautifully unspoilt with an impressive number of pretty towns and villages which we explored (mainly by your bikes!). Thank you for making us feel so welcome. Great range of activities at the house kept everyone entertained: ping pong, pool table, swimming, cycling (great local cycle path on disused railway), music room, well equipped kitchen, DVDs, wi-fi, strolling around the grounds and footpath, and tennis court up the road. Having left the house yesterday at 7.15 am, we just made it back to Caen for the 4.30 pm ferry!

“Magnifique!!!!”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2014

That's me and my family back from two fabulous weeks staying at Barrusclet. A big thank you for providing such a beautiful, picturesque and tranquil setting for us to re-charge our batteries. My family (along with my brother's family and my parents) loved Barrusclet - the space inside and out, the pool, the games room, the well equipped kitchen etc etc etc. Coming from a building background I can fully appreciate the renovation works - lovely job!!. My 10yr old girl especially loved playing with her cousins in the pool - they'd still be there if we hadn't dragged them away!! And the bikes satisfied my cycling daft 14 yr old son who loved the quiet peaceful roads and tracks around the area - watching the tour on TV also helped!! Playing tennis at our own 'private' court was well used with everybody joining in - Andy Murray better watch out :-). The water park in Gondrin, as you could imagine was a big hit with the children - a great facility. We didn't venture to far but did visit most of the surrounding villages and towns including Auch, Euaze, Montreal - we particularly enjoyed the beautiful little village (a common saying) of Forces, sitting drinking coffee and chilling in the sunshine. As the kitchen was so well-equipped we found cooking no problem - even I made a meal one night!! When we did eat out we found nothing but lovely, friendly service, good food and reasonable prices. We found the restaurant by the water park in Gondrin to be especially nice and also The Loft in Eauze and salted caramel crepes in Condom. All in all a fantastic holiday with only one downside.....it had to end!!!

“We wanted for nothing”

Reviewed 16 Jun 2014

It's always a bit of a stab in the dark when you choose a holiday home online to rent for your main holiday but it has to be said that this time we got it right! We wanted for nothing at Barrusclet! The property is amazing with views that we will never forget and it has a warm pool which was ideal for our children. Mark and Gill couldn't have been more helpful and as for the area, well, we were surrounded by wildlife, culture and vineyards. What more could you ask for? I would give this holiday home, the area and its owners 10/10. Spot on!

“Perfect holiday home in a beautiful, tranquil location.”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2013

We were a party of 4 adults and 7 boys of ages ranging from 4 to 14 years old. Barrusclet has so much to offer...the accomodation is 5 star and there is plenty to do...big pool, well equipped games room, wi fi, tv with lots of English channels, lots of well maintained bikes, tennis court (just up the road, no-one else was ever on it) and so much space for curious boys to explore outside the property. Gondrin, the nearest village/small town was close enough to do a quick bread run (car/bike) to the bakery every morning and has a big enough supermarket for stocking up on essentials. We stayed for two weeks and it was bliss. I will never forget the sight and scent of the stunning magnolia tree... Thank you Gill and Mark!

“Truly amazing property in a lovely location.”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2012

Our group - made up of two families with a total of four adults and six children - spent two fantastic weeks at Barrusclet in August 2012. The house is excellent - the bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas have been carefully planned and beautifully furnished. The pool is great as is the "games barn" which would have been invaluable has the weather been unkind (no chance of that, temperatures in the 30s for two weeks). Mark and Gill the owners are incredibly helpful and thoughtful - the welcome pack made up of quality gastronomic items was fabulous. The local area in incredibly peaceful and picturesque with charming villages and towns within easy reach. We will definately be returning.

“Lovely holiday”

Reviewed 31 Jan 2012

Well-renovated house which retains its character, in peaceful rural location within cycling distance of small town. Very nice pool, quiet roads to explore by bike, and tennis courts nearby. Plenty of places of interest to visit in the area. Games room great for teenagers. For us (a group of 5 adults and 4 teenagers), it provided the right mixture of relaxation and activity. We love this region so much we have just bought our own house there!

“If this property was mine i'd never leave!”

Reviewed 24 Jan 2012

This property and its glorious location manage to offer everything a large family group could want . Those that want to explore the area on foot, bike or car have plenty to go at but equally if a total rest is needed then this place is tranquility itself.. . this feels like a HOME and you literally want for nothing as every comfort and detail has been very thoroughly thought through. We really enjoyed big family mealtimes which were easy to cater for because of a well equipped kitchen. We have stayed in properties that are not equipped to cater/seat for the number they can sleep! The property was beautifully clean and bedrooms' enormous with equally impressive bathrooms. Overall i think the most difficult decision is how long can you stay. . . you will not want to leave and if it was mine i wouldn't! ! !
