An exquisitely converted farmhouse in the village of Gharb, right in the heart of rural Gozo and close to the world heritage site of the Azure Window in Dwejra, at the western end of the island

The house is completely built of local limestone, a unique feature that distinguishes the island from the rest of the Mediterranean islands. Its walls form a beautiful mosaic throughout, and the stones' varying colours, their texture and shape transport the visitor back to centuries past, giving the property that special sensation and character of old rustic buildings

An old millroom, its whole width spanned by wide arches, welcomes the visitor into a large and comfortable living area, off which is a fully equipped kitchen including micro wave and washing machine. This leads to a private pool and deck area with BBQ, washroom and toilet facilities.

Sleeping arrangements consist of 5 bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities, distributed on three floors. For the complete convenience of the visitor, one bedroom is situated on the ground floor, whilst the other two floors of the house hold two bedrooms each, making the farmhouse capable of comfortably hosting a large family group.

The Island of Gozo region

Gozo forms part of the Maltese Archipelago and right in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. Gozo's small size is deceptive and its rich history and unique landscape catches the inexperienced traveller by surprise. Inhabited since mythical times, Gozo's retains an aura of unblemished beauty, still largely intact and accessible to all. The Islands history and past cultures are evident from its temples (thought to be the oldest standing structures in the world) and forts dotted around the countryside and along its shoreline. An old walled city dominates the centre of the island, high above its surrounding villages.

Terraced fields, bordered by miles of old rubble walls, slope down a myriad of hills and valleys, making the countryside an irresistible lure for ramblers, especially during the winter months when the island attains a green golden hue all round. Meanwhile the sea around its shores is crystal clear and the hidden rocky coves invite the snorkellers with their safe bathing almost throughout the year.

Gozo – covers an area of 67 km or 26 square miles, it is 9 miles long by 4 ½ miles wide and known as the sleepy island full of grace and charm.

Gozo's population is about 31,000 (approx). Despite its compact size, Gozo has a lot to offer. Historical places can be found in an abundance, as a visit to the Ggantija temples is a must! It is believed that these temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt in actual fact. They date back to 3.500 years B.C !

Gozo – Other places of interest include the museum of Archaeology in Victoria, which is full of archaeological remains and pre-historic artefacts. The Citadel (Victoria 'Capital City'), the folklore museum in Gharb, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso's Cave, which can be found in Xaghra. 'Ta Pinu' Sanctuary, where, at the turn of the century a local peasant woman had apparitions from Our Lady, is a very special and Holy Place.

Xewkija Dome dedicated to St. John the Baptist is the largest dome on Gozo, 'Ta Cenc' cliffs and Dolmens, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock all in Dwejra, Ramla Bay one of the Maltese islands largest beaches with its unique orange coloured sand and the old part of Victoria are places to note and visit, whilst on the island of Gozo. If you're looking for a destination that offers more than just a suntan, Gozo will definitely deliver beyond your expectations!

Gharb village lies in the West of the Island. It started life as a small hamlet centuries ago. The decorated and sculpted stone balconies found in the village square witness its ancient roots. Approximately 1266 people live in the village. Gharb village is surrounded by two small villages namely San Lawrenz and Ghasri. The baroque church is found in the village square. Countryside walks are ideal for visitors to explore during spring and autumn. Places of interest in the village are the folklore museum, Crafts village, San Dimitri chapel, Taz-Zejt Chapel, Ta' Pinu Shrine, and the window 'Tal-Mielah'.

Should you fancy a day at the beach Ramla Bay with its unique honey-red sand is the largest and most popular beach on the island and can be reached by car in 10 minutes.

The village feast is celebrated on the first week of the month of July and is dedicated to the Visitation of Our Lady to St Elizabeth. At this time of year one will see the village decorated and see spectacular firework displays, where the village succumbs to a wonderful vibrancy.

"Lovely villa. Needs a few items upgraded."

This is our fourth visit to the wonderful island of Gozo. We booked a large villa as there were 6 adults (3 couples). The villa was very spacious and clean, however a few things could be improved. Firstly the kitchen utensils were very mediocre the villa was meant to accommodate 10 people yet only a two slice toaster was provided. No electric kettle was available, we had to use a hob boiling one which didn't whistle and we also had issues with lighting the gas. Reported the faulty cooker on the first day but no repair was made. The bedding for all the rooms was very old and bobbly which I particularly found uncomfortable to sleep on. I would have replaced it many years ago. I do think they need to invest in new bedding for each room as it was very poor quality and virtually see through. The main settee in the living room had a cover over it and upon inspection had again seen better days and was rather uncomfortable to sit on with springs poking through. These issues let the villa down. The main pool area was lovely with good quality sun loungers but poor quality (broken) sun umbrellas. It was such a shame that these little, easily solved niggles could be rectified and would make the villa more comfortable. Lastly no bedding was changed during the week. I did enquire but apparently this cost extra. The villa wasn't cheap and a quick change of bedding would have been appreciated especially as it's very warm and humid at night.
