Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable! The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery. For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…This is Olde Worlde Italy.

Fosciandora

The villa is 1 hr north of Lucca high in the hills of Garfagnana Northern Tuscany. The views & walking opportunities are the real attraction of this property but there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the market town of Castelnuovo, famous for its Thursday morning market (12 min drive) and also in the beautiful mediaeval Barga which is a 20 min drive. There is a small bar/shop in two of the closest villages one of which is less than a km away, and a restaurant a 5 min drive too.Airports-Pisa 80 mins; Florence 1hr 50 mins;Genoa 2 hrs 30 mins; Milan 3 hr 15 mins; Bologna 2 hrs 30 mins.

“Beautiful property, Beautiful location”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2016

We travelled as a group of six and found the property to be perfect; hugely spacious, wonderfully located and the highlight was the locally cooked meal served on the balcony overlooking the mountains as the sun went down! Also ideally located to visit nearby cities, though we found a car crucial for this! An all round great trip, and highly recommended property

Thank you for your review. We are glad you had a good time and found the house to be perfect for your needs. We used to live nearby and know that house to be perfect for watching the sunsets! We hope to hear from you again. Thanks again, Lorraine from tuscan-retreats

“Terrific Tuscany Trip”

Reviewed 3 Jun 2014

Four of us just spent a marvellous week relaxing at this fabulous house. The property is a barn conversion and has been completed to a high specification with excellent furnishings and fittings. It is a very spacious house spread over three storeys with two kitchens (large) and two living areas. The swimming pool is excellent and clean though chilly in May! The house is about a ten minute slow drive from the main road and takes you through some narrow roads and sharp bends. But it is worth the drive! The location is beautiful with views across the valley to distant hills/mountains/villages. A great place to relax with a glass or three of vino rosso and plate of antipasti. The surrounding Tuscan area provides opportunities to visit villages/restaurants/towns with ease. Lucca is the nearest sizeable town and worth a visit. We used the train service from there to visit Florence and the service is cheap (compared to England), comfortable and reliable. 5 out of 5 for the property. Will visit again.
