Description

The Old Chapel is a cosy 2 bedroom cottage converted from an 1855 Baptist Chapel. It sits well back from the quiet road in a large garden shared with the owners who live next door.

The original front door opens onto a sitting room with a sofa and double sofa-bed, TV and DVD, internet, iPod dock and radio. Off the sitting room is the dining area which seats 4 and a well stocked kitchen with hob/oven, fridge/freezer, washer/drier, microwave, kettle, toaster, etc.

Upstairs there is a large double and small single bedroom and family bathroom with bath and shower attachment. The double bed has a feather duvet. We also have a travel cot and high chair if you need it. We also have extra folding dining chairs if you have guests.

The village of Fulbourn has several shops and pub/restaurants. It is within easy reach of the university town of Cambridge. Buses leave from outside the Old Chapel every 20 minutes taking you to the railway station, city center and Addenbrooke's

The land for the chapel was originally purchased for 10 shillings in July 1855 on behalf of “a society of Protestant Dissenters of Denomination of Particular Calvinist Baptists”. Though it hasn't been active as a place of worship for more than 40 years, there is still a handfull of gravestones from the 1860s in the wood behind the chapel. These add to the charm of the place and don't in any way detract from the welcoming feeling you get when you step inside. There is a large garden with orchard to enjoy relaxing outside. Barbecue and picnic essentials available for your use plus bikes for two adults and one teenager.

Further details

Key collection should be after 4pm and vacation of the property should be by 11am on the day of departure.

It is expected that the cottage is left in the state that it was found i.e. clean and tidy.

Further details indoors

The double sofa bed in the sitting room allows for another couple to stay if necessary, though we would not recommend anyone plans to stay on the sofa for a prolonged period!. There is also an extra single mattress in the little bedroom. This can suit two small children who can then share this room--however it is pretty small.

We now have a brand new central heating boiler to keep the Old Chapel cosy in winter and provide lashings of hot water. The bathroom has been newly refurbished with a brand new shower.

Location description from owner

The England region

Fulbourn lies on the edge of the Fens, an area of fertile land that stretches across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk and known for its amazing skyline. Every taste is catered for: from the beaches of Norfolk and Suffolk to historic cities of Cambridge and Ely; from shopping in London (only 48 minutes away by train from Cambridge) to racing at Newmarket; from sailing on the dykes of the Fens to stately homes, gardens and a castle or two.

Fulbourn

The village of Fulbourn is mentioned in the Doomsday book and still has many ancient buildings. The village centre is only a few minutes walk away and has good pubs (all serving food) and local shops. The butcher and greengrocer sell excellent local produce.

Cambridge University, only 5 miles away, is one of the oldest and most famous universities in the world. The city of Cambridge also has a good selection of shops and attractive parks and walks along the river Cam. Punting on the river is a traditional way to spend warm summer afternoons.

Cambridge is famous for its cycling and we provide 2 bicycles which you can use to travel to and around the city.

The Imperial War Museum and Duxford is a great day out where you can go round and even inside the aircraft.

A visit to the city of Ely with its distinctive cathedral, only 20 miles away (access by car or train), should be an essential part of your holiday.

Wimpole Hall, Wicken Fenn, Anglesey Abbey and Audley End all make easy day trips and the Gog Magog golf course is only 2 miles away. You can also sample locally grown wine at Chilford Hall Vineyards.

The Norfolk coast is only 90 minutes away by car or train.

For people visiting relatives, then Addenbrooke's hospital is only 3 miles away and there is a direct bus route from outside the cottage.

“Extraordinary”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2012

What a beautiful property. We absolutely loved every minute of our stay - Denis and Ruth have got it off to a fine art. Charming furniture and quality towels and bed linens made for a very comfortable stay. We used The Old Chapel as base for my daughter's 18th birthday - perfectly located for Cambridge city centre, (the bus service is most efficient and cost-effective and literally, on the doorstep) and with the joy of being in a village location with all the local amenities you could possibly need. We availed ourselves of most of the local shops/hostelries as per our hosts' guide and were not disappointed. At the time of our stay there was no washing machine, but I believe one is being installed shortly, and the two tall men in our party struggled with the lack of a shower, (there is a huge bath with shower taps) but apart from these two minor niggles, it was faultless. Actually would I recommend this to a friend - not likely... they'll probably bag the weeks that I want next time !

“Lovely little cottage, perfect for our needs”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2012

Great little cottage on the outskirts of Cambridge. We only required one night stay (for a friend's wedding in the city) and were very pleased that the owners of this cottage were able to accomodate us. The property is very well furnished and would be a lovely place to stay for a longer period. There is no 'off road' parking, but parking on the street outside the gate was easy. The property was fantastic value at a similar rate to a family hotel room, but with so much more space makes it perfect for people with a young family.
