Description

Another magnificent villa from Villasbarcelona, Mas Grau was one of the First houses to join us back in 1997!

Set in lush farmlands only 8 km SE of Girona's provincial capital - a fascinating historical city - this venerable fortified farmhouse occupies an privileged hillside position surrounded by fruit trees and woods, offering marvelous views of the Medieval village below (Estanyol), and the Mediterranean coastal plain stretching to the sea.

Mas Grau was built in the 12th century and was the fortress of the Viscount of Cabrera. This entire area is renowned for its pristine medieval villages, the beauty of its countryside, and the area's gastronomy - whether you eat out at a restaurant or buy local produce from nearby markets - is now rated top-notch, with four 3-star Michelin restaurants within a short drive from the house. This magnificent fortified stone mansion, once aptly described by an 8 year old friend of my daughter's as a "museum house", is set in an spot overlooking

This magnificent fortified stone mansion, once aptly described by an 8 year old friend of my daughter's as a "museum house", is set in an spot overlooking the hamlet of Estanyol, near Girona on the Costa Brava, a safe (25 km) distance inland from the (often crowded) coast. Set on a huge private estate of over 110 hectares, with great views out over the coastal plain, the house measures well over 800 m2, with 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, a private fenced-in 10x5 meter pool, with 3 permanent parasols and 14 lounge chairs, outdoor BBQ dining area seating for 20+ under old vines in the old patio, and now a new spa has put in, with large Jacuzzi, Turkish steam bath & sauna. Wifi reaches the entire property and every bedroom has a TV connected to satellite feed. Free WIFI Internet connection.

The rooms are spacious and set far apart from one another, with plenty of common rooms on each floor, 4 rooms with access to a terrace, and outside there are different outdoor sitting areas, BBQ and poolside lounge chairs. All windows have mosquito screens. .All rooms have closet and cupboard space for your clothes, and lighting for reading, at double beds, on both sides of the bed.

Here is the detailed bedroom/bathroom layout:

Ground floor:

bedroom 1) down hallway from dining room with double bed (150x190cm) with private bathroom next door

bedroom 2) near spa and bbq area with 3 single beds (90x190cm) in a large room under vaulted stone ceiling & bathroom with shower across the hall

First floor:

bedroom 3) double bed (150x190cm) en suite with private bathroom with bathtub

bedroom 4) with double bed (150x190cm) and across hall from large bathroom

bedroom 5) huge room, 45m2, with double bed (150x190cm) and a lovely private terrace. There is a single bed (80x180cm) can be installed in the separate alcove preceding this room

bedroom 6) with 3 single beds (90x190cm) with direct access from central hallway and to terrace outside

bedroom 7) across the terrace with two 135x190cm beds and an extra single bed and private full bathroom.

Attic:

bedroom 8) is reached from staircase in bedroom 6) and is a large and very attractive space under wooden beams and hand painted tilework, with 2 single beds, best used, if at all, by children

Note: some additional beds can be placed where needed and there are 3 cots and 3 high chairs for babies.

The downstairs:

Access to the house is through the lovely stone patio under a huge ancient vine and some canopies to increase the shade in the summer months. There is a bbq around the corner, and one of the two accesses to the old barn (to the left of the house when looking at the façade). On the other side of the patio is the physical plant with heater and water filtration & purifying system, which also houses the washing machine, a clothes dryer, and an extra refrigerator (to catch the overflow from the fridge in the kitchen).

A large wooden planked and metal studded door opens onto an impressive stone central room under the wide atrium which distributes the traffic to the ground floor rooms:

- To your right the dining room, two different spaces, 40m2, seating up to 20 or so at 2 old farmhouse wood tables, with a hallway leading down two steps to bedroom 1 and the bathroom there with shower

- The second right puts you into the kitchen, with a central food prep table and all the mod-cons, including fridge, 2 gas burners, 2 electric burners, gas oven, extractor, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, expresso machine, juicer, toaster, etc… The kitchen also opens directly onto the dining room, of course!

- Straight ahead puts you into the stone vaulted atmospheric living room, with pool table, table football, widescreen TV, fireplace, 4 sofas and lounge chairs, a nice playroom of about 50m2

- In the middle of the central stone room is another sitting area under the fancy glass and wrought iron 1st floor atrium’s balcony above

- To your left is the anti-room to bedroom 2) and a bathroom with shower, and access to the bbq patio and the stairway into the spa, which is built into the lovely barn to the left of Mas Grau façade.
