Description from owner

Description

La Vieille Grange in Semoussac is a quality conversion of a wine producing barn, the gite offers couples privacy, relaxation, views, large all weather garden room (with full width, sliding glass doors), acre of garden, 11x5m swimming pool & all mod cons (incl aircon in bedroom).

It is different in many ways, offering the best of both worlds in its facilities, its location and in the atmosphere the owners strive to create !

Located in countryside, surrounded by vineyards and rolling Charente Maritime countryside but within 10 minutes of the Gironde estuary (with nature reserve and bird sanctuary) and quiet marinas, it is within 30 minutes of a nice beach with lots of lovely local places to visit and with easy access to the life of Bordeaux & La Rochelle.

The gite is specifically designed around the needs of couples (or 2 friends !) and Martin and Christopher take pride in welcoming and respecting the diversity of their guests, regardless of background.

The gite consists of :

On ground floor :

kitchen/dining room : modern and fully equipped incl full sized oven & ceramic hob, breakfast bar, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave, dining table/chairs and direct dial telephone/answering machine

living room : with Godin log burner, TV/video with English (BBC, ITV, Film4 etc) & French channels, DVD player, CD/radio/cassette player & sofa (a sofa-bed can be provided for people not able to get up the stairs, subject to availability)

bathroom : bath with wall mounted shower attachment

separate WC

entrance hall, with spiral staircase up to :

On 1st floor, in the converted grenier/loft, 2 large bedrooms (each approx 6mx3m / 18ftx9ft into the eaves - although with some low beams) :

main double bedroom for 2 people, incl. sitting area with sofa and aircon ... and French windows with views across countryside towards the estuary (and the sunsets !).

mezzanine double bedroom for additional 2 people, leading to main bedroom

and outside :

an enormous (6x4 metre) all weather & all year round garden room/terrace with triple sliding patio doors, opening onto pool area and stunning views across garden and valley beyond

If/when you need heating in the garden room, there is a log burner if you just want a quick bit of added warmth there is a stylish infra-red gas radiator

So if it's a bit drizzly you can still relax and enjoy a good book (or an even better bottle of wine !) whilst enjoying the "being in the garden" feeling and gazing at the views across garden and valley to the village beyond !

And when it stops drizzling and warms up - just open up as much or as little of the patio doors as you want - opening up as much as 2/3rds of the room to the garden.

With a choice of furniture : easy chairs; wood steamer-style chairs or deckchairs. Plus dining table & chairs, coffee table and side tables.

plenty of choice of garden furniture (wood or PVC sun-loungers, chairs, tables & parasols), plus BBQ and 2 bikes

use of 11mx5m swimming pool - May to October incl. The pool is approx 1m in the shallow end and approx 2m at the deep end, with a diving board *

use of garden - approx 1 acre - incl boules pit and picnic area with 2nd BBQ

with pool and garden shared only with the owners and from time to time their guests. Yours is the only gite, and normally you will have the pool entirely to yourselves !

and the ever popular "finishing touches" :

with your confirmation letter, you'll get our colour information booklet - with everything from our favourite places to eat and drink, to the all important opening times of local supermarkets - and of course maps and directions for getting to us !

and waiting for you when you arrive :

fresh flowers to gladden the eye

our complimentary "Post Travelling Recovery Kit" otherwise known as our "Welcome Pack", including a bottle of wine (for you to celebrate the start of your holiday !) and provisions for an evening snack and morning breakfast - so you don't need to go to a supermarket after travelling ! (Pack includes : bottle of wine, olives, bread, croissants, milk, cheese, orange juice, tea, coffee, sugar, margarine, pasta & pesto sauce)

an abundance of up to date tourist maps, guides and leaflets - carefully organised to make it easy to find just what you want (yes, Chris IS that sad !)

availability of an extensive DVD & video library (to accompany that late night bottle of wine perhaps ?)

Wi-fi coverage is provided on request (subject to availabilit) if you bring a wi-fi enabled laptop.

the gite Information Folder with details of everything from the latest weather forecast to information about how to use all the gite's facilities

“A relaxing holiday in a lovely gite, with great hosts.”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2017

As with our first visit, Chris and Martin were delightful hosts who helped to make it one of our most relaxing holidays ever. We were given a daily weather forecast, which turned out to be more accurate than the "official " one! The food pack left for us on arrival was especially welcome as we’d not had time to shop. The Gite is lovely- spotlessly clean, and equipped with everything a visitor to France could possibly need. The pool cover was removed ready for our use each day, and it was great to be able to wander about the grounds, picking figs and apples from the trees. Needless to say, We would thoroughly recommend La Vielle Grange!

Owner's reply: Mike - many thanks for your very kind review. We are delighted to hear that you found your 2nd visit to La Vieille Grange to be as welcoming as the 1st ! For our part, it was a pleasure to see 2 guests who were so clearly enjoying everything - figs and apples included ! We look forward to welcoming you both back again in due course. Best wishes, Chris and Martin

“Friendly,relaxing home from home”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2016

Spent a very enjoyable & peaceful two weeks at La Vielle Grange. The gite was spacious & very well equipped with everything you need. A wonderful terrace room looked out on the lovely, large garden & pool with a view to the village over the fields. Martin & Chris were very friendly hosts, providing excellent information & directions, a much appreciated welcome basket and throughout our stay many suggestions for places to visit & things to do. We would hope to return soon.

