The Tuscany region
Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.
There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking.
Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany and the birthplace of Renaissance. It is built around river Arno and known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The historic center of Florence attracts millions of tourists every year and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
The city is served by two large nearby airports, Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei) and Florence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci). The main motorway, A1, connects Florence with Bologna and Milano in the North and Rome and Naples in the South.
Discover the city of Florence walking through the ancient streets, visiting museums and monuments, and staying in an apartment to feel the real Fiorentine life.
Santa Croce -- This eastern edge of the centro storico runs along the Arno. The bulky Santa Croce church is full of famous Florentine art and famous dead Florentines. The church is also the focal point of one of the most genuine neighborhoods left in the old center. While the area's western edge abuts the medieval district around Piazza della Signoria -- Via de' Bentaccordi/Via Torta actually traces the outline of the old Roman amphitheater -- much of the district was rebuilt after World War II in long blocks of creamy yellow plaster buildings with residential shops and homes. Few tourists roam off Piazza Santa Croce, so if you want to feel like a city resident, stay here. This neighborhood also boasts some of the best restaurants in the city.
