Location description from owner

The Sicily region

Do you know the land where the lemon trees bloom, the dark leaves the golden-oranges glow A gentle wind from blowing blue sky, the myrtle, the laurel stands still and high, you know it? Thither! There I desire with you, my beloved, draw! (JWvGoethe, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship) Sicily is truly the "land where the lemon trees bloom". An island surrounded by turquoise Mediterranean, its history and culture was determined by the imposing volcano Etna has always been. Its eruptions destroyed entire cities - and made at the same time the soil so fertile that here today grow the finest citrus fruits, but also olives, grapes, figs, almonds ... Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans left their mark that one everywhere, partly hidden in olive groves, explore. Cities like Palermo, Siracusa, Taormina and Catania impress with its monuments from antiquity and baroque, merry markets and manicured shopping streets. Etna and some low mountains with its gorges and peaks for hiking. And anyone wanting to relax on the beach need to go anywhere far. The enormous variety of Sicily and floral kingdoms and traveler something, and every day something different.

Forza d'Agro

Our cottage is located in the center of Forza d'Agro, a 900-strong nest, 15km from Taormina, 420 meters above the shoreline of the Strait of Messina on the Sicilian coast sits high up on a rock spur. The balcony looks down on the village street and Carmela, the helpful owner of the small grocery store can watch her sitting on the sidewalk the vegetables for Minestrone dressing. Occasionally rattles past a Motorino, otherwise play on this "thoroughfare" only the children and the cat in the sun. Over the rooftops of time taking a look offers far down to the coast, where a resort follows the other, and across the Strait of Messina across to the mainland coast of Calabria. <> <> On the doorstep of the houses back directly a walk to go to up to the ruins of a Norman-Saracen castle from the XII. Century, completely in ruins and is only open for certain hours for visitors. Inside the castle walls, the Forzeser have operated until recently their cemetery, which now also expires, which the unsuspecting visitors sometimes brings creepy bone finds ... <> <> The place itself is built onion skin-like to the fort around the innermost shell consists of predominantly derelict simple stone houses and huts. Around it arose some extent now very handsomely renovated houses and small palaces of the Sicilian Baroque. Modern mostly loveless architecture forms the outer shell, the first impression upon entering the village - very briefly but -. Able to tarnish <> <> The village Forza d'Agros is dominated by the church "Santissima Maria Annunziata e Assunta" the <> <> is well attended in spite of their impressive architecture much more frequently of "Padrino" fans, in the three parts they each has a brief appearance. on a side hill, the actual center precedes something is a recently renovated Augustine convent of the XVI. Century. To get there, one must pass through an archway from the Durazzesco. <> <> The real attraction Forza but the phenomenal views of the sea and across to Taormina and Mount Etna, and its relaxed village atmosphere, the far from the sporadic day tourists can not harm. And yet one finds in everything you need to live, two small Alimentari, a pharmacy, even a tiny gas station. And a surprising number of simple to very good restaurants for every taste.
