In our VillasBarcelona catalogue since 2002, this exceptional villa offers lots of space, both indoors and out, and lots of bedrooms, each with a private bathroom - all for very little money. With an incredibly beautiful garden (the owner's own a garden center and are experts) situated just 1km (10 min walk) from an agreeable village 8 km south of Girona and 15 km to beaches, this villa is proving to be very popular with those in need of a big house, with a big 12 x 6m swimming pool, a spa area with sauna (€5=2hours) & a large jacuzzi (€5=1h)... and again, plenty of bathrooms. 1.2km to commuter train to Barcelona & near the major mountain to sea bike routes & so very popular with groups of cyclists. Lots of extras. Free PC & internet & Canal+TV.

The house: the front doors open onto a central hallway which distributes traffic throughout the house. On the left as you enter is the computer and reading room, with a PC with wi-fi connection, and a couple of lounge chairs under a reading lamp. This room has a curious indoor window overlooking part of the main living room. Across the hall is the entry to the kitchen and dining area, a not-overly large but well-equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, microwave, four-burner stove with oven and extractor, toaster, mixer, etc, as well as a decorative old bread oven looking like something straight out of old Napoli. Around the corner from the kitchen is the new main dining room, set in a nice wooden conservatory measuring over 40m2 and opening directly onto the front lawn, with one of those elegant long wooden-planked tables seating 20 or more guests.

The large 70m2 main living room is four steps down from this main bottom floor level, so I guess this makes the house not so wheelchair friendly, although you could wheel around and through the garden.. At the top of the stairs to the living room is a bathroom, and at the bottom of the stairs the washroom, with washer and dryer, a medium sized fridge to supplement the one in the kitchen, some storage shelves for your shopping and a bunch of fans for if the weather gets warm. There is also a large old-fashioned sink for hand washing.

The living room has several sitting areas, two sets of sofa and two lazy chairs, a card table, CD /radio /cassette player, satellite TV, a large fireplace, potted plants, and a mish-mash of decorative items.

The bedroom / bathroom distribution, starting with ground floor:

bedroom 1) is on the ground floor, with queen-sized bed (150x190cm) and private bathroom with 160cm-long bathtub. This ground floor bedroom has a sliding glass door exiting onto the back garden and there are no steps and the doors are wide enough for wheelchair user. This room and bathroom is behind a little hallway with a door, so that cuts down on noise from entryway and hallway outside.

The first floor, 7 bedrooms:

bedrooms 2), 3) and 4) have one double bed (150x190cm) and bathroom with shower stall

bedroom 5) has 2 single beds (90x190cm) and a bathroom with shower

bedroom 6) has one double bed (150x190cm) and a bathroom with bathtub

These 5 bedrooms are distributed around a wide and handsome central living room.

Off to one corner there is a hallway leading to the side of the house overlooking the pool with two large bedrooms:

bedroom 7 has a double bed (150x190cm) and bathroom with bathtub

bedroom 8) has a double bed (150x190cm) and bathroom with bathtub

Top floor 2 bedroom suite, with:

bedroom 9 has an L-shaped sofa bed, (150x190cm) which opens like a book

bedroom 10 is a very handsome large room with king sized bed (190x200cm)

there two rooms share a bathroom with a bathtub

The top floor 75m2 suite is quite attractive, with old fashioned tile floor under the sloped rooftop wooden ceiling beams and 8 windows affording lovely views in all directions. The largest window, 1.5 x 1.5 meters, looks out over some of the owners tree nursery, then the manicured lawns of the pitch and putt golf course, and beyond that, the gorgeous Fornells church, and beyond that, the glorious snow-peaked low-Pyrenees, which must be about 40 km away. On a clearer day, I suppose you can see layer upon layer of mountain ranges fading off into the distance. All the windows have mosquito netting and are thick double-glazed, and with an indoor wooden shutter that completely blocks out light and noise for a good night's sleep. There are also a nice collection of indoor potted plants, aspidistras, fichus, and Adams Ribs mostly, which is quite unusual in rental properties, no doubt adding to the homey feel of the place.

Since first staying at this house back in 2002 we have been back many times with family and friends and most of the photos and movies here were taken by me. This is a house that is accumulating nice memories for me, both professionally and privately, and last year, 2014, we got over 20 weeks of bookings. Not bad!

Not fancy but excellent value and highly recommended!

Location description from manager

The Catalonia region

What can one say about the Costa Brava?

Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why?

From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.

There is always plenty to do. My 90-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.

... but of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.

While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.

When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.

To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 23 years living here, I couldn't agree more!

Fornells de la Selva

Casanova is a couple of kilometers outside of Fornells, a sleepy agricultural town with a pharmacy, a tobacconist, two butchers, one of which prepares take delicious take-away dishes like a French traiteur. there is a new terraced restaurant that guests are raving about, and I forgot to mention the Civic Centre, which also has good menus for 7 Euros.... but you get the idea. It is a small town with a beautiful old church...)

The house is set between a small pitch and putt golf course and a few farms, so the wide views of distant mountain ranges around the house are unobstructed. The owners of Casanova own one of Spain´s most important tree and plant nurseries, so they have practically gone overboard in landscaping a beautiful garden of every imaginable sort of flora in different mediums (I´m not an expert but there are rows of pines and birch, flowerbeds of roses and cyclamens and such, a lilly pond, trellises of climbing plants and ivy, bamboo and citrus, etc., as well as a beautifully kept lawn).

There is a large outdoor veranda made of thick tree trunks near the barbecue, and another covered wooden-beamed veranda affixed to the house just outside the living room. This is a house that invites you to spend a lot of time out of doors.

“Wonderful vacation in Catalonia”

Reviewed 21 Apr 2015

We were five families from Sweden with children from 3-12 years of age. We really enjoyed our stay at Casanova de Ferrando. The house had everything we needed, and the garden with the pool was absolutely perfect. The landlady was very friendly and helpful and fixed the small issues we had quickly. We also enjoyed the location with Barcelona, Girona and the beautiful beaches at Costa Brava only a short drive away. We would definitely recommend Casanova de Ferrando to large groups with children.

“It was a fantastic holiday”

Reviewed 23 Jan 2013

The house is a perfect place for families and friends. The garden is very big, so there is space for playing ball games. It`s a bit out of town, so nobody fells disturbed by the noise of screeming children. If you need shade at the pool you have to ask the owner for parasols!!!
