Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

We are on the doorstep of the Regional National Park of the Perigord. The area is rich with Renaissance architecture, with the medieval chateaux of Hautefort and Jumilhac-le-Grande within easy reach. The spectacular caves at Lascaux are a little further away, but are well worth a visit. For a day trip, Sarlat and Rocamadour are highly recommended.

The region is renowned for its porcelain, with the world famous Limoges pottery available from many shops in the nearby towns.

Excideuil

Excideuil is in the northern part of the Dordogne department, about 30 kilometres south of Jumilhac and 15 kilometres from Hautefort.

The town originally developed around a 10th century monastery, in a peaceful setting in the valley of the River Loue. There are a couple of reasons to visit Excideuil, apart from the interesting old-town itself with its gothic church and 16th century houses.

The first is the Thursday market, when the village leaps to life with reputedly the busiest market in the region, the second is the castle. High on a rocky promontory, the castle successfully repelled Richard the Lionheart on three different occasions (note that the main castle is not open to the public).

Set in the rolling green countryside, the Perigord-Limousin Natural Park is nearby. Also try and visit Tourtoirac, a village to the south of Excideuil with the remains of an attractive 11th century abbey.

For the outdoor lovers, the Base de Loisirs, close to Lanouaille a 100 hectare wooded park on the edge of Lac Rouffiac offers many outdoor activities including sailing, water-skiing, canoeing, climbing, archery to name but a few.

If walking or hiking is your passion, we provide maps covering 36 walks in the region ranging from 3 to 17 kilometres.

“Rest & Relaxation to the Extreme...”

Reviewed 23 Jun 2013

From first contact both Christine & Steve ensured we had everything organised to make our trip hassle free, explanatory documentation, Tunnel times & even directions "door to door"! When we reached the Gite is was instantly adorable, the views were exquisite and we had everything we required for our stay to hand. The welcome pack was well deserved. A lot of care and thought from the owners had been placed into travellers enjoying their stay here. Don't miss the markets. They were unbelievable! The History around the region is impressive and being a camera enthusiast visiting the surrounding chateaux's is a must. Shops are within easy reach and the pool was a lot of fun! We have already booked the Gite again for September, my partner wants to improve her mushroom picking skills!

“Well Equipped, Relaxing, Home from Home”

Reviewed 29 May 2013

This a truly well equipped, relaxing, home from home gite. In the 14 years we have been vacationing in France, this is the most well equipped gite we have stayed in. The standard of the fixtures and fittings is very high. Comfortable sofas, good quality dining furniture with plenty of seating and a comfortable bed make for a perfect stay. There is plenty of crockery, cutlery and cooking tools with even baking tins to use. The stereo was also amazing quality for a rental property. The area is very quiet, and if you like to walk there are plenty of maps for signposted walks available within easy driving distance. The fishing is perfect for a pleasure angler with the pool house doubling as a fishing HQ, the lake has a good head of 3 to 4 pound Common/Mirror Carp and Bream plus a lot of small roach, take plenty of sweet corn! The best recommendation we can probably give is that we have already booked for next year, enjoy!

“A perfect place for two”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2012

We were already very familiar with this area of France, which we love, returning here for over 12 years, and were pleased to find such an ideal rental for this year's holiday. The house is located at the end of a country lane of a small hamlet and surrounded by apple and walnut orchards. It's quiet and detached but not isolated and the huge garden overlooks a small lake. The pool is delightful and the sunlounger area is very private, being completely screened off. The gite is very well equipped and has everything you could want. It doesn' t thave a wi-fi connection but that was an advantage for us as we needed a relaxing break from the modern world! The nearest boulangerie for bread and basic groceries is in nearby Sarrazac. Excidueil has an excellent supermarket and a range of small shops There's lots of wildlife to watch for including little lizards, red squirrels, herons, woodpeckers, buzzards etc. A wonderful holiday. If we were in a position to buy our own house in France, this would fit the bill perfectly!
