La Petite Gare (a former railway guard's cottage) is set in a beautiful location, nestled on the edge of a small hamlet and surrounded by woods and farmland. The gardens are pretty and alive with bees and butterflies during the summer months, making it a perfect destination for keen photographers. You will be spoilt for choice of where to sit to make to most of these beautiful surroundings: Enjoy the cool shade of the trees, recline in the sun on the terrace or by the private, 4m above-ground pool or enjoy the warmth of the early morning sun on a little stone bench whist nattering over a cup of coffee and a croissant.Inside La Petite Gare you will find a sympathetially restored, rustic French home. A serene, comfortable master bedroom, a charming children's bunk room and a shower room can be found upstairs. Downstairs there is a very well-equipped, open-plan kitchen/diner and lounge. The kitchen leads out onto the raised terrace, which provides wonderful views of the gardens

It provides the peace and tranquility to help you forget about and unwind from your busy lives at home whilst also being well located in the Dordogne for a wide variety of activities. Just 10 minutes drive away is the charming market town of Excideuil which offers several lovely restaurants, a selection of shops, a supermarket and a market on Thursdays. The 40ha Lake Rouffiac is also nearby, offering a sandy beach and a selection of water sports. A velo-rail starts in the nearby village of Corgnac-sur-l'isle and passes right outside La Petite Gare. Other nearby activities include cycling, quad biking, horse riding and walking. The Dordogne is a region of chateaux, Medieval and Renaissance architecture and Romanesque churches. A wealth of prehistoric sites can also be found in the region, such as the painted cave of Lascaux, near Montignac.

The Dordogne region

Excideuil

For a baker's and small shop, the pretty village of Saint Germain des Pres is approximately 20 minutes walk along the disused railway track that runs alongside the house (or five minutes drive). The nearest town is Excideuil (about 10 minutes drive away) where you will find cafes/restaurants, shops, a Thursday market, the tourist information office, a chateau and an indoor swimming pool. For some larger towns: Thiviers is 15 mins; Perigueux 30 mins; Brantome 45 mins, Brive (63km) and Sarlat (142km). Brantome is a particular favourite of ours: Brantôme is situated on the river Dronne, which encircles a large part of the town, turning it into an island connected to rest of the world by five bridges. Its elegant and attractive architecture is set against a backdrop of steep wooded slopes. You can appreciate the exceptional beauty of the town from the river in a hired canoe or a pedal-powered boat or simply stroll along the riverbank. Brantôme is packed with history and culture: from the imposing Benedictine Abbey and the walled Italianate gardens to the summer painting exhibitions in the abbey and the festival International de Danse Classique (ballet). There are also plenty of good riverside cafes, bars and restaurants; a weekly market held on Fridays plus art galleries, arts, crafts and antiques shops. In addition to these larger towns, there are many pretty and popular villages to visit nearby, such as the lovely St Jean De Cole.
