The Catalunia region
The province of Girona is very proud to be in Catalonia which has its own rich and unique heritage within Spain. In Girona you will hear both Catalan and Spanish spoken and you will see cultural icons such as its food, music and dance and particularly its flags are on display. In Girona you will find regional specialities such as those at the famous Celler de Can Roca restaurant currently number one in the world! Family restaurants such as this can be found on every street and can be excellent value during the week with a daily menu for around 10€. If Barça football club are playing you can join in the fun at every bar and you will know exactly when each goal arrives! If you enjoy sports then cycling is the next most popular past time after football. There are many bike hire shops, stimulated by the 6 professional teams based in Girona and you will find trails for every level of expertise. For walkers you can start out from Girona itself and use the old railway path to reach either the Cost Brava or head inland into the beautiful valleys of the Garrotxa. Catalonia, and indeed Spain, has a festival for every month of the year featuring food and the arts. Most wonderful of all is the absolutely free flower & plant festival held in every available space in Girona in the second week of May. it's a perfect time to go exploring.
The apartment looks over the River Onyar and this snakes its way through the ancient city of Girona. There are many pedestrian bridges linking the old town with the new so that even on the hottest Summer day you can find a little corner to relax and stay cool. The old town of Girona has a long history from the Iberian settlers, through the Roman occupation, linking the Jewish and Moorish expulsion and on to the impending Catalan Independence referendum in 2014. There are museums churches and cathedrals which chart this history, but best of all is just wandering the old walls and exploring the fascinating streets of the city. on the river banks, the Rambla, there are a host of independent shops selling everything from Roman uniforms to pottery angels and in the modern sector you can find all the popular Spanish high street clothes shops. For those tired of shopping the squares have open air cafés to while away the hours and do a spot of people watching.
