The Balearic Islands region
Menorca is a quiet family island, that prides itself on self-catering holidays. The coastline is filled with small coves, called 'Callas', with excellent and safe bathing. There are larger beaches at Son Bou and Arenal, and at other locations. If interested in history you can explore the pre-historic Taulas and archealogical sites. It was formerly a British Colony in the nineteenth century, and there are several forts from that period to visit, as well as from other periods in history.
Excellent restaurants can be found, catering for all tastes. Mahon harbour is one of the largest and most scenic in Europe, bordered by restaurants ,bars and cafes. The old capital at Cuitadella can also be explored through its pedestrian alleyways and squares.During July and August the main towns hold Fiestas during which the local community celebrates their patron saint's feastdays . Horses are ridden at the Jaleos, and funfare rides and dancing attract locals and visitors alike.
This typical Spanish fishing village is reached by a road that ends there, and is not a through road to other locations. It is surrounded by a biosphere /nature reserve, so further building development is prohibited, thereby preserving the quality and atmosphere of the village. A short walk can be made to S'Albufera lake, which is a freshwater stopover for migratory birds .There are several walks along the coast, along the newly opened Cami de Cavalls, the old horse route around the island.
The village has a beach with excellent bathing, and several bars and a restaurant.
