Location description from owner

The Madeira Islands region

Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's "Jewel in the Atlantic". The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, crisscrossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length. Walkers of all ages and abilities can take in some of the finest countryside, surrounded by colourful foliage and spectacular views.
Madeira’s greatest attraction has to be the subtropical climate, sometimes known as “the island of eternal spring”. Even in winter the temperature rarely falls below 17C, and rarely exceeds 23C in high summer.Garajau has an excellent bus service to and from Funchal as well as to the next viallage Canico and its costal resort of Canico de Baixo. The beach at Garajau has been recently restored with access by road or cable lift.
The landscape is covered in a green mantle of rich subtropical foliage. The variety and profusion of flowers makes the island a permanent flower show. Birds of Paradise, with their bright orange beak-like flowers, blossom in open fields. Fragrant hydrangeas line walking paths (levadas) that skirt the edge of mountain terraces.
The landscape and vegetation, coupled with the ever friendly Madeirans and the appetizing food, combine to ensure that Madeira is a place of immense appeal which draws one back again and again.

Garajau

Located on the sunny, dry, southern coast of Madeira, Garajau is situated, midway between the airport, and the capital, Funchal. Taxi journey time to both is just 12 minutes. Garajau has long been known to be one of Madeira’s high class residential areas and is named after the black-headed sea birds, terns, which nest in the cliffs.
Just below the town is a 200m high headland with a fine "miradouro" - a statue of Christ with outstretched arms, similar to the larger statues in Rio de Janeiro or Lisbon. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sun go down and it has great views west to the Bay of Funchal. The coastline here at Garajau is also a conservation area, and was one of Europe’s first underwater nature reserves, providing sanctuary for whales, dolphins and seals. The sea shore has now been updated and opened up with a new cable lift to take visitors down onto the beach and a beachfront restaurant.
Garajau is also ideal as a location to start the many levada walks in Madeira.
Both Golf courses are within easy reach and the coastal area of Caniço de Baixo boasts three world renowned diving schools.
Garajau’s high street combines the Hotel Dom Pedro Garajau on one side of the road and a multitude of shops, bakeries, coffee shop, ice cream parlous and a few patisseries, and a medium sized well stocked mini-markets with ATM outside, a bank [ Barclays] and several restaurants, bars and apartments on the other. Our apartment is on the next street round the corner from all these amenities.

“Maderia”

Reviewed 20 May 2017

Our apartment in Garajua was brilliant. It was fitted out with everything that we could possibly need from washing machine to a bottle opener. The beds were very comfortable and the apartment was very clean. All in all we had a brilliant holiday in Madeira with excellent accommodation.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for your very positive review and for taking the time to write it. I am delighted that you enjoyed your holiday. Connie G. Penn

“Spacious apartment in a quiet residential area”

Reviewed 8 Nov 2016

This was our first visit to Madeira and we were not disappointed. The apartment was large and comfortable. The balcony was huge and very private although the November weather did not allow us to make best use of it. There was parking space for a car if you required it and a lift to the apartment on the 5th floor. There were two good mini markets and an excellent bakers about a 5 minute walk away and a good variety of eating places too. The bus stop was right outside the building and it took 15 minutes into Funchal. We picked up a timetable from the tourist office in Funchal which was useful. The taxi service from the airport was much appreciated although we did think 25euros was rather overpriced for a 15minute journey. We would definitely recommend eating in A Cetntral in Canico as long as you are not vegetarian. The meat kebabs were fantastic and the waiting staff were friendly and efficient.

Owner's reply: Thank you for the review. Your positive comments are appreciated. The price for the taxi is not just based on the length the journey, but also on the service, key transfer and familiarisation with the apartment, done on my behalf. Connie G. Penn

“Great holiday in a lovely apartment”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2016

The apartment was just as shown on the web site. Wonderful views over the Atlantic and a great terrace to relax on. The apartment is very well furnished with everything you need. The lady who cleans the apartment does an excellent job and was very friendly and helpful.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much Susan for you review. I am very pleased that you liked the apartment. The views are indeed spectacular and was one of the main reasons we bought the apartment in 2000. It was bought as our future home in Madeira so is furnished as a home rather than just a holiday apartment.
