The Midi-Pyrénées region

There are few places in France where people are so friendly, life so relaxed and the scenery so stunning. The beauty is year round with snow on the mountains from November to late May and long warm summers. Easter marks the opening of sites of touristic interest and there is much to see whatever your interests. The Pyrenees form a vast wilderness of great natural beauty with trails suitable for walkers of all abilities. They are a haven for wildlife with beautiful indigenous plants and wild flowers. Red kites, eagles, griffon vultures and lammergeier soar the skies, whilst the mountain slopes are home to marmot, izard, wild boar and even the occasional bear. Criss-crossed by tiny mountain streams and dotted with lakes they afford hours of endless pleasure. A major attraction in the area is Lourdes with its wonderful Basilica, visited by millions of pilgrims every year. The Cirque de Gavarnie, a little further into the mountains, forms a natural barrier between France and Spain and is a Unesco Heritage site with Europe's longest waterfall. Nearby is Pont d'Espagne with its tumbling cascades, lake and beautiful valleys. The pretty ski resort of St. Lary is also worth a visit and popular with children. There are grottoes, cable cars and mountain railways; ski-ing, snow-shoeing and husky sledding in winter; rock climbing, fishing, white water rafting, canyoning, tennis, para-gliding, horse riding and children's adventure parks in summer. The Pyrenees are a cyclist's paradise and the Tour de France passes close by every July on its gruelling journey over the nearby mountain passes. There are many fine golf courses in the area, with the oldest in mainland Europe at Pau and the most beautiful at Bagneres de Bigorre. The closest is a superb 18 hole, par 70 flat course in Lannemezan which has an excellent restaurant.

For the less active or more culturally minded, historic Pau is an enchanting town with fine architecture, a beautiful castle and wonderful shopping. The Atlantic coast has superb beaches and elegant towns like St. Sebastian, and Biarritz which has been a long time favourite with european nobility and is a surfer's paradise. Close by is the lovely fishing port of St.Jean de Luz with its fine restaurants, lively cafes and yachting harbour.

Closer to home, the lovely medieval hilltop villages of St. Bertrand de Comminges and Mauvezin with their cathedral and castle are both worth a visit and are host to a variety of concerts and festivals throughout the summer. Toulouse, and Carcassonne with its perfectly preserved medieval castle and old town are easily visited in a day. North, lies Marciac with its beautiful town square and lovely restaurants. It is home each August to the internationally acclaimed Jazz Festival when music pours from every cafe, colourful stalls spill over the pavements and the town is alive with visitors. Mirande, nearby, is equally famous for its Country and Western Festival in July which attracts celebrities from as far away as the United States. For those who enjoy the arts, there is a silent film festival at nearby Aneres during Spring.

Whatever your interests, we are sure you will enjoy all that the Hautes Pyrenees has to offer along with the comfort and ambience of our lovely home.

Lannemezan is a small market town and gateway to the Pyrenees. It has a colourful market on Wednesday mornings and plenty of cafes and reasonably priced restaurants. A three to four course lunch can cost as little as 12 euros with wine; local specialities are duck, foie gras, cassoulet and brebis cheese, washed down with a glass of madiran or jurancon wine. It has all major amenities including supermarkets, banks, chemists, a variety of shops, cinema, golf course, hospital and children's park with boating lake. Shops are open from 9am-12 noon and 2pm to 7pm. Most are closed on Sundays and Monday mornings. If you enjoy markets, the lovely spa town of Bagneres de Bigorre with its Saturday market, casino and elegant swimming complex Aquensis, is only 35 minutes away, and reached by one of the most beautiful drives in the region. Spain is a 50 minute drive and good for a tapas lunch and shopping if you wish to stock up on drinks and cigarettes; prices are cheaper over the border.

Galan itself is a bastide village dating from the middle ages. It expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries so has a diverse mixture of architecture. It sits on a crest between two valleys, overlooking the Pyrenees. Only two minutes from the house, it has all the basic amenities including a boulangerie, tabac, chemist, post office, cash point, small supermarket and a cafe/bar. There is also a doctor and dentist. It lies just north of Lannemezan which is a 12 minute drive by car.
