The Scottish Highlands region
On the most southern tip of Loch Ness Fort Augustus is situated on the Great Glen Way and the Caledonian Canal and is half way between the Capital of the Highand’s Inverness and Fort William. The original name for the village was Cill Chuimein, literally "the Church of Chuimein", after the said Chuimein, then the Abbott of Iona, established a church here in the 6th Century.
In the early 17th century, the village became known by the name of the fort built by General Wade, Fort Augustus, named after the second son of King George. Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, became infamous in the Highlands as "Butcher Cumberland" owing to the many atrocities inflicted on the Highland population by his orders.
Running through the village is the River Oich and the impressive 60 mile long Caledonian Canal and lock system, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800s. The Caledonian Canal stretches from Fort William to Inverness, is linked by a series of natural lochs and has a flight of 5 locks from the top of the canal in Fort Augustus down onto Loch Ness.
The Aonach Mor Apartments sit on the southern tip of Loch Ness, with Inverness and Fort William just a 45 minute drive away. Heading towards Fort William you can take a small detour and enjoy the superb views from the cable car as you reach the top of Aonach Mor, walk up Ben Nevis, and in the winter months try your hand at ski-ing or snowboarding. In Fort William there is also a bowling alley and soft play area for the children to enjoy or you could take a trip on the 'Harry Potter' train to Mallaig.
On the way to enjoy the shops in Inverness you could stop to admire Urquart Castle or search for Nessie at the Loch Ness Visitor Centre. By taking a small detour at Drumnadrochit you will soon find yourself in Glen Affric, said to be one of the most beautiful Glens in Scotland, with it's scenic walks and Loch. Just outside of inverness is Channory Point where you will have a chance to walk along the beach and look for the dolphins who are regular visitors. Beauly is nearby, a lovely wee town with shops and a very interesting Priory.
The drive to the Isle of Skye is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful in Scotland taking you through the Kintail mountain range. On route, Eileen Donan Castle is definitely worth a visit as is the beautiful coastal village Plockton.
