The Tuscany region

Lucca is the most wonderful small town; its famous walls enclose a place that can be walked or cycled with ease yet remains full of secrets. One of Italy's finest mediaeval treasures, the centre is unspoiled and is sprinkled with palazzi, towers and almost countless splendid churches. The surrounding hills produce some excellent wines and arguably the finest olive oil anywhere, whilst the beaches and nightlife are but a small hop away. You can visit the house where Giacomo Puccini was born or visit the famous Villas of Napoleons sisters.

Gombereto

The nearest town Bagni di Lucca offer a wide variety of restaurants and eating opportunities, from pizza’s cooked in traditional stone clay ovens, to full on silver service in a top restaurant. What ever you choose you are guaranteed mouth watering quality local produce, cooked to perfection.

Bagni di Lucca also offers understated nightlife on the local quite side, but with many places serving until 2am.

“Charming, characterful, quiet”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2013

Casa Arco offers simple but charming accommodation in a remote hillside village. The views from the house are truly spectacular and there are lots of lovely walks in the nearby woods. The pool at Bagni di Lucca is wonderful and the coastal town of Lirici has amazing beaches. We went to Florence by train and the journey was easy and very cheap. Don't miss the demanding but spectacular walk along the Orrido.

“Simply Stunning”

Reviewed 29 Apr 2012

Wow! What a place. The village in which this house is stunning. The altitude means you have clean crisp air and spectacular views down the valley. Several mornings we awoke to fantastic views of the mist and the fog hanging in the valley below. If you want tranquility and a location to unwind in, then this place is just tops. The house is well appointed, the rooms are spacious and it provides a perfect backdrop from which to really enjoy this region. There's several fantastic restaurants and bars the main town, and it's well worth popping down in the morning to sit by the river and enjoy a fantastic coffee while taking in the atmosphere. Being in the middle of the region means you're only a short drive from some spectacular towns, villages and superb scenery. I'd recommend taking a picnic up to the fort Verrucole, it's a quiet place for a great day out with stunning views up and down the valley. Also don't be afraid to get the train to Florence, it's quick, reliable and a lot easier than trying to find a place to park in the center of the city! Can't wait to go back to this house again! Wonderful.
