Location description from owner

The Campania region

The Romans called this wonderful region Campania Felix due to its beautiful landscapes, its pleasant, permanently spring-like climate, its fertile soil and the wonderful aromas and colors that filled ones senses and revitalized ones mind. Travelers can still see all those things that the ancient Romans loved today: Campania provides you with the possibility of spending time on nature, artistic and archeological tours, and also of trying the real tastes of its prestigious food and wine traditions.

Art and culture
Campanias history dates far back, to the 9th century B.C. when the city of Partenope was founded. This regions greatest moment in history was during the Roman Empire, when famous, wealthy people from Rome came to this area to visit the thermal spas. There are still traces of those centuries today, in spite of the devastating eruption of Vesuvius that covered all the nearby towns with a thick layer of lava in 79 A.D. A visit to the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where important monuments and Roman temples were discovered after decades of digs, is a must for archeology lovers.
One also has to visit Naples in order to understand the true essence of this region. Naples is a lively, friendly, sunny city, full of artistic and cultural interest with its theaters and museums, its monuments and its palaces, its typical alleys and open-air coffee shops in the squares. Naples is the place that sums up all the regions culture and history, living proof of the populations that ruled this area over the centuries, from the Anjou dynasty to the Bourbons, with the Aragons somewhere in between.
Another wonderful place to visit is the Reggia in Caserta, about 30 kilometers from Naples: this palace was the summer residence of the Bourbons and has 1200 rooms. It was built as a copy of the Palace of Versailles.

Nature and relaxation
Campania has some of the most charming places of Italy within its boundaries: Vesuvius, the imposing volcano that is surrounded by full, flourishing vegetation, the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula, with their wonderful beaches and captivating fishermans villages. There are also the regions islands, treasures of nature and architecture surrounded by crystal clear seawater.
The coastline boasts some famous places, full of charm, such as Positano, the setting of the summer Dolce Vita in the 1960s, Ravello, a place loved by artists and intellectuals such as Greta Garbo and Richard Wagner, Vietri and many others too. The most famous islands are Ischia, which has one of the greatest number of thermal spas in the world and Capri, with its three stacks and timeless charm.
In addition to the sea and these romantic towns, we also suggest you spend some time on nature tours, visiting, for example, the Punta Campanella Nature Reserve, in the Bay of Ieranto and the famous Emerald Grotto.

Food and Drink
Whenever one talks of Neapolitan and Campania food, it is just impossible to not start with pizza, the dish invented around the end of the 19th century by a Neapolitan cook and which then became famous worldwide. Pizza, the real thing of course, is made using two typical Campania products: San Marzano tomatoes and fiordilatte mozzarella cheese. Pizzas can be tried plain or with other ingredients on top. There are other tasty seafood dishes prepared along the coast and on the islands, such as pepata di cozze made with mussels and desserts such as the famous pastiera. And of course we cannot forget the famous, locally-made Limoncello di Sorrento, a delicious lemon-based liqueur.

Forio

On the northern side of the Ischia island you will find Forio, the second major town of Ischia according to population number and importance. It stretches between two promontories, Punta Caruso (at Zaro) and Punta Imperatore, between the considered most beautiful beaches on the island and into the metallic green of the vineyards which cover the slopes of Mount Epomeo, descending into a scene of incomparable beauty and a lot of evocative areas of naturalistic interest. Forio's territory covers 13 square kilometres and is particulary used for wine industry: the 60% about of the island's wine production come from these areas.

Forio has a population of 12.638 inhabitants; it ranges from 0 km above sea level to 700 in the Falanga areas. It is the only town which has preserved its entire historical centre with its tiny streets, churches, sighting towers and monuments - all of which are unaltered from their original construction.

The main sights are: the church of Soccorso dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, the Torrione (big tower), the church of San Francesco da Paola, the church of Arciconfraternita’ of Santa Maria delle Grazie known as Visitapoveri, the Basilica Pontificia S. Maria di Loreto, the church of San Vito, the parish church of S Leonardo Abate and Sta Maria al Monte.

Worth a visit is the exotic garden of La Mortella, created by Lady Walton, widow of Sir William Walton, the famous English composer, where concerts are often held on summer weekends (no additional charge). The gardens have been recently expanded and there are many wonderful view points of Mt. Epomeo and the Mediterranean.

Also of note is the troglodyte house dug into a mass of tufa and the spa gardens Poseidon.

If Ischia town is considered to be the business centre of the island, Forio is probably the cultural one. In the 1950s it was an international meeting place for show business personalities (Luchino Visconti, Pierpaolo Pasolini, Sir William Walton, Eduardo De Filippo, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton), writers (Elsa Morante, Alberto Moravia, Renato Guttuso, Auden, Pablo Neruda), politicians (Pietro Nenni) and the jet-set (Jackelin Kennedy, Aristotele Onassis) and many others.

Near Forio you can find two wonderful beaches, Citara and Cava dell'isola, and also very important thermal sources in Citara and in the bay of Sorgeto, where it's possible to take a warm bath all year round.

“Authentic island experience in a charming, residential home”

Reviewed 26 Aug 2012

We are from America and rented Casa Krimon for three weeks this summer. The house was very comfortable and there was plenty of room for us and our two children ages seven and nine. The house is in a residential area of Forio and away from the summer tourist crowds, yet still convenient to all the beaches, especially if you have a car. For us a car was a must and made life so much easier. A walk to downtown Forio and bus stops takes about 15 minutes, although there is a very nice grocery store about five minutes away by foot. The property is beautiful with many fruit trees and vineyards. Our kids loved picking oranges and lemons and making orange juice and lemonade. We liked that there was a lot of space for them to explore and run around. There is no AC but it was not a problem because it was a little cooler in the evenings and mornings and we had fans for the bedrooms at night. There is a great washing machine but no drier, mosquito coils are helpful in the evenings while sitting outside, sometimes you hear roosters in the morning, and wireless internet is not available. All of this was fine for us and added to the experience. There is a great restaurant about 100 yards up the hill from the house. Above all, Johanna was a wonderful proprietor, speaks perfect English, and was incredibly helpful with anything we needed. We felt safe in the house and would definitely rent it again.
