Fowey is a picturesque, quaint, sailing port, well known for its sailing activities, myriad of interesting and stunning walks, and charming little streets adorned with interesting and very popular shops. Some of Cornwall’s most stunning beaches can be accessed directly from Fowey: Readymoney Cove, a lovely small sandy beach 10 minutes scenic walk from Fowey town centre and Whitehouse Beach located along the Esplanade, as well as the larger beach at Polkerris with café/pub and well known ‘Combers’ paradise’ that is Sams on the Beach restaurant (just a short drive by car or scenic coastal walk). With panoramic views over the river, Fowey is a hot spot for the avid or junior sailor with water based activities including kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving lessons and motor boat hire. Fowey is aided by two year-round ferries – the passenger ferry across the water to Polruan and the passenger/car ferry which takes you across to Bodinnick. Summer boat trips are available to Lostwithiel, Lerryn, Polperro, and the 14th Century fishing village of Mevagissey.

A haven for wildlife, there is so much to see and explore in and around Fowey. Fowey is the inspiration of many of the famed author Daphne Du Maurier's books and is home to the annual Du Maurier Fowey Festival of Words and Music each May. The Festival provides an eclectic mix of talks, interviews, music, exhibitions, presentations, theatre, walks, trails and workshops; to enjoy, inform, challenge and inspire the imagination! The extremely popular Fowey Regatta week in August is one of Britain’s premier sailing events; it is also a fun-filled week for all the family, sailors and landlubbers alike. One of the highlights is always an amazing display over the harbour by the Red Arrows who have been making an annual appearance for over 30 years. Other main events include the Carnival with its fascinating parade of people and floats in fancy dress finery, glorious firework displays over the river, live music on the Town Quay and of course racing on the water every day – not only the serious stuff, but raft and gig racing as well as swimming for the brave hearted! In December, Fowey hosts a weekend of festive entertainment, food and drink along with plenty of opportunities to pick up some great Christmas gifts at the Christmas Fair. With so much to see and do, it is quite possible you will find your entire holiday takes place in Fowey!

The England region

Fowey

In the centre of Fowey there is also a sweet little aquarium, and a local museum – both are worth a peek! Fowey has a 14th church and a 15th century castle fort.

There are a variety of activities on the water, ranging from organised boat trips to canoe hire.

The closest permanent is Ready Money Cove, which has clean sands and is perfect for swimming.

There is also a tidal sea-pool hidden away at the Whitehouse Pier! Within a five-ten minute drive, you can be at Polkerris beach and Par Sands, and within a half hour drive there is Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Porthpean, Pentewan and Mevagissey.

There are many thousands of miles of fantastic walks in Cornwall. The South West Coastal Path alone winds 630 miles around the county!
