The Tuscany region
Gaiole is in Siena Province only a 30 min drive from the historic city famous for it's Duomo, Campo and of course it's Palio, run twice a year in July and August.
Steeped in history, the regions characteristics are fashioned out of the centuries of Sienese-Florentine wars with hilltop castles and fortified villages scattered across the landscape, now providing the perfect backdrop for wine tasting, olive oil sampling and gastronomic tours.
For the more archaelogically minded there are Etruscan settlement sites to explore and the excellent Etruscan museums in Siena and Volterra to visit.
Florence is about 1.25 hrs away by car and just half an hour by train from nearby Montevarchi and makes for a comfortable day trip. It needs no introduction being one of the worlds finest cultural centres offering all year round opportunities to visit great galleries and 'palazzi'.
If that's not enough, try your hand at a cooking course and learn the secrets of Tuscan cuisine in nearby Lecchi or Coltibuono; or explore Gaiole 's sister Chianti League towns of Radda, Greve and Castallina; or venture a little further afield to the antique markets of Arezzo or the ancient towers of San Gimignano; or for 'Twilight' fans maybe a trip to the home of the Volturi in Volterra.
Gaiole in Chianti
There are over 100 wine producers in Gaiole commune alone forming the backbone of the local economy, ranging from the renowned Castello d'Ama and Castello di Brolio through to many small family vineyards.
A trading centre for local business, Gaiole offers five restaurants, three cafe bars, a pub, two delicatessens, a great value take away pizzaria, a tourist office, pharmacy, ATMs and local shopping caterering for all local delicacies and holiday needs.
Famous for it's cycling festival, L'Eroica held every year during the first weekend in October, the village also hosts frequent concerts and produce festivals throughout the year.
It is an excellent centre for walking and cycling (try some of the L'Eroica route yourselves with our free to use cycles); the Siena-Florence long distance footpath runs along the ridge above the village, and walking notes are provided for a number of circular routes around Gaiole. There is a maze of waymarked 'strada bianchi' (unsurfaced roads) criss-crossing the surrounding hills and valleys just waiting to be explored.
If you are not that energetic, Gaiole is the local base for 'Tuscan Scooter Rental' where you can hire a bright red Vespa on a daily basis! Check out www.tuscanyscooterrental.com
Vineyards and olive groves abound, amongst which sit the majestic Florintine castles of Meleto, Brolio and others. from the atmospheric ruins of of Castello di Montegrossi perched high above the village, you can look down on your accomodation and wonder at the magic of Chianti.

"Perfect and plaisant location to explore Tuscany"
We were 4 people staying in this very nice apartment : comfortable, clean, modern, well equipped. We loved the location. I never heard of Gaiole before, but it was a nice discovery. Quiet village, but big enough to go out for drink, lunch or dinner or buy some food. Very friendly place and very good location to visit the most important cities around : San Gimigniano, Sienna, Arezzo, Firenze. Good recommendations also in the apartment for hikes around Gaiole. Very lovely villages in this area. We had the most enjoyable time, despite the weather which was not perfect. The swimming pool has a good size also. I would love to go back.

"Ideal place for family get together at Christmas."
Apartment ideally situated for small town of Gaiole. There is a steep climb up to the apartment and it is up a flight of stairs. Very well equipped kitchen. Apartment finished to a high quality. Well situated for Chianti region.

"Home from Home in relaxed location"
A great place to stay. Clean, spacious and a real home-from-home, comfortably furnished and well located. Gaioli is a typical Chianti village away from the tourist hype, but well-located for touring. Propery has a good pool on communal terrace, and is set in a small development styled on a typical old-style Italian village. Very relaxing, and scope to eat outside in private garden. Would certainly return when next have the opportunity.

"Perfect Tuscan Getaway!"
I stayed here in June for a week with my partner and 4 other friends plus a baby. The entire week was perfect. We hired a car at Pisa and took the 'scenic' route from the airport to 'il borgo' which took us over the the beautiful Tuscan countryside and vineyards. When we arrived at the apartment the place was spotless, all the rooms were made up and we had everything we could possibly need, including a cot for the baby. The apartment was a great size, more than sufficient for all of us including a courtyard plus a gorgeous garden complete with a BBQ. Gaolie was a great place to be based with lots to do in the town itself including some fabulous walks and numerous restaurants, and within easy reach of some great destinations such as Florence, Siena and St Gimignano (boasting the best ice cream in the world). All in all a perfect week and can't wait to get back there next year!

"We felt part of a Tuscan village"
The Borgo di Gaoile in the Chianti region of Tuscany is a modern complex of apartments sympathetically set in a hillside adjacent to the town. The complex is, if not luxurious, then very well appointed with well designed and appointed flats containing varying numbers of bedrooms - ours had three (we were with friends). There was a swimming pool, which my wife liked, and I did a few workouts at the small but adequately equipped gym. The walk into town was about 5 - 10 minutes, where there were local shops, bars and restaurants; my wife and I felt very much part of the local culture and certainly the town's people were very friendly and hospitable. I won't go on any more, but just to say we found it a good location to explore the beautiful Tuscan region and taste the regional wine and food. Ciao!
