An antidote to the hectic daily routine, but home a from home with all of the modern creature comforts you might need. Whether you want to curl up and enjoy the ambience of our sympathetically restored Grade II listed building, or step out and use the Church as a base to enjoy the craggy hills and valleys of the North Pennines or the North Lakes, Old St. John's Church is the perfect hideaway.
The Church underwent a complete restoration and conversion from Church to home, and has been featured on Channel 4's - Restoration Man.
We request that no ball games are played in the garden as the Church has many beautiful leaded and stained glass windows.
Please do not climb on the dry stone wall boundaries.
We request that dogs are only allowed downstairs and not on the furniture, and that the garden is left as found.

The church sleeps 8 people comfortably. There are two kingsize rooms, both en-suite, one being located in the spire. One twin room that can alternatively be arranged as a superking, also en-suite and a further double bedroom located on the ground floor with a shower room opposite.
The kitchen is located in the curved end of the Church with a magnificent curved worktop; it is very well equipped and now even includes a Bosch Tassimo coffee machine (if you want to bring your own coffee pods).
The fireplace, located in the spacious living area, is double sided. Opposite the dining area there is a comfortable 'snug' - the former vestry.

We were two families of 4 with small children. This was a great place to stay. Lots of room for playing and lots to do within a half hour drive.

“A beautiful place”
We stayed here as our daughter was getting married close by. It really is a beautiful place, tastefully decorated and a joy to stay in. Would make a great Christmas retreat as you relax by the fire and open presents. Thanks Phil and Hanah we loved our stay.

Had the most amazing few days away at St. John’s with family and friends, and all I can say is WOW!!! The minute you drive up to the church the wow factor starts! This continues all throughout the building. A real home from home with everything you could imagine you would need!!! We visited a few places near by and the local The Shephards inn where the food was beautiful! Phil was quick at returning any questions we had and I will 100% be recommending this to all of my friends.

What a wonderful 5 days we had at St John's Church. It's a fantastic property, with plenty of room for all 7 of us, with one of the rooms downstairs being able to convert into a double room. There is a small area to sit outside and enjoy the garden. There is also lovely food available at 'The Shepherd's Inn' just 5 minutes drive, or I'm sure you could walk. The community in Gamblesby are very welcoming .. and a lady we bumped into invited us to join their coffee morning at the local church! Phil the owner is very organized and responsive. Thanks so much... what wonderful memories we will always have of our stay!

“Fantastic Holiday Home”
We stayed at St Johns Church last week and there is only one word to describe it -Wow! Absolutely massive, inside and out. Immacculate and tastefully decorated and comfortable furniture. The Church was stocked with everything you need for a home from home holiday. Gamblesby is a pretty and quiet village with stunning views especially from the church tower. The children loved the horses and cow in the neighbours garden next door and our dog was in her element in the huge wrap around garden. Overall I would totally recommend and return. Dealing with the owners was easy and quick too.

“Beautiful place to stay”
We stayed at st johns for 3 nights with two children. It is a special place to stay. It was easy to find and we found lots of places to visit in short driving distances. The village lovely too. The church is well equipped with everything you could need. We loved the log burner and the owner was very quick to organise a delivery of logs when we were running low...our son loved watching them be delivered too. There are farms on either side, which our children aged 5 and 2 enjoyed watching the tractors and farmers at work. Lots of outdoor space for children to run around. The bedrooms were all very comfortable. We had a great time here and could not find any faults, we would highly recommend. Excellent communication from the owners.

We had an amazing time staying in the converted church. I booked this for my husbands 50th i only came across it by chance on the website, i knew he would love a property with lots of character it didn't disappoint, we watched Channel 4's restoration man before we went, we found it interesting finding out the history. The weekend we chose was perfect it was like a Spring weekend which was not expected due to the amount of snow in recent weeks.There was plenty of space for everybody we all loved it . The bedrooms were very spacious with high ceilings beautifully decorated loved the chandeliers in each room. We chose the master bedroom smaller but quirky with lovely window and seating and sunken bath. We had to venture up into the spire you could see for miles although we were a bit shocked when we pulled the stairs down to find all the fly's that came out, Henry did the trick hoovering them up. The church was surprisingly warm never felt the cold once we didn't need to use the log burner which was ashame! we didn't venture out much because you really need to drive to places nothing in a short walking distance. We did have little walks round the village as the weather did not let us down we got plenty of sun and we drove into Alston which was about 10 km away there were quite a few pubs there and some small shops with a Spar and a Coop. On the way we stopped to visit the Hartside Cafe but unfortunately there was an incident early March causing the place to burn down such ashame, people were still parking up to take in the views as the Cafe was very high up, i hope it can be rebuilt. There are a couple of villages nearer with the odd pub & bakery, convenience store. We took with us all the supplies we needed plenty to eat & drink. We definately would recommend this property it is so different to anywhere we have stayed before it made for a very special weekend it was sad to leave. Had plenty of comments asking about the place on facebook with all the photos we took. Some lovely memories to look back on. Hope we can return again sometime in the future.

“A Gem and a great place for a short break”
The 'church' is in the centre of the fabulous Eden Valley and is a hidden gem. The accommodation is of a very high standard and the decoration is tasteful and in keeping with the buildings history. Our visit was at the end of the worst snow storm for 40 years and the area was surrounded by deep snow. However, the building was warm and snug. On the day before our arrival, Phil (the owner) visited (a 4 hour return journey)and cleared an area in the grounds to enable us to park cars. Now that is customer service. Only high praise for a delightful property. Excellent.
The Vicarage is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures and is comfortable and well equipped the perfect place to relax after long walks in the countryside The outstanding scenery combined with an amazing place to stay and kind weather a perfect holiday. The only disappointment was that we had booked for 4 nights not a week. Hopefully we will be back
