The Andalucia region
Fuengirola zoo (Bioparc) is possibly the best in Spain. Aqua Park a great days enjoyment open May – Sept.
Horse racing track about 2km outside of town, complete with go-cart track. Shopping centre with a go-cart track on roof and a multiplex cinema which usually has 2-3 screens showing English speaking films.
There are a number of parks with really good children's play areas and fitness machines for all ages.
Along the Fuengirola River near the castle is a newly developed area which has a basketball court, table tennis (yes outdoors) and a bike track with bikes for hire. There are pedalos (Swan shaped) to explore the river. There is also a skate park which is quite spectacular (covering all ages).
Tivoli World theme park in Benalmadena (about 15mins on train) is worth a visit and from this location you can take a cable car up the mountain, quite spectacular views over the motorway to a bird of prey sanctuary etc.
Bull fights: There is a bull ring beside the zoo, where numerous flights are staged at various dates throughout the year. This venue is also used for other activities particularly during the Mary Festival 's or Feria's, which the Spanish love. Lots of people will get dressed up in traditional Spanish outfits and they will parade around town on horseback or by carriage which makes for a wonderful spectacle.
Quad biking is available up the hills, they will come and collect you.
Parascending, is offered from Fuengirola Harbour, you will be taken along the coast line and given a breath-taking, unique view of Fuengirola from the sea. Jet-ski rental is also available.
Strolling along the paseo in the evenings particularly heading towards Los Boliches, can be a lovely experience, with a variety of street music / entertainers, and the spectacular sand artists, all bathed in the red glow of the setting sun.
Branching out from Fuengirola, if you want to explore further afield, there are numerous day trips to enjoy. You can explore exotic Tangier (Morocco), or you could take the train into Malaga and explore its magnificent Moorish Castle overlooking the port where all the cruise ships come and go. An awe inspiring Cathedral, old town area and the Picasso museum, endless old world streets with cafes and wine bars.
Torremolinos, just 15-20 minutes by bus / train, check out the area known as Carihuela, for its selection of beach bars / restaurants.
Ronda can be accessed by bus, car or tram from Malaga. This town is divided by a bridge spanning an amazing gorge, just stroll around this medieval town taking in the views or visit one of the various museums, especially the museum of torture (Ouch!).
Granada probably a two hour trip each way by car, is worth a visit for the impressive Alhambra palace if nothing else.
Gibraltar is definitely worth seeing, explore this old town; have your picture taken with the famous monkeys; stroll through the caves; take the cable car to the top; sun bathing at Europa point light house or a boat trip out to see the dolphins.
Mija is closer to home and is a 20 minute bus trip inland, to explore this beautiful rustic mountain village. A fantastic place to spend the day exploring its winding narrow laneways and flower bedecked streets. There is a lot to be seen here with some highlights including the bull ring, a beautiful old church and the botanical area on the cliff face overlooking Fuengirola in the distance. Take a donkey-taxi ride, or climb further up the hillside to the little stone church that looks the town (it's not as difficult a climb as it looks). Alternately you could simply buy some freshly made churros from a street vendor and allow yourself a glass or two of sangria. Don't eat too much though because the best is yet to come; when the sunset is close at hand and you are thinking of your evening meal seek out the Alcazaba restaurant, it's a little bit difficult to find but don't give up, a table with a view overlooking the coast is worth the effort.
If you want to find out more about any of the places or facilities mentioned, Fuengirola tourist office is located near the train station.
