Location description from owner

The Madeira Islands region

Car: not necessary

Flat market is located in the historical center of Funchal, a 15-minute drive from the airport. 'Old Town' is the oldest district of the city and now the most popular tourist destination for residents and visitors. It is the hottest place in town, the main access point in Funchal.

With streets lined with traditional buildings (some dating from the 15th century), it is full of life, culture and spirit, with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants (and for visitors, some of the best restaurants in town).

Funchal

Suggestions (walking in minutes)

• Restaurants: For fish, "Hawk New" (best restaurant in town), "Marisa" and "Jango". For meat, "Taberna da Esquina". For rice "Laughter". Other popular restaurants: "The Fort," "The salt warehouse", "Sabor a Fado", "The Tapassol". They less than 10/05 minutes.

• Sweets: "Penha d 'Eagle" (2 minutes): sample delicious "cheesecake" and "pastel de nata".

• Bars: "Dusted Barreirinha" (10 minutes): for a drink before dinner with sunset views. "Old Sale" and "Groceries Poncha" drink the most famous drink Madeira, Poncha. Do not miss: those with passion fruit and tangerine.

• Beach "Barreirinha" (10 minutes): A public beach with a solarium at sea level.

• "Relief Church" (10 minutes), also known as "The Greater Church of Santa Maria."

• Rua de Santa Maria (4 minutes) - Strolling through the narrow streets you can enjoy a taste of ancient culture that remains in this particular part of the city. Many of the old buildings still exist, some of which have been turned into restaurants and bars. In addition, there is a new attraction, the "Art of Open Doors", which is a public art program to transform the Old Town in an art gallery permanent outdoor, displaying more than 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the street doors of Santa Maria. This colorful design has helped to revitalize this town and make it more culturally significant for residents and visitors.

• Farmers market (3 minutes) - The Farmers Market is a must! It is one of the highlights that Madeira has to offer, where all the aromas, colors, flavors and traditions combine to enchant the visitors. Built in 1939, in a graceful combination of 'art deco' and the modernist style, the main entrance and interior are decorated with tile panels, produced in once famous ceramic factory in Lisbon. Here you will find the best products Island. Exotic fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and flowers in a picturesque setting. The flower sellers are dressed in the typical Madeiran colorful costume for added vibrancy to this magical place.

Inside, there are two floors and a large central courtyard where sellers engage in selling products of the day-to-day. You will still be able to do a little tasting before buying. (A popular exotic fruit flavor is a cross between a banana and passion fruit). On the back, you will find the fish market. Here you will see fresh fish (some are brought alive) all over Madeira. Well known is the black scabbard fish, with their enormous eyes, sharp teeth and body long eel-like. Taste, smell, bright colors, fun and tradition!

• Fort St. James (8 minutes) and the Contemporary Art Museum. The beautiful Fort St. James, which was used to protect the city of Funchal from possible intrusions is also in the old town. The fort has turrets and sentry boxes from the seventeenth century. The Museum of Contemporary Art, is a collection of Portuguese contemporary art from the 60s to the present day, with works by some of the most significant national artists.

• Madeira Story Centre (5 minutes) - A modern museum about the history and culture of Madeira. The Madeira Story Centre will take you on a journey through the major historical events in Madeira, from the volcanic formation for the days of Dom Henriques, the first landing of an air-sea plane, Napoleon and Churchill. It offers a hands-on interactive experience where you feel the environment of different periods of time.

• Cable car (6 minutes) - This is an interesting way to show Madeira delta hidden beauty of some of the wonderful landscapes of Madeira. The departure station is on the park Almirante Reis. You go up 560 meters (1 837 feet) over 3, 718 m (12,000 feet) in 15 minutes to the Mount, located near Monte Palace Tropical Garden, set in a charming setting.

Market Warehouse (2 minutes) - The New Old Market. A mix of traditional and contemporary, a place to experience flavors, urban culture and childhood memories. Includes Toy Museum with a collection of 20 000 pieces: dolls, toy soldiers, miniature cars, games, dating from the 19th century to the present date.

“Amazing stay in Marta´s house!”

Reviewed 11 Sep 2015

Me and my friends went to Madeira, and we have to say that we had a fantastic time. Martas Villa is a fantastic place to stay at. It is a very quiet location and yet very accessible to all shops restaurants and Funchal all about 10 to 15 minutes walk. Fantastic breath taking with amazing ocean and mountain view. The villa is very spacious and has everything you need. Nuno and Luís are very nice and helpful persons. Thank you very much Luís and Nuno we had a great time and we will definitely stay in your Villa again.
