Description from owner

Description

Porta Romana marks the southernmost border of the historic center of Florence and also of its lively district of “Oltrarno”. Once, the city of Florence was completely surrounded by defensive walls, and the most important entrance was through the majestic stone archways of Porta Romana, from which departed the Roman “Via Cassia”, the road that led to Siena and Rome.

The district of “Oltrarno” (literally “beyond the Arno”) is the part of the historic center of Florence that lays south of the Arno river. Among the inhabitants of Florence it is considered, and often referred to, as the “true Florence”, due to the fact that this district was left untouched by the controversial heavy demolition and reconstruction works. This profoundly reshaped the historic center, not without later criticism. Also, while the rest of the Old Town changed dramatically its social, business and craftsmanship composition (especially after the end of World War II) this almost didn't happen in the district

Also, while the rest of the Old Town changed dramatically its social, business and craftsmanship composition (especially after the end of World War II) this almost didn't happen in the district of Oltrarno. Therefore, a walk through those narrow streets and alleys between Porta Romana, Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito and the Old Bridge, will give the visitor an unconventional and more genuine perception of the true historic identity of Florence.

Today's Porta Romana is a pleasant low-density part of the city, with lots of green space and many typical small shops, at the southern border of the Historic City Centre. Our apartment is located in a secondary street a few steps away from Piazzale di Porta Romana. Within walking distance you can find the entrance to Boboli Gardens, and a bit farther on, Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito, the Ponte Vecchio and the rest of the Old Town.

Nearby are two parks, the Boboli Gardens and the former Royal Stables - now an art school. From Porta Romana begins what is probably the most stunning walk of Florence, following the path that goes up through the wide and shady bends of the tree-lined Viale Machiavelli and Viale Galileo to reach the church of San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo.

A supermarket can be found in Via Romana, about 300 meters away. In addition to that, each day at Porta Romana a street market is held where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. At the beginning of Via Senese you can find an excellent butcher shop, a fish shop, a wine shop, an excellent pastry shop and a hairdresser.

As for the public means of transport, at Porta Romana you can find a taxi park, a bus stop that serves local transport and also regional public transport to reach various locations in the Chianti region and also Siena. Other local bus stops are located in Viale del Poggio Imperiale and Piazza della Calza.

The apartment is about 70 square meters, so divided:

1. Entrance

2. Double bedroom

3. Living room (can be used as a second double bedroom)

4. Wardrobe / Storage room

5. Bathroom

6. Kitchen with dining area + balcony overlooking the Bellosguardo hill.

The apartment is very bright, and is located on the 3rd floor (with no elevator). We have internet available (wifi - broadband access (20 Megabit) and DTTV.

Regarding the laundry facilities, in our apartment you will find a washing machine, a drying rack, an ironing board and an electric iron. For more complex tasks, there are two professional dry-cleaners in the range of 200 meters from the condo (one in Via Senese and one in Piazzale di Porta Romana).

Our kitchen is fully appointed, with all the necessary glassware, cutlery and flatware, gas stove, electric oven, fridge with freezer, microwave oven, coffeemaker and dishwasher.

If a parking place is needed, we have an agreement with a garage that is 30 meters away from our building. The price for the parking is as follows:

1-3 days: 15 euro / day

4-7 days: 60 euro

4 weeks: 200-220 euro depending on the size of the car.

The parking rate must be paid in cash to the owner of the parking, and the parking place must be booked in advance.
