Location description from owner

The Chania Prefecture region

Western Crete is the greenest section of the island, with many Olive groves, pine trees, designated forestry land and numerous beeches dotted around the coast.

There are many tavernas, bars and a variety of cuisine to suit all tastes. Apokoronas is close to the main highway (E75) and so is well placed for more extensive travel around the island with knosos a very doable day trip. There is also easy access to excursions to other places of interest e.g. The Samaria Gorge, the biggest gorge in Europe and many other historical places of interest.

Heraklion, is 122km from Gavalochori and approximately two hours by car direct on the national highway. This makes Heraklion Airport a good second choice to Chania Airport 35km away.

Village festivals in the region begin in July and carry on through August.

The climate is wonderful; typically no rain from June to September.

Gavalochori

Gavalohori is a large old village with particularly interesting and well-preserved folk architecture. In this officially protected, traditional village a lot of interesting buildings can be found, such as the 18th century two-roomed, arched olive oil press, the temples of Panagia and Agios Sergios, the old school and many residences. Visitors can also find the unique folklore museum of the prefecture of Chania, organised by the Ministry of Culture, filled with a wealth of displays of folk life. The landscape around the village still has its natural beauty. Plenty of opportunities for walks are provided around the group of Venetian wells, the Roman cemetery, the neighbourhood and the church of Agios Pavlos. With the charm of a traditional Cretan village, a 24hour health centre on its periphery, supermarket, bakery and a good Taverna combined this with interesting attractions and the close proximity to the blue flag beach at Almyrida, where you can enjoy many activities including wind surfing and small boat trips to local caves. There are an abundance of tavernas and cafinions, making this area the perfect place for holidays.

Also 1.5km in the opposite direction is the village of Vamos, a charming traditional village set in the countryside, in the beautiful rolling foothills of the White Mountains and only a short distance from the northern Cretan sea, with panoramic country views. It is a village untouched by time where small white washed cobbled streets and the old donkey tracks lead to hidden tavernas, where the locals are friendly and welcoming. Located with links to the main roads and airport and offering a post office, banking facilities and an array of local shops including a supermarket, Vamos is a desirable country village popular with those looking to dip in and experience cretan life among locals.
