The Lake District
The Lake District National Park encompasses mountains, lakes, traditional villages, beautiful valleys and stunning landscapes. You can't help but be inspired ... at any time of year!
The Lake District and its beautiful scenery have inspired writers, artists and mountaineers for centuries. It is also home to about 40,000 people who live and work here. Mountain walks include Scafell, Helvellyn and Blencathra and there are numerous valley walks for more leisurely days out. There are mountain bike centres at Whinlatter Mountain Forest and Grisedale Forest and various trails throughout the National Park. The nine principal lakes offer numerous opportunities for sailing, rowing, swimming, kayaking, wind surfer ... or a trip on a traditional steamer.
The main centres of Keswick, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere have a wonderful choice of museums and visitor attractions as well as cinemas, theatres and restaurants. Virtually every village has a cosy pub or cafe and there are many traditional country homes, such as Dalemain, Lowther Castle or Sizergh Castle, to visit.
The Lake District is a special corner of the world so come and explore.
The Ullswater valley is in the north east of the Lake District National Park and combines the beauty of Ullswater lake with the majesty of the Lakeland fells.
The villages of Glenridding and Patterdale are at the southern end of Ullswater and have most of the services you may need on holiday: shops, cafes and pubs, restaurants, National Park information centre, petrol station, post office, Church, medical centre (which you hopefully won't need!) .... and a warm welcome.
Dovedale apartment is situated in the hamlet of Grisedale Bridge, a small group of houses midway between Glenridding and Patterdale. It is easy to reach but hidden away from the hustle and bustle down a quiet lane. From your door, you can climb Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield, Place Fell or High Street or enjoy valley walks to Brotherswater or Aira Force. The lake is less than a 10 minute walk away and here you can go sailing, have a go a kayaking, hire a rowing boat or motor boat or just paddle or swim in the lake. There are also regular steamer trips to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. The 7 mile walk from Howtown to Glenridding was described by Wainwright as one of the best walks in the Lake District and it is a wonderful introduction to the area.
Keswick, Ambleside and Grasmere are about a 30 minute drive from Dovedale apartment ... and it is a fantastic drive in either direction. The Eden Vally is about a 30 minute drive and has some lovely villages and quiet lanes to explore.
Dovedale is ideally located for your holiday.
