The Tuscany region

The Tuscany region is renown for the vestige of the renaissance, which has left intact amazing examples of art and architecture in many cities as well as small villages and hamlets. And of course, for its fantastic wine, olive oil, and food produces such as the cured meat, cheeses, the famous “Chianina Steak”, and the cuisine in general which ranges from top class dishes to the more traditional and most loved “cucina povera”, that does not mean as the literal translation of “poor kitchen” suggests, but rather the frugal way of cooking with fresh and local produces.

Siena, 20 minutes drive from the apartment, is probably Italy's loveliest medieval city, a trip definitely worth making if you are anywhere in Tuscany. Siena historic centre, one of Unesco's World Heritage sites, has maintained unaltered its medieval architecture throughout and will transport you into a fascinating world steeped in art and history, starting from the magnificent Duomo.

Siena's heart is the central square known as “Piazza Il Campo”, renown throughout the world for its famous Palio, a traditional festival culminating in a bare back horse race that takes place in the square itself twice a year in summer (some of you might have seen it in the James Bond movie, “Quantum of Solace”). The city is great for both adults and children because of its charm and restricted traffic in the centre, and you can find museums, monuments, art galleries, an infinity of excellent bars and restaurants serving foods and wine that are just divine to the palate, not to mention the shops and boutiques for of leather clothing items, shoes, hand bags, you name it!

And then Florence, the historic rival of Siena, is about 45 minutes drive from the apartment. Florence is a fascinating city for its splendour of the Renaissance heritage, and its historic centre is just one of the two selected Unesco's World Heritage sites in this city, together with the Medici Villas and Gardens. Not to be missed are the Duomo Square with the Cathedral of “Santa Maria del Fiore” and the adjacent Battistero. For those more daring a climb up the “Campanile di Giotto”, from where you can enjoy a 360° majestic view of the entire city, while standing on an iron grate floor staring into the depth of the almost 100 meters height of the tower! Then the Uffizi Gallery, The “Piazza della Signoria”, and of course, the emblem of Florentine craftsmanship, the Ponte Vecchio, with its centuries old jewellery shops.

On the way to Florence then you can stop at the fashion Outlets where you can find excellent shopping opportunities for all the top Italian stylists like Ferragamo, Gucci, Versace, Dolce e Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, and may more.

Gaiole in Chianti

Gaiole in Chianti is an idyllic location set in the famous “Golde Triangle” of the Chianti Classico wine area, together with the villages of Radda in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, all in the province of Siena. Here the rolling hills nurture the most prestigious vineyards producing some of the most renowned Chianti wines, many of which are among the “Super Tuscan” wines, and history dates back the wine production here to 2.000 years, since the Etruscan time. Along the vineyards the olive groves fill in the scenery with their distinctive dark green leaves and low trees, source or of the renowned olive oil which is widely used to prepare local specialities such as the “bruschetta” (pronounced brusketta!).

The key feature of Borgo di Gaiole is that from its panoramic position overlooking the village of Gaiole, it is only two minutes walk from the village itself allowing you to fully enjoy its characteristic Tuscan lifestyle right at your doorstep. It is an enviable asset in so far that you do not need to use your car, as a matter of fact you could easily enjoy your holiday in Gaiole in chianti and have a great time. The main square will offer you a choice between bars for a breakfast of pastry and cappuccino, or a wonderful lunch at “Lo Spicchio” restaurant which serves some fantastic home made pasta dishes and an excellent wine selection. Since Gaiole hosts a residential community, you can find all amenities necessary for your stay, grocery stores, butcher, chemist, banks, post office, and much more. For the family there is a kid playground, tennis court and football pitch. In the summer months Gaiole comes alive with local festival in the evening and into the night, with music, games, wine tasting, and every year there are some new ones.

One of the main attraction of recent year is the “Eroica” bike race taking place the first week in October, which by now hosts hundreds of cyclist from all over the world for this hard and fun ride on the white roads of the Chianti, crossing incredible and untouched sceneries.

The surrounding country side is indeed a paradise for cycling and walking, with lots of path off the beaten road to discover. There are many castles and hamlets within a short drive where to visit winery, taste and purchase wine, olive oil, and cheeses. And then horse riding, hot air balloon sightseeing, and why not, great cooking classed right at your house, where Tuscan chef will prepare with you an unforgettable typical dinner for you to enjoy with family and friends.

Please feel free to enquire with us and we will be able to supply you with useful links and tips of things to see, do and eat around Gaiole in Chianti
