The amazing city of Siena is 30 minutes drive approximately from Gaiole. It hosts The Palio horse race in the Piazza del Campo twice a year in July and August, see link http://www.ilpalio.org/palioenglish.htm. For further information on Siena and things to do there we suggest you check out the following link: http://www.aboutsiena.com/index.html

The amazing city of Florence (Firenze) is about a 1 hour drive approximately from Gaiole. It has been said that Florence has been unfairly overblessed with art, culture and history. It was the Cradle of the Renaissance and home of the likes of Niccolo Machiavelli, Michalangelo and the Medici family. The Palazzo degli Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio and Piazza del Duomo are amongst a few of the city's amazing sites. Firenze is truly an amazing city.

Siena and Florence would be “must sees” on any visit to the area and there is a saying which goes as follows “Siena by day, Florence by night”.

Gaiole in Chianti

Gaiole in Chianti is in the Commune of Gaiole, in the Province of Siena. Gaiole has been described as the most idylic place in Europe to live see link http://www.forbes.com/2008/11/18/europe-homes-dollar-forbeslife-cx_po_1118realestate.html Gaiole is historically one of the capitals of the Chianti League, the others being Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti. The Borgo is modelled on the nearby medieval village of Vertine. The Chianti region is famous for its amazing landscape of vineyards and olive groves and the world renowned olive oil and wine. The Borgo is in the heart of the Chianti Classico region which is home to some of Italy's best wineries and food producers. The area prides itself on its traditional cuisine which is loved all over the world. A number of medieval castles which produce their own wine, such as Castello di Brolio see link http://www.ricasoli.it/ and Castelo Meleto see link http://www.castellomeleto.com/default.htm are within 10-15 minutes drive or varying walking times of Gaiole. Most of the wineries and olive farms sell their produce direct to the public and very often provide tours and free wine tasting.Within a few minutes walk of the apartment there is Castello di Spaltenna, see link http://www.spaltenna.it/english/home.html ,a converted monastery which is now 5 star hotel, the ideal place for a treat lunch or evening meal.

Gaiole is a working village which has all the amenities needed for anyone staying there – you could spend your whole holiday in Gaiole without leaving it. There are a number of restaurants in the village, a pizza takeaway together with a couple of bars and cafes. There is a childrens play area/park, tennis courts and football pitch. There is a tourist information office in the village which is a great place to find out all that is happening in the area. In the summer months there is a full range of activities in the evening time in the centre of the village such as wine tasting and musical performances.

Reviewed 24 Apr 2013

Stayed here for a lovely, idyllic, December week. Amazing apartment with all home comforts. Loved walking through the village, stopping for pizza and fine wines :-) The views over the hills and vineyards are incredibly inspiring and a joy to wake up to! Day trip to Siena is a must! Great place to stay, will most definitely be back! Thanks!

Owner's reply: So glad you enjoyed your stay.
