Description from owner

Description

Sitting majestically on a limestone escarpment and surrounded by our own vineyards, the holiday house at Chateau de Claribes has magnificent views over our own valley to the front, and vineyards to the rear. Peacefully situated in the heart of the countryside, yet only 3km from the pretty village of Gensac, our visitors enjoy the tranquil, relaxed pace of life, with close proximity to all the services of village life.

The small village of Claribes, with just 10 permanent residents, is a site of historic interest. The buildings are more than 400 years old, with a small (former) chapel and priory at the heart of the hamlet. Chateau de Claribes is proud to have an access to limestone caves that traverse under the main house towards Gensac.

The house provides an ideal base for exploring the Bordeaux region rich in culture, architecture, activities, food and wine. Or just a relaxing, peaceful home to enjoy the tranquillity of the vineyard covered hills and valleys.

On arrival, you pass through the flower-filled front garden to the door, where you enter into the middle of the very spacious ground floor space (13m x 6m with high ceilings). One huge cooking, eating, relaxing space, there is plenty of dining and lounging furniture for six. An abundance of cookware, crockery and cutlery ensures meals can be relaxed. Former guests have entertained 11 people easily! The living area has a sofa, chairs, TV with DVD player, iPhone dock, books and a selection of board games. The wood burner provides warmth and ambience for chilly early spring or late autumn visits.

On the first floor are two double bedrooms, one with en suite shower room with shower, loo and washbasin. Each bedroom has hanging space and drawers for clothing. The family bathroom has bath (with shower over), loo and washbasin.

Large, soft fluffy towels will be in the bathrooms, and the beds made up for you on arrival, with plenty of pillows, duvets and crisp cotton sheets.

The house was renovated with sustainability in mind. Keeping the character of this centuries old farmhouse, we've sympathetically installed new plumbing and electricity to meet today's needs. Locally crafted tiles and wooden floors, rugs made from natural materials, and furniture from the village cabinet maker, all help to reduce our carbon footprint. We only use water-based paints and ensure that we buy from companies who also have a reputation for sustainability. We can provide allergen-free pillows and duvets on request.

The private gardens to the front and rear of the house have dining and lounging furniture, with parasols and a barbecue. There's plenty of space for outdoor games - badminton, frisbee, boules, basket, rugby and foot balls, etc; are available. There is private parking for two cars.

You are welcome to explore amongst the vines, walk through our fields down to the river for paddling and picnicing, or sit by our babbling natural source of water to experience the tranquility of Claribes.

Help yourself to the herbs in the front garden of your holiday home. Collect seasonal fruit and nuts from the gardens - plum, cherry, mirabelle, greengage, fig, green fig, almonds, walnuts, etc.

We can provide you with running, walking and cycling routes and a wealth of information about local activities and interesting places to visit.

Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Nestled amongst the vineyards of Bordeaux, the region offers many wine related activities as well as Bastide towns to visit; markets to explore; Brocantes to browse and river-based activities. For city lovers, visit beautiful Bordeaux for culture, history, antiques, shopping and culinary delights. St Emilion's car-free, steep cobbled streets and narrow alleyways make this an interesting village to explore. Our closest town of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande provides independent shops, large supermarkets, as well a lively Saturday morning market. Around the Bassin d'Arcachon are interesting fishing villages to mooch around. Visit the oyster farmer "cabanes"; climb the highest sand dune in Europe and feast on local produce.

Gensac

The pretty village of Gensac is within walking distance, along a very quiet country lane or through the vineyards, or 5 minutes by car. In the village you will find a butcher; baker; small grocery store; a weekly market; pharmacy; and two restaurants, bank machine and doctor - everything for daily needs! The village hosts a huge brocante in August, a music festival in July, and night markets throughout the summer where locals and visitors enjoy meeting up to enjoy good food from local producers with delicious local wine.

“An idyllic location to escape and explore”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2016

This was a return visit for us and our two children (5 and 1). We love the peaceful and safe setting of the house - the children loved running between the vines. The house itself is really well equipped. There are lots of thoughtful touches, like the ice box and picnic blanket. Helen and Nick provide a really useful digest of local information, and there is a wealth of things to do and see - lots of markets, castles, lakes and towns to explore.

“Peaceful setting among the vineyards”

Reviewed 9 Jul 2012

What a lovely weekend we had visiting Chateau Claribes! Nestled in the quiet village of Claribes, population 10, we drank the award winning organic wines of the chateau and relaxed between canoe trips on the Dordogne. Helen & Nick were friendly and welcoming throughout our visit and full of recommendations and tips about the area. Helen even offered to shop for us before we arrived. Thanks to her suggestion to head to the market in Ste Foy la Grande, we enjoyed the best pain au chocolat we have ever tasted! Nick gave us an interesting & informative tour of the vineyards & winery followed by a tasting. The house was spotless with simple French chic decor and fully loaded with games & dvds. I wish we could have stayed longer!

“Homemade wine, sunset, vineyards - perfect!”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2011

Recently renovated to a good standard, this accommodation offers lovely views over the vineyards to sit and relax over some of their home grown wine. It has 2 good size bedrooms and the bathrooms are really nice too. Helen and NIck are really welcoming and do everything possible to make your stay great. The property was really clean when we arrived and you don't need to do anything when you check out which is also great. Accomodation is well equipped but currently does not have a high chair (although I think they may buy one), TV/DVD, microwave or washing machine.

Owner's reply: Hi. Thanks for taking the time to send your review comments. We bought a high chair, very similar to the one you recommended and it's been successfully used! Since your stay, we've installed a television and DVD/CD player. As well as the games, books and travel guides in the holiday house, visitors can also borrow DVDs from our extensive collection.

“Everything was perfect and so beautiful. Wish I was back there now.”

Whilst visiting Gensac and St Emillion for a wedding weekend we booked Chateau de Claribes. From the moment we arrived we had such a warm welcome from Helen who owns the cottage and vineyard. We were immediately impressed as the surroundings were so peaceful and stunning (yet still very close to Gensac). The cottage was gorgeous, so clean and decorated in a modern french shabby chic style adorned with peonies and fresh roses from the garden. It also had a fantastic modern kitchen, which had everything (even a dishwasher!). Wine (from the vineyard) had also been left chilling in the fridge!! We had a baby of 5 months with us and I think he enjoyed his stay as much as us. The cot was so clean and comfy as the baby slept well all 3 nights! Overall the cottage was perfect and Helen was so kind taking us wine tasting and helping us with Taxi's. It was a perfect weekend.
