Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Floure is a small village in the Minervois plain which runs between Carcassonne, Beziers and Narbonne and is bounded by the Montagne Noire to the north and the Corbieres hills to the south. Carcassonne is a 'must-see', Europe's largest fortified medieval city. The old city stands magnificent 150 metres above the river Aude. With its three kilometres of ramparts, thirty-five defensive towers, its moat, Viscount's castle and basilica, it is a dream of the perfect medieval city. There is plenty for children as well as adults to do and see in the old City, and many small restaurants along its narrow streets. The new town of Carcassonne lies along the banks of the Aude and offers good shopping, entertainment and sports facilities. Carcassonne lets its hair down at the beginning of July with a colourful festival - fireworks from the castle walls, many shows of various kind and street theatre and music. The autoroute access is three miles away near Trebes. From there it is a quick, easy drive round the back of Narbonne to a country road which takes you down to the coastal resorts of Narbonne Plage and Gruissan. There are many other seaside places along the coast. One of our favourites is Peyriac de Mer where you see many unusual birds in the bay's shallow waters. In the other direction from Trebes, you can drive to Toulouse, less than 100 kms away. A fine city with wonderful shopping, Toulouse has many historic sites within its borders and lovely parks and walks by the river. This is Cathar country, where a heretical sect established itself eight or nine centuries ago, only to be eradicated by the troops of northern France amongst others in the bloodiest of conflicts. Many castles and fortifications remain from that period, and several villages are constructed in a circular, defensive plan deriving from those years. Towards the top of the Montagne Noire there are many caves which are well worth exploring, notably those at Cabrespine and Limousis. You can drive to the top of the Montagne Noire and then travel east through the National Park. The Corbieres hills are wild and rough country with small villages dotted about, often with their medieval remains visible and accessible. The Canal du Midi lies very close to Floure, at the small village of Marseillette. Walking or cycling along the tow path makes for a relaxing afternoon and safe for children. Boat trips go from Trebes, Carcassonne, Homps and Bram, and these offer a delightful way of spending a half-day with your picnic and hamper of cool white wine. If you are lucky, you may find a company which will let you hire a boat on your own for the day, but these have become rare in recent years, The Canal du Midi is a World Heritage Site and truly beautiful. There is an international watersports centre at Axat, on the Aude further upstream, and mountaineering centres in that area. If you like that sort of thing, come and stay at our house at Lapradelle close by.

Floure

Floure itself is a small village which boasts little, except a magnificent Chateau hotel/restaurant, out of all proportion with its surroundings. It is a fine building with many interesting features, and its gardens are superb. Other than the Chateau, there is a war museum and, we are told, a naturist park. There are no shops in Floure, and you will travel to Trebes, two miles away, for your banks, supermarkets, tourist centre etc. The supermarkets in or near Trebes will meet your every need. Along the canal bank at Trebes are a row of nice restaurants, bars and eateries, before you get to the Tourist Office at the far end. There are regular markets in Trebes and vide greniers in most of the neighbouring villages if you keep an eye out for the signs. There is a bustling market at Lezignan on a Wednesday, and another at Mirepoix on a Monday. The latter is our especial favourite, set in a fine square with its many old buildings. La Florette would make an excellent base for cycling because in all directions there are quiet roads running within the labyrinth of small villages, all of which have their own distinctive features. Off the main roads, traffic is quite light. We like the month of June because of its long evenings and clement weather. If you want more reliable warm sunny weather, turning hot much of the time, then choose July or August. You do get the occasional storms during the summer, but overall the summer climate is quite consistent. The swimming-pool at La Florette is a veritable suntrap. From Floure, there is wonderful walking country in all directions. Many of the best walks are well marked and selected for their variety and scenery.
