Description from owner

Description

This is an area for the individualist. If you cannot bear to be more than 2 metres from another tourist; if you enjoy lager louts, noisy bars, tacky shops, rip-off restaurants, burger gases, traffic jams and impossible parking, this is not the place for you.

But why be stampeded into an overcrowded overpriced tourist ghetto? Instead,,treat yourself to a little Beverly Hills style and opulence. Unlike many modern villas, this is not a sterile box: it has real warmth and character – and a true wow! touch. How many lounges can lose a grand piano in one corner?

This vast lounge/dining room (with fireplace) has wrap-around glazed doors on three sides. The view out over the pool to the distant hills evokes oohs and aahs from first-time visitors, but it is even more spectacular from the balcony off the master bedroom suite above. This enormous suite has its own lounge, dressing room and bathroom with both bath and separate power shower.

The other two double bedrooms

This enormous suite has its own lounge, dressing room and bathroom with both bath and separate power shower.

The other two double bedrooms – one on the ground floor (with double bed), the other on the upper floor (twin beds) also have en-suite showers, plus glazed doors to a small terrace.

Downstairs again, the good-size ultra modern fitted kitchen with granite worktops and island is open plan to the lounge, so that chef does not feel cut off.

In the lounge is a big plasma TV, tuned to a British satellite. There is under-floor heating throughout, plus a log fire.

The villa stands at the end of a country lane in a small hillside hamlet, just four minutes’ drive (or a long walk) from the town of Lousã, which has several supermarkets, restaurants, shops, a lido and one of Portugal’s very finest beauty spots, by Arouce Castle.

Step out of the door straight onto a track leading up until the hills, wonderful for rambling, and where you might stumble upon one of the ‘lost’ slate villages. The views are genuinely jaw-dropping.

For a bit of bustle, the medieval riverside university city of Coimbra, Portugal’s third city and with some big shopping malls, is barely half-an-hour away.

Despite the area being unspoiled by mass tourism, English is widely spoken and most of the better restaurants have English menus -.and are astonishingly good value.

This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, noted for the great wild swimming in the warm, clear waters of the rivers and lakes. Like many other visitors, you might return wondering why this European paradise is not better known, but very glad it isn’t!

Other things to do:

*Vast golden beaches of the Silver Coast (Costa de Prata),

*kayak/boat on the river;

*lovely walks and drives through the hills and the 'lost' mountain villages; *'Portugal Pequinitos' - a fantasy model village with Portugal's great buildings in miniature, but still large enough to walk through, plus humbler houses accessible only to children;

*Conimbriga - the ancient Roman capital with some of the best mosaics in Europe;

*World Heritage Tomar, a lovely old town with Knights Templar castle and convent;

*Horse-riding;

*Open-air zoo plus farm zoo;

*Gondola rides on the canals of Aveiro;

*The Holy Shrine at Fatima and the nearby beautifully lit caves;