Owner's reply: Paul Many thanks for your great review ! We're pleased you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back ! We'll send you some photos of the gaggle (is that the word ?) of hoopoes that visited the garden during your stay ! The most we've ever seen at one time - must have been your bird hunting safaris in the garden that attracted them ! Thanks again ! Martin and Chris

Chris and Martin were extremely helpful and informative without being intrusive. The booklet provided before arrival, told us everything we needed to know about food, places to see and the best directions yet on how to find the gite. The gite itself was very well equipped, the flowers and welcome pack of food were a really nice touch and very useful as we were late arriving. Surrounding views across the swimming pool and beautiful garden were a delight. The gite is also in a super location for visiting local attractions. We have been using gites for over 40 years and not easily impressed, however, this year we were so impressed we have already booked for next year! Tres bon!

Owner's reply: Many thanks for taking the time to write your very kind review - much appreciated ! We look forward to your return visit next year ! Best wishes Chris and Martin

“Everything we wanted - and more!”

Reviewed 10 Jul 2014

We were met on arrival by Chris & Martin, owners of the gite, & welcomed with a hamper of goodies: food for a quick supper & breakfast next day, a bottle of wine & flowers! The house was spacious & very well equiped, including a dishwasher; the garden was huge & beatifully stocked with flowers & shrubs, & well tended; but the pool was the highlight, bigger & better than expected, it was well used on our stay. The location was excellent, within 5 minutes of the A10 motorway (but surrounded by farms & gorgeous countryside), & loads to do around the Gironde estuary. This area abounds in pretty villages, beaches, wildlife, vineyards, as well as the beautiful & historic city of Bordeaux - not to be missed. Little to fault (we won't mention the low beams in the bedroom - ouch!), Martin & Chris go the extra mile to make their guests welcome & comfortable, providing maps & literature so that you make the most of your stay in this lovely place. We look forward to our return visit next summer!

“Pure indulgence - France at its best”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2013

Upon arrival at La Vieille Grange, its tranquility and charm completely captured us and we have returned home fully under its spell. The gite itself is very well equipped and the garden room is a stunning place to chill in the evening with a glass of wine and stunning views of the pool and village in the distance. The pool stayed at a beautiful 28C for the two weeks we stayed and was so very refreshing and needed during the hot days. The air conditioning in the bedroom was also very well received and made the hot sticky nights bearable. La Vieille Grange is a magical place with its beautiful surrounding gardens, lavender & a fig tree standing tall. We took our little dog with us and it was a fully secured garden so we had no worries about her escaping. She even had a holiday romance with the host's cute dog! The hosts Chris and Martin were brilliant too, so helpful and generous but at the same time very discreet and even dog sat for us some nights! Their attention to detail is second to none and recommended the most amazing restaurants and places to visit. The estuary and surrounding villages are all within striking distance, along with the beaches up near Royan and further north. Local markets are held every day in various towns and these were a joy to explore. All in all an excellent holiday, beautiful surroundings, fabulous hosts & a perfect escape for anyone - we will definately return.

“Tranquil,relaxing holiday in excellent accommodation”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2012

I would recommend this gite to couples looking for a place to recharge their batteries; peaceful, quiet, relaxing. Having sole use of the pool is a big plus. The owners, Chris and Martin, are very helpful and hospitable without being intrusive. Very pretty garden set in the depths of French countryside. Our second visit and we hope to go again.

“Excellent gite in fantastic surroundings”

Reviewed 17 May 2012

Stayed for one week at La Vielle Grange and it wasn't long enough; it was our first visit to the Charante-Maritime area of France and there are so many fabulous paces to visit. The countryside is just gorgeous. As for the gite itself , it was absolutely perfect - so rare to find a rental for just 2 people that gives you your own pool - all the facilities were excellent and the hosts, Chris and Martin, were brilliant. Right from the booking through to the actual stay they were great. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend la Vielle Grange - a definite 5 star holiday!

“Lovely rural gite with an excellent service”

Reviewed 2 May 2012

We really enjoyed our 3 nights stay at La Vieille Grange. The gite looked even better than we expected! Quiet area, nice little hamlet, very friendly service, superb pool and garden, ... Despite the rain (sometimes really heavy), we'll be back in September.

“A splendid gîte with everything as promised and even more ...”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2011

A very quiet and beautiful garden with a marvelous panoramic view ... Well equiped gîte, good accomodation and excellent pool. We really loved it and appreciated the friendly welcome too.

“Just perfect.”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2011

The Gite is charming and comfortable, the location is peaceful and relaxing, Martin and Chris are perfect hosts. Every little detail is thought of, from the welcome pack on your arrival (bit of a life saver if you arrive late) to the compressive 'guide' to how everything in the Gite works, and every detail in-between. You can use the Gite as the perfect quiet get away or as a base for visiting the surrounding areas - we preferred to the first - and the private pool and gardens help to make this one of my favorite places to visit. 10 out of 10.
