The house is set on the edge of the small rural community of Estorninhos. The locals grow olives, carob, some vines and fruit trees. There are bee hives further down the valley and you'll also see ducks, hens, dogs and sheep roaming around.

Location description from owner

The Algarve region

The Algarve is deservedly a well known holiday destination for the Portuguese and many other Europeans. It has beautiful beaches all along its coast - long white sandy beaches backed by dunes and lagoons in the eastern Algarve and smaller cliff-backed beaches in the western Algarve.
The Eastern Algarve is generally less touristy than the western side. It's easy to travel around and from the eastern part you can easily visit all parts of the Algarve as well as parts of Andalucia , Spain.
If you want peace and quiet it is easy to find in the eastern Algarve - even in August if you are willing to walk for 5 or 10 minutes along the beach away from the parts closest to the towns you will find a quiet spot. There are different beaches to choose from and different ways to get there - drive to Manta Rota, take a boat across the lagoon from Fabrica, or take a boat to the Isla de Tavira. A little further afield take a little train to the beach at Pedras d'el Rei or spend a day at one of the islands off Olhao and Faro.
If you fancy some time away from the beach there is plenty to do and see. There are the picturesque towns of Tavira and Alcoutim to explore and the castle at Castro Marim. The city of Faro is also well worth visiting and has some very attractive old parts. Or go across to Spain - Ayamonte is well worth visiting and very nearby, and Seville is less than two hours away. You can also drive to the other end of the Algarve easily for a day trip. If you fancy more activity there are plenty of golf courses nearby , including the famous Jack Niklaus 'signature' course Monte Rei, and also waterparks and a marine zoo less than an hour away.

East Algarve

Tavira is by far the most attractive town in the Algarve. Set on both sides of the river Gilao it has bridges, remnants of an old castle and plenty of churches. There are some lovely old houses with the characteristic Tavira rooves and door knockers shaped like hands. There's a great food market where you can buy fresh fish, locally produced honey, figs, nuts and salt as well as mounds of delicious fruit and vegetables. It's a good idea to take a mini- train tour around the town to give you a feel for the place and then spend some time wandering around the cobbled streets at your leisure. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, all with outside seating to enjoy the warm summer days and evenings.
Tavira is also well served by supermarkets - and there's a large shopping centre on the outskirts of the town with a huge supermarket, and all sorts of other shops and cinemas!

Estorninhos is about 10 km drive from Tavira. It's a tiny village up in the hills well away from the summer bustle. The locals are mainly small scale farmers - the younger generation has tended to move away to find work elsewhere. The village has a shop where you can buy a few necessities and the village is also visited regularly by a bread van, a fish van and a frozen food van! The locals enjoy hunting in the autumn and spring - you'll see rabbits and pheasants running around. The village is an ideal starting point for long walks in the hills, bird watching and there are also golf courses within easy reach. The temptation in the summer however may simply be to relax by the pool and enjoy the views.
