Description from owner

This centuries old stone farmhouse is set in its own grounds of almost ten acres. It has been renovated by the present English owners to a high standard and has four pretty bedrooms. The ground floor bedroom has an en suite shower room and there are two upstairs bedrooms and two further bathrooms. The large kitchen is equipped with a cooker, fridge- freezer and dishwasher and there is also a large dining room and comfy lounge with TV and DVD player.

There is a pretty lavender-filled garden area for barbequing and a large gravelled courtyard for parking as well as an enclosed front garden. The surrounding fields are home to grazing cattle, sunflowers and cornfields. The local forests are full of wild flowers and birdsong in springtime. There is a pretty swimming lake 5ks drive away with children's play area and it is a great place for a picnic. The lake has a cafe and shower facilities. There is also a swimming complex at St Jean d'Angely.

The nearest town of Aulnay has a typical French market every Sunday where you can stock up on wine, cheeses and seafood. The boulangerie sells the best almond croissants in France! There are many local restaurants and pavement cafes especially in the nearby town of St Jean d'Angely.

A trip to Cognac is a must – drive through acres of vines and visit the famous cognac houses such as Remy Martin, Hennessy, Martell and Otard, offering interesting tours including tastings!

The hilltop town of Angouleme is also worth visiting to experience the covered market, restaurants, cafes and the famous chocolate shops.

The nearest coastal town of Fouras is pretty and there are several stunning islands to explore such as the Ile de Re and the Ile d'Oleron, where you can sample the best oysters. The French like to keep these islands a secret, as they are so beautiful. If you visit the pretty harbour of St Martin de Re you can have lunch watching the boats and then indulge in a local ice cream (try the salted caramel or tiramisu flavours!)

Local attractions include the zoo at La Palmiere, Monkey Valley, Crocodile Planet and Futuroscope in Poitiers.

We can guarantee that a week in Charente-Maritime, France will not be long enough to enjoy all that the area has to offer!

“Lovely large traditional holiday house in peaceful location.”

Reviewed 30 May 2013

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely house which had everything that we required, including a cot etc for our youngest. It was located in a quiet, rural area with a lot of space for the children to play in. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio with a bottle of wine in the evening too! The local area includes a lovely man made lake which was perfect for the kids to swim in. We also visited monkey valley, lots of local towns including Anguleme and St Jean and even made it to la palmier on the coast(fantastic zoo here). There is a small shop close to the house which was great for essentials, and there were supermarkets within a 20 minute drive. There are a variety of local markets which the children enjoyed looking around. Overall we had a great family holiday here with two young children and a baby- a real home from home.
