The England region

Forest Row is a village and relatively large civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex, England. The village is located three miles south-east of East Grinstead.

The village draws its name from its proximity to the Ashdown Forest, a royal hunting park first enclosed in the 13th century. From its origins as a small hamlet, Forest Row has grown, first with the establishment of a turnpike road in the 18th century; and later with the opening of the railway between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells in 1866; the line, which included an intermediate station at Forest Row,

The village draws its name from its proximity to the Ashdown Forest, a royal hunting park first enclosed in the 13th century. From its origins as a small hamlet, Forest Row has grown, first with the establishment of a turnpike road in the 18th century; and later with the opening of the railway between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells in 1866; the line, which included an intermediate station at Forest Row, closed in 1967 as a result of the programme of closures put forward by East Grinstead resident and British Railways Board Chairman Richard Beeching.

The village inn (now known as The Swan, owned by Mountain Range Restaurants, part medieval, was a centre of smuggling in the 18th century.

The Brambletye House (known locally as Brambletye Castle) was built by Sir Henry Compton in 1631. This building features in the 1826 Horace Smith novel Brambletye House.

The centre of the village boasts several restaurants including an Italian Pizza house/cafe, a lovely Portegese restaraunt and a high classes Indian kitchen.

In close proximity is the luxurious Ashdown Park Hotel and country club. An amazing place for an afternoon tea or classic dinner.

The Royal Ashdown Forest Golf club is 0.7 miles, or 15 mins walk.

There is a Co-Op supermarket and a Tesco store 500 yards up the road.

Relaxing walks or riding along the forest walk, which backs the property, The Forest Way is situated in the heart of the beautiful East Sussex countryside. It is approximately 10 miles long and is used for walking, cycling, horse riding and the quiet enjoyment of the countryside. It runs from East Grinstead through Forest Row to Groombridge.

The Forest Way runs along an old railway line and is an important habitat for wildlife as a 'green corridor'. There are seats and picnic benches along the entire route. West of Hartfield, a restored pond has been allowed to naturally regenerate. On a hot summer's day, the area buzzes with life, and visitors will be treated to damsel and dragonflies dancing about the water, glimpses of newts, toads and frogs, and an abundance of bird song.

The Park lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and passes through or close to East Grinstead, Forest Row, Hartfield, Withyham and Groombridge. There are circular trails varying in length and difficulty. Walkers may spot swallows, badger tracks deer and foxes, amongst the fields and woodlands.

Forest Row

East Sussex is part of the historic county of Sussex, which has its roots in the ancient kingdom of the South Saxons, who established themselves there in the 5th century AD, after the departure of the Romans. Archaeological remains are plentiful, especially in the upland areas. The area's position on the coast has also meant that there were many invaders, including the Romans and later the Normans. Earlier industries have included fishing, iron-making, and the wool trade, all of which have declined, or been lost completely.

Nearby you will find wonderful places of interest such as Hever Castle (25 mins away by car), Brighton & Hove (45 mins by car), Royal Tunbridge Wells (30 mins by car) And many many more Sussex attractions for all ages.

“The perfect vacation...”

Reviewed 15 Feb 2014

We came to the annex looking for a quiet vacation and got so much more... A warm cozy hut with brand new appliance (the shower is very luxurious!!), in one sentence- all you need for a quiet vacation. The owners are very nice and warm people- that was part of the great impression we had from this stay :)

“A great place to stay”

Reviewed 20 Dec 2013

The accommodation was a lovely place in a good location and very nice, helpful people. The property was well maintained and very clean. I would definitely stay here again should the occasion arise.

“Clean & spacious”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2013

Very clean & crisp accommodation, local facilities within comfortable walking distance, stores, restaurants & pubs. Personally I stayed on business, but the accommodation is within good travelling distance of local beauty spots. East Grinstead is 3 miles away & has good traditional shopping & pubs serving real ale & excellent food. The accommodation is run by a busy family who were always available for help & advice.
