Description

Beautiful and typical rural property in Evoramonte, with special views to the castle and surroundings especially on sunset.

Our aim is to provide comfort and tranquility for family vacation, to friends who feel that country side is a step near to our own nature.

Perched romantically on a barren hill in the Serra de Ossa, high above the surrounding plains, the massive round towers of the Castelo de Evoramonte are visible for tens of kilometers. The castle has been an eyrie watching out for attack and invasion since the time of reconquest. The views from the battlements are breathtaking, and wandering around the tiny village that spreads around the castle´s feet, within the secondary walls, is a delight. A fortress was built here shortly after Gerard the Fearless – the liberator of Evora, expelled the moors from the hill in the 12th century, but it was Dinis who commissioned the construction of the first castle proper in 1306, after building his palace in nearby Estremoz. The building was further fortified by Dom Manuel I, who employed one of the great architects of the Manueline era, diogo de Arrudo – brother of Francis and the architect of Tomar´s Temple Caste and Viana do Alentejo´s magnificent Igreja Matriz. De Arruda gave the castle its cylindrical towers, and within the keep you can see his trademark lavish decoration an embellished piers.

Evora is a charming city that is situated in the heart of Alentejo region. Historically, Evora was a significant centre for both trade and religion, which resonates through the sheer variety of tourist sites. Most of which are all conveniently contained within the city’s ancient walls.

Estremoz, along with the nearby towns of Borba and Vila Viçosa, is the center of the marble quarrying area of the Alentejo Plain. Estremoz is made up of upper and lower towns. The newer, Lower Town is surrounded by a 17th century wall and is centered on the huge Rossio Marquês de Pombal square, simply referred to as "Rossio" by the locals. The large Saturday market takes places around the square selling local pottery, goats cheese, pickled plums.
