Description

This is a beautiful 4 bedroom apartment occupying part of a 15th century villa. Set on top of a hill just outside Florence, it overlooks the Chianti region and is surrounded by 30 hectares of olive groves containing 6000 olive trees. Guests share a swimming pool with one other apartment. Appartamento Camelia can be rented together with Appartamento Azalea to offer accommodation for larger groups of between 12-14 people.

The property is steeped in history. In Renaissance times, the property belonged to the Gherardini family, the family of the famous Mona Lisa, immortalized by Leonardo Da Vinci. For the past 200 years, the property has been in the Calamai family and the current owners, Eleanora and Marco, lovingly look after the property and tend the olive groves.

Marco looks after the olive trees, following strict rules handed down over the generations. The olives are all picked by hand in order to keep each fruit in tact until it is crushed in the oil mill - a process that has to take place the same night that it has been picked. This, combined with the combination of different olive varieties used - the Frantoiano, Moraiolo and Leccino olive trees each have their own characteristics (taste, perfume and colour) - is what ensures this Tuscan oil is so special.

Whilst Marco looks after the groves, Eleanora offers guests the opportunity to share her passion for cooking, offering cookery courses. She can also arrange other excursions such as wine tasting at a local vineyard, a visit to a cheese producer or guided tours of the area. Eleanora will also be happy to cook for guests and, on request, guests have the opportunity to dine by candlelight in the wonderful frescoed salon of the villa.

The property is in an absolutely idyllic setting only 10km from Florence with stunning views of the Tuscan countryside. Guests are welcome to wonder through the olive groves. They are also encouraged to help themselves to the wonderful home grown produce from the estate's fruit and vegetable patch. And for those times when you just want to relax, there is a swimming pool and beautiful gardens to enjoy.

The interior of Appartamento Camelia is beautifully furnished with family heirlooms and antiques. You enter into the kitchen which is well equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, oven, stove, fridge and freezer. There is a large open plan living and dining area with dining table seating 8 and comfortable sofa and chairs. Full length windows reveal spectacular views - guests can enjoy the absolutely breathtaking vista over the pool into the olive groves and Chianti vineyards in the distance. Double doors also lead onto a terrace overlooking the inner garden filled with lemon trees and beautiful roses. There is outdoor furniture for al fresco dining. There are 4 bedrooms in total - 2 double bedrooms with the same spectacular views over the olive groves as well as 2 twin / double rooms towards the rear of the property. There are 2 bathrooms.

The Tuscany region

The classic landscapes of Tuscany have long held an irresistable attraction for holidaymakers. Made famous by the Renaissance artists, the landscape provides a stunning backdrop to your stay. Visitors are spoilt for choice in terms of Tuscany tourist attractions to visit and Tuscany sights to see, whether it's the Duomo and Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the leaning tower in Pisa or the Campo in Siena. Tuscany even offers some great seaside resorts and is also wonderful walking country too.
Undoubtedly the best known and most visited city in Tuscany is Florence. With its stunning architecture and incredible sights, and a host of Florence attractions, from the Duomo to the Uffizi, and from the Palazzo Pitti to the Ponte Vecchio, it's a city full of wonderful art and architecture and beautiful gardens. You must make a point of visiting Siena during your stay too. The cityscape is easily one of the most recognisable Tuscany sights, with it's black and white striped Duomo and huge piazza, home to the famous Siena Palio. The next city on your list of places to visit in Tuscany is Pisa. The main Tuscany tourist attractions in Pisa are, of course, well known. The leaning tower of Pisa is known world wide but is just one of the attractions to be enjoyed in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), the others being the Duomo, Baptistery and Camposanto. Head out a short way from this main tourist area and you'll find a much different city. Near to Pisa is Lucca, smaller in size than the other Tuscan cities, but one of the richest. Surrounded by the old city walls, the city has a much more intimate feel and is a lovely place to spend an afternoon, exploring it's museums, churches or streets. It's well worth a visit. Smaller in scale again is San Gimignano, one of Tuscany's most famous villages. It's stunning skyline of towers captures the very essence of what people think about when they think of Tuscany. It does get extremely busy as it is popular with tourists but it's a must-see destination for any Tuscan holiday. Make a point of visiting the interior of the Collegiata which is stunning, filled with beautiful frescoes. Also worth seeing are Museo Civico and Pinacoteca. And finally build up an appetite by climbing the Torre Grossa, the only one of the towers you're able to go up. You'll be richly rewarded at the top by stunning views of the Val d'Elsa. Finally, furthest south on your tour of Tuscany is the city of Arezzo and town of Cortona. Again, a visit to Tuscany wouldn't be complete without a trip to both places. Of course, the landscape surrounding all these places is stunning. Visitors can gain immense enjoyment simply from driving across it's rural hills and enjoying the Tuscany sights en route. And don't forget as well that the region is bordered by the sea. Taking a trip to the coast is certainly a fun day trip if you want to escape the heat inland during the peak Summer months. And there is plenty to keep the children entertained too, whether it's a waterpark, aquarium or theme park. Finally, for golfers, if playing amid olive groves and vineyard covered hills is your idea of the perfect round of golf, then Tuscany is certainly an ideal destination! Please ask for more information on what to see and do in the area.
