The Valenciana region
Located between Gata de Gorgos and Pedreguer, this development Gata Residencial, has recently been completed. Roads, access, infrastructure are all in place! Both towns are typically Spanish, with market days, very inexpensive local restaurants, fiestas, intimate narrow streets flanked by townhouses etc. From Alicante in the south to Denia in the north, the Costa Blanca (North) enjoys a spectacular coastline. Rising cliffs, rocky inlets, pretty coves and beautiful sandy beaches. Spain is the most mountainous country in Europe.
The Costa Blanca enjoys a wonderful climate, being fairly hot in summer but not very cold in winter.
If you want to explore the region, why not drive to Guadalest? Go inland to the Jalón Valley (sample the wine but not too much of it!), travel along the coast to Altea, visit Terra Mitica in Benidorm with the children! Take them to Aqualandia (water park!) and Mundomar too and enjoy the dolphins! Terra Natura (Benidorm), and Aitana Safari Park (off motorway at Villajoyosa) are also a must!!
Alicante airport is 80km drive and Valencia 90km. The infrastructure in coastal Spain is now so sophisticated, travelling is a joy rather than a penance!! Empty motorways and few traffic jams!!
Gata De Gorgos
There are approximately 5,000 inhabitants of Gata de Gorgos, and the town is situated 80m above sea level. The N332 goes straight through the town (Avenida Marina Alta), but off this road are the narrow village streets with townhouses, restaurants, shops, banks, bars, chemists etc!
Places of interest:-the church in the central square (St. Miguel Arcangel), the archaelogical museum, prehistoric cave paintings in Los Coves Roges and the guitar factory.
The local gastronomy! This principally consists of rice dishes such as paella, or arroz al horno (baked rice with sea food) but also includes salads, meats cooked on the griddle or bbq, chicken in almonds, sword fish with garlic, prawns in even more garlic etc!!
Important local produce include Moscatel wine from Gata's own vineyards, almonds grown in nearly fields, and olive oil. The latter is prepared in the Gata Co-Operativa! You can pick own (in bulk) and let the olive press do the rest!!
Fiestas:-July 29th to August 6th fiestas dedicated to Santísimo Cristo del Calvario.
January 17th the fiesta marking the "blessing of the animals"
September 29th fiesta of San Miguel Arcángel.
June 23-24 fiesta in honour of San Juan.
Local fiestas in Javea celebrating the Moors and Christians (in mid-July). Similar celebrations in Moraira July 18th.
Art and local specialities:-ceramics, cane furniture, musical instruments (guitars!)
The surrounding area is overflowing with vineyards, orange/lemon orchards, almond/olive groves. Throughout the year, the vegetation remains green and lush! There are miles & miles of tracks for ambling, cycling, jogging, or riding without meeting an asphalt road!
For sun worshipers/swimmers there are beaches in Javea, Moraira, Denia, Calpe, Benidorm
The shoppers should visit the new Shopping Mall in Ondara (close to Denia) with a loads to choose from including ten pin bowling, cinemas, restaurants etc. For the horse lovers there is the Ondara Riding School, near Pedreguer.
