Located between the city's commercial centre (old town) and the Lido's tourist area, the apartment is a short walking distance to the marina, harbour and sea front "promenade" and it also has an easy access to the main roads of the island and, therefore, an excellent capability as a base to discover the whole island.

The Madeira Islands region
DISCOVER MADEIRA ISLAND BY VIDEO AT:
Known as the Pearl of the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira Island is a floating garden located 500 Km off the African coast and approximately 1000 Km from the European Continent, this archipelago is formed by the islands of Madeira (741 Km2 - 57 Km long by 22 Km wide), Porto Santo (42,17 Km2), Desertas and Selvagens, these last two uninhabited.
The climate is mild all over the year, with Summer temperatures between 25º/28º during the day and between 21º/24º at night. During the Winter, day temperatures change between 18º/21º and at night, between 13º/16º.
Due to the influence of the hot Golf Stream, sea water temperature is around 22º C in the Summer, gradually cooling to 18º C by late Winter.
The population of Madeira Island is about 245.000 inhabitants, and in Porto Santo is about 4500.
To visit all the interesting places in Madeira you need, at least, two weeks, but if you only have one week to stay, let us give you a few worth mentioning informations, not to miss these places:
- The highest peaks of Madeira - Pico Ruivo (1.862 m), Pico das Torres (1.851 m) and Pico do Areeiro (1.818 m).
- Camacha, about 20 minutes driving from Funchal, to appreciate the centre of the Wicker industry, with a large variety of products, in size and shape. A good place to buy some gifts.
- Santana's typical thatched triangular houses, one of the symbols of Madeira. I also recommend a visit to the Madeira Thematic Park, dedicated to the history and culture of Madeira.
Only a short distance from Santana you will find Queimadas, the starting point for one of Madeira´s most spectacular "levada walks" towards "Caldeirão Verde" (the green cauldron). Reserve half a day for a walk.
- The various footpaths along more than 200 "levadas" (1400 Km of water irrigation canals) allow healthy walks in the interior of the island and are also a must for nature lovers, that will lead you to the Laurissilva forest, classed as World Natural Heritage by UNESCO.
- The belvedere of Eira do Serrado, which has a magnificent view over Curral das Freiras village, located in a deep valley. A truly fantastic breathtaking scene!
- Cabo Girão, the highest promontory in Europe and the second highest in the world.
- Not far away, the Calheta village's sugar cane mill, one of the three sugar cane mills still working in Madeira. There you are invited to savour the traditional molasses cake (honey cake), accompanied by a "poncha" (the most famous Madeira's liquor).
- If you have never visited a volcanism centre, you have this opportunity visiting São Vicente´s famous volcanic caves.
- Last but not least, if you still have the time, go to the other populated island of the archipelago - Porto Santo - and spend a whole day there. The maritime connection is made from Funchal port by "Lobo Marinho" ferry, which makes the journey between the two islands in about two hours and a half.
This island is known for its magnificent 9 km stretch of beach, with fine yellow sand of therapeutic properties.
Madeira's economic activities at present are the tourism, which is the major economic sector, added to the famous Madeira Wine production, the island's colourful flowers and fine traditional handy craft and craft work (embroideries and wicker works).
Therefore, the wine cellars and embroidery factories, at the centre of Funchal, are a must.
Cultural and environmental factors have made walking or hiking one of Madeira's most traditional and popular open air activities.
If you like active holidays, very close to the apartment you have a tourist office, offering the opportunity of booking all kind of programmes and tours you can choose, such as trekking, climbing, canyoning, Jeep safaris, mountain bike or horse riding.
As far as water sports are concerned, you can choose big game fishing, whale & dolphin watching, sailing, windsurf, surf, canoeing, water ski and swimming.
If you would like to see the Madeiran coast from a different angle and enjoy some fresh sea air at the same time, go on a trip on a replica of Cristovão Colombo ship, departing from the port of Funchal.
In the old town of Funchal, don't miss the Madeira Story Centre, a cultural centre of historical accuracy linked to multimedia technology and interactivity, presents a complete overview of Madeiran history, in a 90 minute tour.
Taking the cable car, nearby the market, you must visit the parish of Monte and once there the Quinta Monte Palace, before going also to visit the Botanical Garden, with more than 2000 exotic plants from all over the World. Beside this, the tour presents marvellous panoramas over the bay and the valleys of Funchal.
Returning from Monte, try one of the oldest traditional means of transportation - the typical Monte toboggans (wicker baskets / sledges), for a remarkable 2 Km trip down to Funchal, in about 10 minutes.
The touristic Lido bathing complex - 15 minutes walking from home - is one of the best in the island, for it has its sea water swimming-pools and direct access to the sea.
For those who prefer golf, there is an excellent 18-hole, par 72 course, designed by Cabell Robinson in the municipality, less than 15 minutes away from the apartment, by car, named Palheiro Ferreiro, with a stunning view over the amphitheatre of Funchal.

“Wonderfull apartment - well equiped - close to every thing”
We found that the apartment had all that we needed and was close to the action. Madeira is an amazing beautiful island, and we hope to return.
“Quiet, well equipped ground floor Funchal apartment close to buses and amenities”
Used owner's advised taxi from airport, but airport bus back (stop 200m). All as advertised. Great having both bath and shower after long levada hikes! Well placed for various buses and concert hall. Excellent value and even included the cleaner halfway through our 12 night stay.
“wow-cozy place to stay”
It was my second trip to Madeira and first i chose an appartment to rent. Personally to me, Madeira is my personal paradise. And the choice of Quinta Castelo Branco in Funchal as the place of stay was the best choice of place. Great thank and respect to its owners who care of their guests as if we, guests, are the best friends of theirs. Everything that i could think of as to have at the place if i was my personal flat with all my desires with regard to the location, design, equipment and essential neccessities were predicted and fulfilled...up to any kind of glasses and plates for any kind of dishes i could think to prepare...to all sorts of coffee choice that i would think of drinking in the morning with the help of nespresso machine...tv, dishwasher, washing machine, with cleaning devices, with detergents in place, with everything for ironing, fully equipped kitchen with the set of spices, oils, sugars, coffees...up to numbers of telephones at the fridge door that you can need if you think of electrician, medical help, and everyhting that you, i am sure, you would like to have at your own home by your hand, in Quinta Castelo Branco are present. Aha, and the parking lot available also-) ... And the flashes of the history of Madeira available also...marvelous pictures of old Madeira on the walls...They are really great! The location is superb as well. 4 minutes to the market, 3-8 minutes walk to restaurants (regarding the kind of restaurant and cousine you are looking for), and city center. 5 minutes walk to the Madeira Governor's garden with gorgeous views to the ocean...and cruise liners-)...as well as places for the tourist to visit...depending upon your needs...and 0 minutes walk to the small garden where the house is located...you need just open the windows and doors from either sleeping room or leaving room and here they are...small and big samples of Madeira flora-) The maps and overview of locations to visit also are kindly offered by Amalia and Fernando (the owners of the appartment)...Yes, they think for us even about this...Moreover, Amalia gives me the best tourist guide what and when to visit at Madeira proceeding from the time i stayed on the island. With working hours of the sightseeing and touristic agencies...So much thinking beforehead... Every woman wants her thoughts be read sometimes-) and someplace-) I was impressed! Even now, two years after, I think that Quinta Castelo Branca is great appartment to rent and great example of true hospitality from its owners! Thank you, Amalia! Thank you Fernando! PS I forget to mention that Amalia also help me with meeting at the airport and transfering to her cozy apartment! Do you think it's not touchty? I think it was breathtaking!
